Ex-Cav Crockett Could Be on Fast Track to Cleveland

Former Virginia pitcher Kyle Crockett only has one scoreless inning on his professional pitching resume. But the executive editor of Baseball America wouldn't be surprised if Crockett's stay in the Cleveland Indians' minor league system is a short one.

"If they keep him in the bullpen, he could fly through the minors," Jim Callis said via email this week. "Cleveland isn't afraid to aggressively push relievers, and Crockett is a lefty with two solid pitches he can put anywhere he wants."

"Maybe he makes the big leagues by the end of 2014 or early in 2015."

The Indians used their fourth round pick in last month's major league draft on Crockett, who signed following his junior year at UVa. Crockett made his pro debut last Sunday for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, hitting one batter and notching one strikeout in a hitless inning out of the bullpen.

Crockett was a relief pitcher for most of his college career, starting just three games in his three seasons at UVa. He spent 2013 as the Cavaliers' closer, going 4-1 with a 1.70 ERA and 12 saves in 29 relief appearances.

Callis concedes that Crockett's future is also probably in the bullpen. But he thinks the left-hander could be a big league success as a starter.

"His ceiling could be as a No. 4 or 5 starter. He'd probably lose a little velocity off of his velocity, making it fringy, but he has a solid slider and plus command," Callis wrote. "More likely, he'd be a seventh-inning reliever. I think he's more than a specialist."

Crockett threw 58.1 innings for UVa this season, striking out 71 while walking just seven. Callis says those stats explain what makes Crockett a viable big league prospect.

"I think the first thing that jumps out is his control and command," Callis said. "As I mentioned before, he's lefthanded and has two solid pitches. Add that to the ability to locate them, and it's a nice package."

Frazier with two more hits tonight, including a triple. He's pretty fucking good..... I don't expect him to be in AZ much longer.

Kieran Lovegrove with 5 shutout innings tonight after being touched up last outing. He has the potential to be a big-time prospect, as does Mitch Brown, who turned in his best outing as a member of the Cleveland Indians organization last night with 1 ER in 4 1/3 innings, striking out 6. Heard he hasn't been thrilled with some of the suggestions the Indians have made regarding his mechanics....hopefully those issues are a thing of the past.

Joey Wendle needs to start getting some run. He might be the biggest sleeper prospect that nobody is talking about in the entire MLB. He could be a nice card for the Indians to deal at the deadline. He's a little old for High-A but as a senior sign from Division II West Chester University in last years draft; he's far exceeded expectations by a lot. In the future, realistically, he's probably a really good utility infielder in the bigs, a la Mike Aviles (similar background too), with the potential for more since this is has been his first crack at high level baseball. Triple stash line of .318/.394/.574 this year after batting .327 last year at short-season Mahoning Valley. He'd be moved up to Akron after the all-star break if not for the log-jam of middle infielders up there already.

Logan Vick has also been on fire lately in Lake County; 10-for-17 over his last four games. He gets on base a lot and plays the game HARD. He has a chance to make it to the bigs as a 4th outfielder type. He'll move up to Carolina once Naquin is bumped up.

Not quite convinced of Mitch Brown's potential:

He has more potential than Dillon Howard right now...

Drafting high school pitchers is such a cluster****. I can't remember where I saw it, but success rates for drafted and signed high school righties was in the single digits. All the teenagers from last year's draft are playing like teenagers right now, none have really jumped out yet (Adams, McClure, Brown, etc)... maybe Baker? Or he did he already turn 20?

As for Wendle, only thing that I see wrong is his lefty/righty splits- can't hit lefties at all yet. Making a name for himself, though, a little like how Kipnis did. If he can stay defensively in the middle of the diamond he could be an asset. Become the prospect I thought Cord Phelps would be. Jose Ramirez is all that is holding him back right now, no open spots in that Akron infield.

Ginger Warrior with a two RBI triple, and a double.

The strikeouts are concerning, but Ginge is absolutely too good for that league.

C.C Lee will represent the Indians in the futures game along with Lindor.

Maybe Imtakin it with a grain of salt, but there's an ungodly amount of K's each game. Figured it was just the nature or rooks to K while being aggressive.

This is where the organizational philosophy of patience at the plate and seeing a ton of pitches is showing. Teaching kids not to swing at everything has to be tough.

Went to the Clippers game tonight. Was a great one. Dice-K was on point minus one mistake that led to a solo HR.

Lindor making a jump up, per his agent:

If they end up getting rid of Asdrubal before the start of next year, I could see Lindor starting with the big club next April.

Or maybe thats just wishful thinking.

Wishful thinking, IMO. Still very raw & young.

Lastoria speculating:

With Lindor being promoted it would have to mean one of Rodriguez/Ramirez are promoted to Columbus or are traded.
