2014 Free Agency Period: News and Discussion

Re: 2014 Free Agency Period: News and Discussion (Marion watch)

Unless Billups finds a time machine he isn't playing over Delly.

in 2k Billups will be like 75ovr :)

I think Delly and Billups can be a good platoon at backup PG

Man, we should be so much better than Miami ever was. Especially once we use Haywood's contract and Miami/Memphis' picks.

Re: 2014 Free Agency Period: News and Discussion (Marion watch)

At the most, Billups would be sort of a player coach in the mold of Jason Giambi for the Indians last year.

Might hit some big shots here and there but mostly an assistant coach as opposed to a player.

No thanks to Billups. They guy has been done for 2-3 years now. I understand the mentor role, but we already have Lebron, Miller, and Jones for that. Can't afford to waste another roster spot on a guy that can't contribute IMO.

Fair point.

I think the Billups news is either a sign that the odds of Allen coming here have gone down by quite a bit or we are trying to put a little pressure on Allen by saying "Hey Ray, if you want that old mentor backup SG roster spot we offered you, you might want to tell us soon"

As for Billups it depends on how we fill out the roster.

Hope you are right. I am assuming we will have Powell, Haywood, and Harris on the team. That's already 3 guys that will likely offer nothing this upcoming season. I could argue James Jones won't do anything either. That's at least 3-4 guys already that offer very little to nothing. I don't think we can afford to add another in Billups.

Powell and Harris are gonna be in Canton all year. I'm fairly sure of it.

FWIW, Powell hasn't been signed yet.

I think he makes the team just due to his size but I wouldn't say his roster spot is a lock right now.

Sort of an odd situation given a Powell contract could make another trade for a C a little easier.

Harris will be on the team I think. Although it wouldn't completely shock me if he was dealt. But I think the plan is to have him learn from Miller and contribute more next year. But if he can hit an open shot, he probably gets on the floor when injuries happen. Four year college player also makes him more NBA ready. Keep in mind Norris Cole played in 65 games his rookie year averaging almost 20 minutes.

Haywood is still a mystery. If healthy, I think he sees minutes. But there has literally been nothing on him. As of now, you can't assume you get much of anything. Someone needs to figure out his status...

I think James Jones actually plays a decent amount. LeBron really wanted him to play more in Miami. Griff seems to like him quite a bit. So it wouldn't shock me if he had a fairly consistent role. Not every game but certainly a pattern to when he plays.

Probably the most recent thing out there about Haywood's status. From February this year:

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2014/02/07/4672364/charlotte-bobcats-jeff-taylor.html

Haywood hopes to start playing sometime in the next few weeks, but a fracture isn’t something you can rush.

“It’s not like an (anterior cruciate ligament), where you can double up the work and get back quicker,” Haywood said. “You really can’t do anything for it.”

So he has been slowly cleared to increase his activity. Currently, he can jog, shoot, do some light jumping and start weight training with his legs. Every so often his foot doctor takes another CT scan to gauge the healing.

At 7 feet tall, he’s a legitimate rim protector and one of the more savvy players on this team. Can he have a role once he returns to the active roster about two-thirds of the way into the season?

Coach Steve Clifford and Haywood both think so because of the center’s experience.

“For me, it’s not going to be a learning process,” Haywood said. “The young guy is trying to get into shape and learn where to be. For me it’s just getting into game shape where I can go 10 to 15 minutes a game to give Al (Jefferson) a blow.”

Hopefully. As good and as efficient as that Miami team was, it had some serious flaws. Bad rebounding, bad post defense, very little youth, suspect bench.

Fortunately for them, they managed to nab some nice FA acquisitions through the years. Without guys like Battier, Allen, and Birdman they wouldn't have won two titles

So... Apparently the NBA granted the Cavs double the roster spots of any other team, right....

What if Haywood decides to retire before the season starts?

Well, there are two million reasons for him to not retire this season. He can just sit on his ass and collect that. Can't see anyone passing that up.

Never understood why these athletes and announcers say "give him a blow" instead of "rest" or "breather".
