2015 Draft Prospects

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I've done a few of those guys *Bell and Coates* so I'll put those evals up here with the rest.

Castleman: Interesting player. Literally not an ounce of quit in his game. He does a decent job of stack and shed, and really really gets the most out of his athletic talent. Absolutely not a pass rusher. Isn't athletic and can be taken out pretty easy. A guy who could stick around the league on practice squads, but I'm not sure he'll ever be anything else.

Blake Bell, TE, Oklahoma (EW%): Can be an effective blocker. Really has a huge frame that can stand to add more weight and lean. He is a former QB, so learning a new position all of a sudden he hasn't had time to get his body right. His hands are pretty good, could be a really effective redzone guy. Not the type of gamebreaker we need at TE, more of a Dray type TE.

Chris Bonner: Huge QB. Decent arm strength at times, but really lacks that superior zip you need on throws. Constantly missing high because of bad footwork. Goes with his first read no matter what. Interesting because he's so big and if you fix him he could become a real interesting guy.

Zach Zenner: Tremendous runner. Decisive, takes a cut and goes. Fast too. Impressive speed for a guy of his thickness. I think he's a running back. Hell of a short yardage guy, reminds me of a bigger version of Crowell.

Chris Conley: Guy has the big play down. Good speed off the line, although he slows down during contact. Not a great route runner, needs to improve. I love his hands. So strong, and he catches everything. He has the potential to become a great WR, just needs work. Not sure it'll ever come together, but he has a shot.

Sammie Coates, WR, Auburn (PRO): Having watched a lot of Coates, the guy can be at times one of the most impressive players on the field. Unfortunately, his hands are really, really inconsistent, his routes aren't consistent, and I'm not sure if I see it in the cards for him to be anything more than just a deep threat. His size, speed and power are all really impressive, and he can make the spectacular look easy, but he needs work. Not a bad choice for the late 2nd, or early 3rd, but I think he's a guy you are always going to wonder how good he could be.

Thanks man, i appreciate you going through them. Very interesting.

You and I are both pretty high on Agholor, but even I'm not sure his value is best with the 19th pick.

With the way the draft and the draft talk is going. Agholor is not going to be there at 43. So the question I have is: Do you take Agholor higher than you want, or do you take a chance on a guy like maybe Coates or maybe a guy falling like DGB, Perriman, or Strong?

For me personally from what I've seen from all these WR'ers, I think Agholor at 19 is a better solution because I believe Agholor is a day one impact player. He plays all over the offense and PR team, and gives you a dynamic threat all over the field, something the Browns to my recollection haven't had since 99. The closest I can think of is Cribbs, and Agholor is a much better player than Cribbs. Agholor's impact would be similar to what I've heard/seen/read about Metcalf being.

I think someone will be there at 43 who you could plug in at WR. I think that is the safest route.

Well, it depends on how you or I suppose in this case, Ray Farmer feels about the WR as compared to Agholor. For me personally, I think the gap is large enough between those WR'ers and Agholor that I'd take Agholor.

One name that fascinates me from that Phills14 article is Henry Anderson from Stanford. Among the defensive linemen who can play end in the 3-4, there are a bunch of top 20 picks, then a monstrous gap until Anderson, expected to be drafted in the 3-5th round. Of course, if Phil Taylor plays nose tackle, the Browns could stand a 5 tech player.

Anderson is 6'6 290 and has a relentless motor. One of his knocks is that his tfl and sacks are usually after another player breaks the play down. I'd happily take a guy with a frame you can't teach and a motor you can't teach. Add to that he was an academic stalwart who should be receptive to coaching and I think you have an interesting target for the 4th round.

So, having watched a lot of guys who I believe are going to be at 12 and 19, I've come to the conclusion of who we should draft:

12: Danny Shelton: If anyone has read anything that I've posted for the last few weeks, you know I am in love with Shelton. As I've said time and again, he's Vince Wilfork mk II. 3 down player at NT, never leaves the field *although he could use more breaks his first year or two*, and is a threat in all situations. He is already an elite run stopper and immediately transforms the whole defensive front.

19: Nelson Agholor: I may not particularly like not getting a first round pass rusher, but at this point I'm pure BPA. And that's Nelson Agholor by a good margin. For my money, he's a better WR than Parker and pushes Cooper. He's not quite the prospect that Kevin White is, but Agholor is GOOD. Plug him into the starting lineup day one and he'll run fantastic routes and be wide open. And he's an fantastic Punt and Kick returner. IMO, he's the best WR for a WCO in the draft.

I'm on board with Shelton at 12. At this point I think I want Parker with the 12th pick but if we took Shelton over him I wouldn't bitch either. Shelton, as you said, transforms this defense. That being said, I'm curious to see what their thoughts are on NTs currently on the roster. Is Taylor in their plans or is he going to be allowed to walk after this year? Do they think Randy Starks can be an effective starter this year and kick this can down the field 1 more year? They gave a reasonable extension to John Hughes who was injured a lot last year. Is he the guy who can anchor the defense? Or does Shelton's ability override all those assets?

As far as Agholor, I see the attraction but 19 is too high. You are right, he won't be there at 43 but if you love him, you can certainly trade down a few slots and pick up a 3rd-4th for the effort. That wouldn't be awful but I'm not sold on the Agholor fit. He's a quality, pro ready WR. His ceiling isn't super high but he has a very high floor and easily projects as a #2 receiver for his career. He's not super fast, he's not super strong, he's not super tall, he's not a great leaper. He just does a lot of stuff well. At 19, I'd rather have a guy like Jalen Strong who has the height, weight, speed that you are looking for and he's fantastic at getting 50/50 balls. He can be an incredible red zone target with his ability to box defenders out.

It would be awesome if that pushes him to the 2nd round but that's unlikely.

I feel compelled to also put this here, just for the discussion. I don't want to draft him in the 1st round as I feel he's redundant as a guy who lined up in the slot a lot in college.

Browns don't need to waste a visit on Mariota. That'd be pretty much useless at this point.

If Mariota is there at 12, I'm picking him, dumping Manziel and not looking back. I'm actually having a hard time talking myself out of the idea of trading up for him, especially if O'Connell gives a glowing recommendation.

Don't get me wrong, I really like Danny Shelton, DeVante Parker, Malcom Brown and a few others, but even drafting two absolute home runs at 12 and 19 aren't going to change the fact that a soon to be 36-year-old Josh McCown is the starting QB of this team.

Barring some sort of absolutely unforeseen rapid development by Manziel (which seems completely unlikely at this point) we're staring 5-11 in the face with our current QB group.

If O'Connell reports to the coaching staff that he's not sold on Mariota, and doesn't think he'll be a great QB then that changes things. I personally think he's head and shoulders better than what we currently have, but I'm also a slap dick.
