The Battier face-guarding -- which, BTW, is explicitly illegal everywhere but the NBA -- has always been the most effective (if you can do it) option for a close-out for NBA-level players beyond the 3-pt line.
Unfortunately, Ky's 6-3 without the freakishly long arms that are seemingly dime-a-dozen in the NBA. And, perhaps just as importantly, you need to have a thorough knowledge of every player's shooting form so as not to get a foul call for accidentally hitting the guy in the face or the arm.
BTW, I dunno if any of you have ever played against guys that are good at face-guarding, but it is RIDICULOUSLY hard to score against someone who's really adept at it.
Let's just remember -- as said by someone on Twitter last night (maybe it was Simmons?) -- Smart would probably take a half hour to make 7-10 on consecutive 3's in an empty gym.
It took an all-time performance from a 29% 3-pt shooter, a truly abysmal performance by LeBron, and one of the most convenient bounces in history for the Celts to win last night.
By 3.
On a last-second shot.
If tomorrow night is a meandering shitshow on offense and defense, THEN we should all start ripping our hair out.
