2021 Indians Active Roster Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
@Out of the Rafters at the Q
You laid out a solid plan for calling up & playing people but haven't indicated how Owen Miller is added to the 40 man roster.
If you had been discussing Gabriel Arias coming up that hurdle would not be there.

There are some possibilities for moves to the 60 day IL but I have heard from Bimbo that Perez could be back from his injury sooner than originally expected & there are other considerations in play if moving Vargas.
Yep, I didn't discuss 40-man at all.

I also agree that Arias at short would be very nice right now, but I just don't believe that the organization is going to call him up this year. They could surprise me and go for it, but I think we see him in 2022.

I wouldn't have any problem dropping Chang or Zimmer from the 40-man to make room for Miller. I think they've both proven they cannot be MLB players. Miller for Chang makes sense from the standpoint that they both fill similar roles defensively. Zimmer getting DFA'd makes sense because, if he looks the same this year as he did last year, I think he's the worst player with the least potential.

Yeah, I’m with you on the Arias notion too. I’d be shocked if they called him up this year and if they do, it would be late in the year.

To put a negative spin on this, if this is "peak" Jake Bauers, and he regresses from this point, I'd cut bait immediately. Someone who has this as his high, and then also struggles/slumps, isn't someone I'm willing to continue to trot out there. But if this is his average, and he has peaks or gets hot, and plays better than this, with the defense he provides at first? That's not the weakest spot on the team at this moment.
Oh I still think we need an upgrade.

We definitely still need an upgrade over Bauers, but there isn’t an obvious choice right now to do so. Bobby Bradley isn’t exactly lighting AAA on fire.

Zimmer's 45% K rate so far in AAA isn't looking so great lol. That's always been his issue and it seems to have only gotten worse this year if anything.

Yeah. He hasn't improved at the plate, and last year his defense in center field looked really bad to me.

I'm ready to cut ties and move on from him.

Sad part is I got chewed out on here when I talked badly out Zimmer when he was a prospect....

Zimmer is going through growing pains with new mechanics.

All of his injuries have really screwed over his hitting development because they keep forcing him to change his swing. He had to find an unorthodox stance/swing to combat some of the limitations in the hand he broke a few years ago.

Still like him as a 4th or 5th OFer that can play all 3 spots if he's able to get comfortable with his new swing and come close to regaining his form from 2016/2017.

He's a bigger "what if" for injuries than Naquin. He had consistent 20/20 with Gold Glove caliber defense in CF potential before the injuries ate away at him.

It's really a shame with Zimmer. I thought he'd work out.

Speaking of, Nolan Jones looks a lot like Zimmer at the plate. Can you give us anything positive on him, because I don't see much to hang our hopes on. He's been awful since AFL 2019 and is losing trade value with every AB.

There are too many flame outs on the hitting side to make it a coincidence. Could this be an organizational flaw, too much launch angle philosophy? I hope there's at least some critical discussion about it.

.... really? You want to go there? You want to dredge up the past like this? Especially with how much you've improved as a poster over the years?

If I remember correctly, you got blasted because you told everyone Zimmer was still multiple years away from getting a call-up to the majors, and touted guys who never even made it to the pros over him. Then, when confronted with information, you made up some arbitrary thing about batting average and a .270 line that Zimmer would have to reach to even sniff the major leagues (while completely ignoring OBP and Zimmer's walk rate). Then when Zimmer breached (or maybe just approached?) that arbitrary .270 line you made up, you rightfully got shit for it.

That is a far, far fucking cry away from "I got chewed out for talking badly about Zimmer." You got chewed out for making a stupid take and then refusing to acknowledge information from other posters who tried to help you.

But, that frustrating-as-hell version of sportscoach isn't around anymore (thank God) and you've become a much better, more knowledgeable, and amicable person to converse with. So... let's look forward instead of backwards. :fnd (2):

My eyes tell me that the last time we saw him at the major league level, he lost a lot in the field. Not only athleticism, but it looked like something was going on with him where he wasn't even fielding/judging balls correctly in center.

1) Am I right, or just making shit up?
2) If what I think happened really happened, has he improved from there?

Zimmer was more tentative about going for balls.. both against walls as well as diving for them.. that was clear.. He may have been coached to.. ".. quit playing defense like your hair is on fire..."..

The regular season is pretty much 25% completed as of today, 5/17.

Adding a bat needs to be prioritized and the sooner the better. Bauers has been playing/looking better but that's not really much of an improvement. Owen Miller seems destined to join the team as a SS or and as a 1B rather soon. Miller is striking out a fair amount at the moment, but it's still relatively early and not much of a concern at the moment.

Chang has been given enough of a crack to play 1B/Semi-reg. Gimenez probably needs to regroup in AAA. Bradley will always K a ton, but if he can up the walks he might get a shot later if we don't upgrade by then.

Somehow Bobby Bradley gives me flashbacks to Jesus Aguilar. I remember watching videos of him on the old IBI site. He was as big as a moose. I thought he was the answer and was happy when the Indians brought him up. Unfortunately, he looked clueless. Not ready at all. He never got much of a chance after that, and got let go. He has had a choppy MLB career. But he has made a all-star team and today he leads the NL in RBI.
Because of the mistakes with Aguilar, I think the Indians want to be extra cautious with Bradley, and give him all the time he needs.
