Addressing the hole at center

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Bracing for the inevitable 'panic trade.'

We already botched the AV situation with the extension and the heavy minutes - why not compound it by giving away assets for a washed up tall guy.

haywood is a huge asset to a lot of teams for next summer.

IF you look to move him - you will get a lot of good offers.
no need to add that much to him to get a good player - except for the purpose of balancing salary which could be tricky.

question is, what type of player do you give up that huge asset for ?

imo - has to be a big time sure thing locked up player.
and not sure such a player is currently available.
but perhaps.

The Mozgov to CLE / Wright to DEN / TPE to BOS idea is not bad, although I'd honestly rather have Brandan Wright if he's gettable.

Here's an interesting wrinkle though:

Report: Rockets assuring Smith he'll start if he signs with Houston

Apparently the Rockets are going so hard after Josh Smith that they are promising him a starting spot. That means one of four players suddenly lost a TON of playing time, depending on what position they play Smith at:

Donatas Montejunas
Terrence Jones
Trevor Ariza
Corey Brewer

I just don't see them letting Jones go as he's got the highest ceiliing.

What does anyone think about DMo's ability to play center? He's 7'0", 255 lbs, and currently has the 4th best Opponent's FG% at the rim for bigs behind Dwight Howard, Andrew Bogut and Roy Hibbert.

He was never much talked about before because before the Josh Smith event, he wasn't available. Suddenly Houston looks to have a logjam of bigs.

I haven't seen him play much at center, but that's mostly because he's always been behind Dwight and Asik and hasn't been asked to play there that much.

I would have no problem using the TPE and attaching our Memphis pick for DMo, especially considering that if a better center prospect popped up, DMo's value is just about equal to that pick anyway.

Or better yet, would you include Dion in that package as well and try and get back Ariza too? You could solve your 3&D wing and center problem in one swoop.

Josh Smith, Dion Waiters and a possible lottery pick is not a bad haul for DMo and Ariza.

Actually Jones isn't the best one out of them anymore, he has a bad nerve in his knee that's not being reported and also why they're promising Smith the starting job. D-Mo could get disgruntled by the so called promise. He's worked hard over there in Rocket Town and is becoming a good player, but this stuff could effect him.

I have one small source in my life and it comes from Rockets. D-Mo can be an option for us.

Yup, I was just about to post the same thing.

Works just like a TPE for trades, but only for players on expiring deals.

Yeah, I get what both of you guys mean. I had to look it up in the CBA.

Then you must do your duty!! Use your source to whisper in their ear that a 1st rounder from Memphis would look reeeeeeal nice on their asset sheet.

I expect DMo here by mid January, or I will hold you personally responsible.

Looking at the overall dynamics and resources in play:

We need to acquire at least one big for nothing(i.e. vet min or the disabled player exception). Jermaine O'Neal is the obvious name but there will be other who come available via trade or buyout.

Of our two most valuable assets(Dion and the Memphis pick) we need to hold on to one, combine the other with the Bogans exception and acquire a big 30 years old or younger.

Holding on to Haywood is also key as he presents such a big opportunity in the offseason. Only would be willing to trade him now if the team that acquired him valued that opportunity the same as us and thus would move significant talent for his contract.

Overall though, I keep seeing some posters giving Griffin a hard time for "leaving us" with no assets going forward. This not true. Those were not just tossed aside carelessly or allowed to expire. The assets moved were done so to facilitate signing LeBron to a max deal and trading for Kevin Love.

And what remains is still more than many far worse teams have in their chest(Memphis pick, our own 1st rd picks in 2015, 2017, 2018, the Bogans TPE, and the Haywood contract for next summer) We also now have a disabled player exception via the Andy injury plus the Taxpayer MLE for next offseason.

One clear negative(besides on the floor reasons) of the Andy injury is that this may push is to be over the tax level this year and thus almost guaranteeing that we will be a repeater tax team the following year. I don't think Gilbert will shy away from it but it would have been ideal to delay repeater tax status one more year down the road.

the rules for a disabled player exception (from the coon faq)
  • The team may sign a free agent for one season only, for 50% of the disabled player's salary or the amount of the Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level exception, whichever is less.
  • The team may trade for a player in the last season of his contract only (including any option years)4, who is making no more than 50% plus $100,000 of the disabled player's salary, or the amount of the Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level exception plus $100,000, whichever is less.
  • The team may claim a player on waivers who is in the last season of his contract only (including any option years), who is making no more than 50% of the disabled player's salary, or the amount of the Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level exception, whichever is less.
Note: we can only acquire 1 player with the exception.

So we can sign one player for up to 4.85 million or trade for one player making up to 5.4 million on the last year of their contract. We also have the 5.3 million traded player exception we can use in a trade.
