Addressing the hole at center

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Even if we had second round picks to give New York for Dalembert, I'm not giving them more than one for him. By the way, why would New York agree to a first round swap with us? We are going to be better than them for years to come, that would have no value to them.

why would that swap be limited to this season ?

you give it a 5 year window - and they may take it.

and you're not getting dalembart for anything less than 2 2nd rd picks.
you're looking at a possible starter on a team that expects a long playoff run.

you'd take 2 low 2nd rd picks over that ?
good luck improving your team...

Could we sign a FA center with the injury exception, then package that player with the trade exception, memphis first round, possibly Dion (not that I want to get rid of Dion at all) for Brook Lopez?

can't combine the tpe (or the dpe) with any other player salary for the purpose of balancing salary in a trade.

If New York honestly thinks they are getting two second rounders and a trade exception for Samuel Dalembert, then they have crazier management than I thought. People thought we got fleeced by sending two second rounders for Spencer Hawes for God's sake.

trade exception is worthless for new york.
they're opting for cap room next summer and have to renounce it.

you have a chance to get a starter with the exact skills to fit in, and not give up any rotation player or the bogans tpe and your'e turning that down so you can keep 2 2nd rd picks ?

like I said - good luck...

time of a change in mindset from a bottom feeder to contender.

I don't know how else to explain it.

can't combine a player with an exception for the purpose of balancing an in coming single player's salary.

There are better players out there than Dalembert. Just have to go through the process of due diligence. Dalembert is not as good as you are making him out to be, by the way.

I don't think you can trade the disabled player exception. I believe it is to use only to sign free agents if you have 15 players on the roster.

The Pacers did that, and the Heat have one now too.

Dalembert is such a bummer option. But I'd much rather bring him or Jermaine Oneal in to back up Tristan for the rest of the year than waste either our Memphis pick or Dion on a trade when there will be much, much better targets this summer.

We are really fortunate that, while Tristan isn't the long term answer at center, he's equal or better to the task at the position than Andy was. So for this season, our aim is to shore up our backup center position, unless a really good option is suddenly available.

Then, in the summer, you look for your long term replacement that sends Thompson back to a bench role.

1. We need to take a breath and may need to wait until the trade deadline to do anything. We aren't going to slip out of the top 4 (or, in all likelihood, top 2) in the East with the current roster.

2. Other teams are going to want value back if we are going to get a decent rim protector. So, I don't see how we avoid including the Denver 1st and/or Dion in a trade (along with the Exception).

3. If we DO trade Dion, I think we will sign Ray Allen. So, for at least one year, we may not hurt ourselves too much with the bench. (Can we sign him using the injury exemption?)

4. Perhaps there is a team that wants to use the Haywood contract for itself this summer...however, trading Haywood will still require a substantial asset (1st and/or Dion) to be included. If Haywood can be brought along to give 10-15 min by playoff time, then the TPE does a lot less damage to us.

simon - you can use a disabled player exception to trade for a player, as long as that player is on the last year of his deal.

Yup, I was just about to post the same thing.

Works just like a TPE for trades, but only for players on expiring deals.
