An NFL Insider's take on the Browns

On realgm.com there is a poster by the name of Icness who works directly with the Detroit Lions, but also used to work for the Browns so he still has connections in Cleveland and knows quite a bit about them. He posted his thoughts on the Browns offseason and draft. Here's what he had to say.

********

Here's what I know for the Browns:
1. They are actively shopping the 1st round pick, trying to move down into the 8-14 range and pick up another 3rd rounder (or better).

2. They would take Adrian Peterson without hesitation if he didn't have the injury history or the reckless running style that's likely to keep him that way. But with all the injury issues and the conservatism of Phil Savage, I'd be surprised if they took him. I absolutely expect them to make a strong run at a free agent RB, like a Michael Turner or a Dominic Rhodes. Don't forget they burned a 3rd rounder last year on a RB to complement Droughns, and Harrison will be given lots of chances to prove himself.

3. If they do keep their current picks, I think they'll take Brady Quinn, then address the CB and OL. The Browns have no interest in Jamarcus Russell should he fall.

4. As mentioned earlier, I stated the Browns are putting out the vibe they will take Troy Smith in the 2nd round. I now believe that is more of a smokescreen to build value and perhaps to conceal their true intentions. Yes, I bit too hard on that one. But it could very well happen too. If they don't take Quinn in the 1st, they will draft a QB sometime in the 2nd-4th, be it Smith or Kolb or Stanton, wherever they feel they are getting good value for the prospect. But other than Kolb I don't see any of those guys being quality NFL QBs right away. I love Troy Smith and what he did for OSU, but he's got some deficiencies that are hard to overcome at the NFL level: slow read progressions, iffy accuracy on short passes, does not feel the rush well.

5. Don't be surprised if the Browns are not as active with their free agent cap room as you'd like them to be. I see them going after the 2nd tier guys or injury reclamation projects that are low-risk, though I do think they'll try to get Nate Clements.

I'll try and post anything I pick up here

I asked him who they are trying to add value to, Smith or the pick and why? I also asked him why they wouldnt be more active in free agency. Im still waiting for his reply, but he is generally out scouting during the day so I probably wont get an answer until tonight. I figured you guys would like to have any extra info you could get so here you go.

Interesting stuff. But it's all still speculation at this point. I'm sure Savage doesn't even know what he's going to do yet.

I cant honestly think that Savage is high on Smith. The fiesta game and the senior bowl were awful.

So how reliable is this guy? Is anyone putting him to the credibility test?

I didn't think we traded a 3rd rounder for Droughns, did we?

I already don't believe this guy, we never traded a 3rd round pick for Droughns.

It was Myers and Ekuban for Droughns

He said we burned a 3rd rounder on a player to complement Droughns, meaning we used that pick to draft Harrison.

Yeah I can't read.

He's still wrong, we took him in the 5th.

its higher then yours was...

I dont get, why we would be actively shopping our 1st rounder already. Makes no sense and shows our hand.

Everything this guy said anyone can say, none of this sounds like insider info to me.

I can figure they're pretty high on quinn and peterson. but I think they take a player who helps them immediately and they probably view peterson as that guy.

Ha ha, good point - can't believe I missed that one.

Agreed, enough with the so-called "insiders." Yeah, it's fun to speculate, but no one knows what will happen in April right now. Most of the mock drafts out there right now from the real insiders are laughable at this point. How could anyone really know anything yet???

I wont start believing anything until the individual workouts and the combine has been completed.

Well I understand your hesitancy to trust this guy. However, it is a fact that he works for the Lions and it is a fact that he is watcing all of these rookies everyday and is rubbing shoulders with fellow scouts. As I stated before he used to work for the Browns, and has many ties still with the organization so he takes some interest into what the Browns are trying to do. He has been posting for years and is a moderator in the forum and I have had multiple conversations with him that lead me to truly believe his credibility. So, yes at this point he is as credible as any other insider can be at this point, and is just trying to help us out by giving out information. Yes, he messed up where we drafted Harrison, but so what? If him making a mistake that was probably based off of memory is enough for you to completely doubt him then who in the world would you actually listen to?

If you care to do some follow up on this guy you can go to the realgm forums and then to the NFL one and he posts in there pretty much daily with updates on what he's seen out of the rookies each day. Thought it was at least worth a read.

For what it's worth here's his follow up.

I'd take Brady Quinn over Jamarcus Russell 95 times out of 100 in the NFL. Russell's stats and performances against good defenses are not impressive at all. I'm not completely sold on Quinn either, but he does a lot more things better than Russell will ever do them.

As far as free agency, the Browns don't want to spend big $$ for players that are not significant upgrades. And there's not a lot of free agents who would represent major upgrades at the most needed positions (QB, RB, DE, DT). They'd rather (and I agree with this strategy) go for more affordable, more up-and-coming talent and hope to get a little lucky than to break the bank to pay for what a guy did with his last team. That's why you won't see Charles Grant or Asante Samuel. Clements is different because he's both an OSU guy and he's at a position of dire need of improvement, and he's still young enough to be an impact player for lots of years. The Browns are not alone in that mindset either--don't expect big FA splashes by NY Jets or Houston even though they have lots of cap room.
I do think the Browns will be more active in pursuing vets cut for cap purposes later on--guys like Thomas Jones, Mike Rucker, maybe Ken Lucas or James Hall.

I think the Troy Smith situation is as much PR for the Browns as anything now. I talked with someone over the weekend who would know these things, and he believes the Browns are trying to accomplish two things:
1. Determine if they will be able to get Smith at the top of Round 3.
2. Not offend the local fan base if they truly don't want him.

I'm now led to believe that if the Browns really want Smith and think he'll still be there with their 3rd rounder (I'd put that at 50/50), they'll use the draft strategy of trying to deal down a few spots and take Alan Branch or Amobi Okoye or Adam Carriker; spend the 2nd rounder on a CB or RB; and use their extra pick they get as insurance that they can definitely get Smith. But if you see them stay put and take Quinn (or Peterson, though that's highly unlikely), expect Smith to come off earlier than anticipated.
