Irsay views Manning’s future as “family decision” not “football decision”

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 2, 2012, 4:27 PM EST

AP
When the Polians were shown the door Monday, we guessed that Colts owner Jim Irsay was at least partially choosing Peyton Manning over the team’s front office.

If nothing else, it will make it easier to keep Manning on the roster if that’s what Irsay truly wants to do. And there is no bigger fan of Peyton Manning than Jim Irsay.

Speaking on NBC SportsTalk Monday, Peter King supported this notion.

He’s heard that Irsay views Manning’s future as a “family decision” and not a “football decision.”

So what does that mean?

“It means to me that Jimmy Irsay is going to give Peyton Manning his $28 million bonus unless one of two things happen: Manning absolutely can’t play football or Manning wants out. . . . So I think Irsay has essentially put the onus on himself to make that huge decision.”

It sets up an interesting scenario for the direction of the Colts franchise. Will Irsay only hire a general manager or coach that want to work with Manning? Then again, will many coaches and general managers not want to work with a healthy Manning if Irsay is playing the freight?

Manning’s health has been lost in all the speculation. We truly have no idea if he’ll ever play pro football again. If Manning does play again, Irsay’s “family” approach to the business makes it more likely Manning will remain in Indianapolis.

I can't wait for Heckert to fleece whatever 'green' GM Irsay brings in.

Looks just like a used car salesman.

So it's looking more plausible that Luck could be had.

I could see Indy accepting an offer from the Browns to make a few last runs with Peyton by drafting some play makers. Then drafting a QB(next year or the year after) and allow him to step in with a better foundation than Luck would be coming into. I don't know. I'm just talking shit here.

Didn't see it posted, but it's confirmed that Mendenhall tore his ACL and will miss the playoffs.

Tebow's chances just went from "No Chance In Hell" to "So You're Telling Me There's a Chance?!"

Angelo out in Chicago

Posted by Mike Florio on January 3, 2012, 10:16 AM EST

AP
In December, rumors swirled that Bears G.M. Jerry Angelo was contemplating leaving the Bears for retirement. The rumors were half right.

Per multiple reports, the Bears have fired Angelo, more than 10 years after he became the team’s General Manager.

Surprising but not entirely shocking, Angelo becomes the fall guy for a late-season collapse fueled by mismanagement of the quarterback position.

And so, while most General Managers survive at least two failed coaching regimes, Angelo hired only one coach during his time in Chicago — and that coach is still there.

The next question is whether coach Lovie Smith will be the next to go. His extension following the 2010 playoff run represented more of a Band-Aid than a security blanket. If the Bears have decided to dip into their buyout budget for Angelo, they may do the same for Smith, especially since every G.M. wants to hire his own head coach.

Chargers announce Norv Turner, A.J. Smith will return

In the end, Chargers president Dean Spanos has decided to love the ones he’s with.

Amid rampant reports of sweeping changes in San Diego, the team has announced that coach Norv Turner and G.M. A.J. Smith will return in 2012.

“Bottom line, I believe these two men give us the best chance to get back to the playoffs,” Spanos said in a team-issued statement. “A.J. Smith is the best man to improve our roster, and Norv Turner is the best man to lead that roster on the field.

“Together, we have stability and experience that’s hard to find in the NFL. They’ve both been in this league a long time. I don’t think there is anything they haven’t seen or experienced. They’ve led us through some difficult situations.

“As we’ve seen throughout Norv’s tenure and particularly this past season, the players believe in him, respect him and play hard for him. When we went through that tough stretch, no one quit. The team kept playing hard, and that’s a tribute to Norv’s leadership and the respect the players have for him.

“Now we will take a hard look at everything, from player evaluation to coaching to the rash of injuries we’ve suffered in recent years. Injuries have killed us. And no one is ever perfect in this business. Player evaluation isn’t an exact science. We need to improve across the board and I’m going to make sure we do.

“We all have our quirks and faults, but I want A.J. and Norv on my side. They are the right men to help us win a championship.”

Possible Translation? “I know they’re both a little goofy. But If I would have fired these guys, there’s no guarantee I would have gotten anyone better.”

And let’s not be naive. Spanos undoubtedly gauged the interest of guys like Bill Cowher and/or Jon Gruden, who would have infused excitement, sold tickets, and ultimately helped lay the foundation for a new stadium. Presumably, both men politely said no and thanks.

Let’s also be extra-cynical. Maybe Spanos actually wants to move the team to Los Angeles. What better way to do it than to make a move (or, more accurately, not make a move) that will be horribly unpopular with the fan base?

Norv returning is sort of surprising.

So it's looking more plausible that Luck could be had.

Larry Fitzgerald upset about one drop in 153 passes thrown his way

Larry Fitzgerald is a perfectionist.

Fitzgerald, the Arizona receiver who concluded the season by leading the Cardinals to a win over the Seahawks on Sunday, was alerted to the fact that he dropped only one pass during the 2011 season, and he responded by saying that one drop is one too many.

It started with Mike Sando of ESPN.com noting on Twitter that Fitzgerald had just one drop on 153 passes thrown his way, and that the other three NFL players who had more than 150 targets (Roddy White, Wes Welker and Calvin Johnson) combined for 22 drops.

Fitzgerald saw that and responded with a tweet saying, “1 too many.”

Fitzgerald’s one drop of the season came in the game that was the Cardinals’ worst performance as a team this year, a 34-10 loss to the Vikings. That was early in the season, when the Cardinals got off to such a bad start that they were largely written off as one of the worst teams in the league.

However, the Cardinals closed the season by winning seven of their last nine games, and Fitzgerald showed once again that he’s one of the NFL’s best players. With Fitzgerald leading the way, the Cardinals are not a bad team.

Just think how good Fitzgerald — and the Cardinals — could be if Arizona had some stability at quarterback.

153 targets, 1 drop. Ridiculous. With no Qb, their offense is still a joke though.

About to get a look at Barry Sanders kid in the Army All-American bowl on NBC. Hope he's good.

Sources: Chiefs' Romeo Crennel to stay

By Adam Schefter
ESPN
The Kansas City Chiefs plan to retain interim head coach Romeo Crennel, according to league sources.

Chiefs officials could not be reached for comment Saturday, and a timeline for when they'll make an announcement was uncertain.

Crennel has a good relationship with general manager Scott Pioli and is well-liked by his players.

And the Chiefs' Week 15 win over the previously unbeaten Packers and their 2-1 record after Crennel was named interim coach also worked to his favor.
