Illinois high school investigated for appearance by NFL's Colt McCoy

A group of Illinois high school football players were thrilled when NFL quarterback Colt McCoy dropped by to speak about his faith and toss the pigskin around with them, but the agency that oversees prep sports in the state is considering throwing a flag.
Ken Leonard, athletic director and football coach at Sacred Heart-Griffin in Springfield, said McCoy, the starting signal caller for the Cleveland Browns, visited the school on March 13 while in town for the annual Fellowship of Christian Athletes banquet. While at the school, McCoy "threw the ball around a little bit" to several students, including football player Malik Turner, prompting a complaint to the Illinois High School Association about whether the workout represented an illegal, off-season practice for the Cyclones.
"He shared his faith and played with them and threw the ball around a little bit," Leonard said of McCoy. "It was unbelievable experience. I'm sorry if any rules were broken, but in this instance, if I was wrong, I don't want to be right."
Matt Troha, assistant executive director for the Illinois High School Association, confirmed that the organization has requested information from school officials regarding McCoy's appearance.
"The crux of the issue doesn’t revolve around Colt McCoy’s appearance or involvement, but rather the IHSA by-laws that dictate the types of activities a coach and team can organize and participate in when a sport is not in-season," Troha wrote FoxNews.com in an email.
Leonard said Rick Sanders, coordinator of athletics for Springfield Public School's District 186, contacted Illinois High School Association officials regarding the brief football toss.
Sanders, meanwhile, denied submitting the complaint in an email to FoxNews.com.
"Neither I, nor any member school of Springfield Public School District 186 have made a formal complaint to the IHSA nor is it expected that I, nor any member school of SPS will make a formal complaint regarding this incident you referred to in your e-mail," Sander's message read.
Sanders said he's "heard nothing but how great Colt McCoy is as a person" and how wonderful the interaction was with the students and adults he visited on March 13.
"For some kids, it was a chance of a lifetime to be involved and interact with a current NFL quarterback," Sander's message continued. "We certainly hope the media can focus on how Mr. McCoy devoted his time that day to enrich the lives of some members of the Springfield community."
Roughly 10 students, including some football players, attended the brief workout session at the school's football field, Leonard said. In his 28 years of coaching at the school, Leonard said McCoy's appearance is the first time a complaint has been filed in connection with such an activity.
"I take the blame if there's any punishment, but we didn't do it with the intent to gain any advantage," Leonard continued. "We did it for a life experience. He talked to them about life and prayed with them. We need more male role models like Colt McCoy or Tim Tebow, that's what's important. Football had nothing to do with it."
Attempts to reach McCoy were unsuccessful on Thursday.
Marty Hickman, executive director of the Illinois High School Association, was unavailable for comment on Thursday, but he told the Springfield State Journal-Register that the matter is being reviewed.
"But my take on it is, it seemed to be fairly inadvertent," Hickman told the newspaper. "He (McCoy) was in town, looking for somebody to throw to. I don’t think they were trying to gain any advantage. It was a unique situation.”

1) Good grief
2) First time quoting a fox news article on here.

"He shared his faith and played with them and threw the ball around a little bit," Leonard said of McCoy. "It was unbelievable experience. I'm sorry if any rules were broken, but in this instance, if I was wrong, I don't want to be right."

Best line of the article

If I edited the article to include, "We reviewed the situation thoroughly and concluded that he wasn't much better than the Cyclones starting Qb, so we're just going to let the matter drop. A three yard slant is about the furthest completion all day and my grandmother can do that, honestly." -would that be wrong?

Christ, I remember when I flipped out over my drunk ass ringing up a 100 dollar bar bill once. Granted I was a poor college kid and not a pro athlete, but still. How many bottles of Dom is this guy handing out?

So much for saving money in advance of a lockout.

With the NFLPA trying to get its players to take seriously the threat of a potential work stoppage that would wipe out 17 games checks in 2011, not every player has gotten the message.

The folks at TMZ report that Vikings left tackle Bryant McKinnie racked up a $100,000 bar tab on Thursday night in Hollywood. At the MyHouse club, site of the NBA All-Star “Kick Off Party,” McKinnie’s purchases included more than 15 bottles of expensive champagne.

NFL Stud Drops $100K in Hollywood Nightclub

Minnesota Vikings superstar Bryant McKinnie was the ULTIMATE baller during a celebrity party at a Hollywood nightclub Thursday night -- dropping more than $100,000 on his bar tab ... TMZ has learned. Sources at the NBA All-Star "Kick Off Party" at MyHouse nightclub -- hosted by rapper Rick Ross and model Rosa Acosta -- tell us the 6'8", 335 lb lineman ordered more than 15 bottles of expensive champagne ... among other things.

We're told some of the bottles of champagne were so big -- the entire club stopped to watch the wait staff bring them to Bryant's area to crack 'em open.

FYI -- Bryant is reportedly due to make $4.9 million in 2011 (barring a strike).

Same dude who also got kicked off a Pro Bowl team because he didn't show up for practices and meetings because he was too busy at strip clubs. Who gets kicked off a Pro Bowl team? Seriously?

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland Browns coach Pat Shurmur held a conference call with the media on Monday.
A transcript (questions are paraphrased):
Pat Shurmur:
"As you know it's the start of the offseason program, and it's obviously exciting for me to have the players back in the building. I got a chance to see most of them. Really aside from a couple of guys, we've got an outstanding turnout for the first day. They are getting their weight training in and I'm sure you all know the rules on it. We are in phase one of basically a nine or 10 week program. Its 10 weeks total with a week off, but I am going to go straight through with nine straight and give them their week off at the end. We are in phase one for a couple weeks now where it's basically weight training with our strength coaches then they will be able to meet with their assistant coaches, but not go on the field. As we get into phase two and three then we will get into the OTAs and the mandatory minicamp. Then after the draft we will have a rookie weekend minicamp. Its Mother's Day weekend that weekend so I'll have some people upset I'm sure (joking). I'm excited. For coaches to see players back, I think that's an exciting thing. From what I can tell talking to the players, there is excitement to be back. For a lot of our veteran guys, their body clock says that the offseason program started a month ago. Most of these guys I'm sure have been working out on their own, at least the ones I have spoken to, and now they get an opportunity to train with their teammates."
Question: Have you talked with Colt McCoy during the offseason?
Shurmur: "We visited this morning actually. I saw him this morning, we talked. He is doing fine. He is looking forward to getting going here with the offseason program."
Question: Did you feel a need to talk to McCoy about the team's pursuit of a quarterback during the offseason?
Shurmur: "Nope. Like a lot of the other players who I have spoken to throughout the offseason, I didn't think that was necessary. We just kind of greeted each other and we started talking about really what we want to get accomplished in the offseason more than any other business."
Question: What will the the offseason program give them that they didn't have last year?
Shurmur: "An offseason program. I don't mean to be funny, but this is my first offseason program. I think it gives you a little bit of clarity knowing how much work needs to get done on the field in the latter part of May and June. This period here is mostly strength and conditioning and meeting time. I'm looking forward to it. I understand and realize how important these can be so you can get your systems in place or refined. The players have a chance to work together and it starts to develop a winning chemistry. When you get through this body of work, then they have a couple of weeks off then you try to repeat the football part of it in training camp as you prepare for the season."
Question: What about the new restrictive offseason rules and how it affects them?
Shurmur: "I had to really dig in on what the actually rules were because I want to make sure we follow the rules. I do think that structure and having boundaries that you don't cross are good. I think there is enough time here in a nine or 10 week period to get what you need to get done to get ready for training camp. I am good with it. The one thing you want to be able to do is you want the players to be here and excited about doing the work. You want to be able to get a lot done then put it to rest as you get ready for training camp. From what I saw, the players are looking forward to going over and revisiting the things we did well last year and making improvements on the things that we didn't do well. You get to work with some of the new coaches and some of the new players. For me, I just have a much better view of what our team is and the areas we need to improve in to get ourselves in a position to play in the playoffs and compete to play in the big game. I think that's what we are looking to do."
Question: How are the players health-wise?
Shurmur: "Terrific. I think everybody on the squad is out there doing what they have to do. We are fine."
Question: Is Scott Fujita here and has he heard anything about his situation?
Shurmur: "Scott is not here today and I have not heard anything. My understanding is that he is in New York today, but I don't know any details."
Question: How is Marcus Benard doing?
Shurmur: "He looks good. I am hoping to see the best of Marcus and he looks good. I have seen him a couple of times through the offseason and he was there today. I didn't get a chance to watch in the weight room, I am not allowed to be in there yet, but from what I heard, he performed well."
Question: Will Benard switch to linebacker?
Shurmur: "No, our thoughts are to keep him at defensive end and have him in there competing. We haven't talked about moving him to linebacker."
Question: What do you think of Ryan Tannehill?
Shurmur: "I think you guys are going to visit with Tom (Heckert) here. I'll leave that for Tom."
Question: How involved are you with the draft process?
Shurmur: "I'm very heavily involved and I talk to Tom every day."
Question: Was there anyone who did not come to today's workouts that you hoped would be there?
Shurmur: "No, I think the turnout was actually very good. There are a couple of guys who aren't here that I knew why, and there was communication as to why they weren't here. It was a great turnout in my opinion."
Question: Are there things that you normally would want to accomplish that you can't because of the new rules?
Shurmur: "No, we'll be able to get everything we need done, for sure. Although the rules may sound restrictive, I feel like we'll be able to get everything accomplished that we need to this offseason."
Question: What conclusions can you make about the running backs at this point?
Shurmur: "The guys that are here are healthy and they are going to compete. You have Montario (Hardesty), Brandon Jackson, Chris Ogbonnaya and Armond Smith right now. They were all here today and I know, from our conversations, they are very eager to improve."
Question: How much can you interact with the players at this point?
Shurmur: "Right now, they can only be in the building a certain number of hours and most of that, for the first couple of weeks, involves weight training. We as coaches, we have an opportunity to meet with them. Yes, we can and I did. I had a meeting with the players and beyond that they talked with their position coaches and their coordinators."
Question: What's a typical day in phase one of the offseason program?
Shurmur: "First of all this is all voluntary, I think that is an important thing to remember. That's why with the fact that the turnout was so good, it tells me that they are excited to get back to work. So number one, that's an important thing. It's not a mandatory thing so the fact that they are here says a lot about the direction that this team wants to go. Most of their time is involved with strength training and working with our strength coaches, Kent Johnston and Rick Lyle. Then there is a small portion within that four hours where they'll spend time with their position coaches as well. In phase one, it can only be in the class room and not on the field. In phase two, the coaches can then take their activities to the field and work with the players. But at this point, we can't. Phase one is for the next two weeks."
Question: What's the importance of having Brandon Jackson and Montario Hardesty ready for this season?
Shurmur: "I think it's important because you have to have your running backs performing at a high level. To do that, they obviously have to get themselves trained and stay healthy. Of course, we've seen over short periods of time that those players you mentioned, Brandon and Montario, can play at a high level. I'm hopeful that they'll get themselves better, improve like the rest of the players and then be there."
Question: Do you think Hardesty can improve now that he is more than a full year after surgery?
Shurmur: "Again I'm not an expert on that, but I do think he has had a longer time to obviously get his legs back under him. I think that will help him for sure."
Question: Is there anyone you are focusing on to see significant progress during the offseason program?
Shurmur: "Well it's the first day so I don't know how much progress they made in three hours here. I think, and again my message to the team was, everybody needs to improve. Whether you are Joe Thomas, who went to the Pro Bowl, or a first year player a year ago. We all need to improve to get where we need to be. I'm actually looking for improvement from everyone. For the older guys, it's more familiarity with the system. For the younger guys, it's obviously development beyond that as they become professionals."
Question: What are your views regarding the bounty scandal?
Shurmur: "That's a league issue. I would say this, I think player safety is important and I understand the integrity of the game. There are a couple of issues I think that have to guide us and I'll just leave it at that."
Question: Have you heard the Gregg Williams audio tape?
Shurmur: "I did hear it."
Question: What is your reaction to the tape?
Shurmur: "I'm not going to comment on that. Again, that's a league issue."
Question: What about the league wanting coaches to have discussions with players to make sure nothing like that happens?
Shurmur: "There has been education. Really, it was initiated by us. I think as coaches we want to make sure that we do things that right way and of course this will be a point of emphasis. I'll talk to the team about it."

League unexpectedly expands rosters from 80 to 90

Last month, the NFL’s owners tabled until May a variety of proposed changes, including the expansion of the offseason rosters from 80 to 90 players per team.

On Monday, out of the blue, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello announced on Twitter that, as of 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday, the roster limit officially will be expanded.

It means that another 320 players will get a chance to win a job on the 53-man roster via their efforts during a truncated offseason program and a less intense training camp. (It also means that another 320 players will have the chance to say “no, thanks” to an invitation to play pro football — and none will.)

It’s unclear how the change was made apart from the confines of an ownership meeting. It’s possible that a vote was taken electronically or by phone, or that some other approval process was used, given that the change technically will be made to a bylaw, not a formal rule.

As explained by Competition Committee chairman Rich McKay last month, the increase from 80 to 90 will result in a decrease from 90 to 80 players after the third preseason game and a drop from 80 to 53 after the final preseason game, which will flood the market with 864 players less than a week before the first game of the season.

Anyone check out NFL Network's Top 100 players of 2012? The good news: D'Qwell Jackson is 96. The bad news: Tim Tebow is 95.

Give me Jackson over Tebow any day.

Any list of top 100 NFL players with Tebow on it is a joke.

Joe Thomas? Joe Haden?

I mean I figure that half the Ravens and Steelers and Giants Pats and Packers are on but if there missing that's a joke.

Updated with the NFL Draft completion*
Includes sidenotes and rough record predictions**

AFC
1 New England (not significantly better, made some defensive upgrades, but will flourish off of a weak schedule) PREDICTION: 13-3 or 14-2
2 Pittsburgh (Fairly tough schedule, improved the O-line and picked up a burner back, should win division) PREDICTION: 12-4
3 Houston (If Schaub stays healthy, this team is going to run away with this division) PREDICTION: 11-5
4 Denver (Peyton Manning is enough to bring them 2-3 additional wins) PREDICTION: 10-6
5 Baltimore (Will regress a tad this year, but still very potent, still an 11-12 win team and SB contender) PREDICTION: 11-5
6 San Diego (Rivers and co. need to put all that talent together and produce without shooting themselves in the foot) PREDICTION: 10-6
--------------
7 Cincinnati (second best draft) PREDICTION: 10-6
8 Oakland (nice pickups, all depends on Carson Palmer) PREDICTION: 10-6
9 New York Jets (care more about being in the spotlight than they do about winning) PREDICTION: 9-7
10 Buffalo (love the Mario Williams signing and Stephon Gilmore drafting) PREDICTION: 8-8
11 Tennessee (picked up a good WR in the draft, only a matter of time before Locker is the starter there) PREDICTION: 8-8
12 Kansas City (Poe could be a GREAT pick, or he could be a huge bust) PREDICTION: 7-9
13 Indianapolis (third best draft; Luck will shine, Fleener was an underrated pick) PREDICTION: 6-10
14 Cleveland (good defense, Richardson will be the best RB in the division this year and Weeden is better than McCoy) PREDICTION: 4-12
15 Miami (reached for Tannehill, didn't do much after that) PREDICTION: 4-12
16 Jacksonville (Blackmon is a good start, but unfortunately, he is THE start of a long rebuild) PREDICTION: 2-14

NFC
1 Green Bay (still the best offensive lineup in football) PREDICTION: 13-3
2 Philadelphia (Talent learns from last year and builds off of the finish) PREDICTION: 11-5
3 Atlanta (Love this team's chances after New Orleans' punishment) PREDICTION: 11-5
4 San Francisco (Teams will figure "The Harbaugh System" out, but the Niners still prove to be good) PREDICTION: 10-6
5 Chicago (Like the McClellin pick, really like Cutler's return, and love the Marshall acquisition) PREDICTION: 12-4
6 Detroit (Team that takes steps towards elite, Stafford and Johnson grow one year closer to glory) PREDICTION: 11-5
--------------
7 New York Giants (Toughest schedule in NFL proves to be too much, but they will regroup next year) PREDICTION: 9-7
8 Carolina (Cam and Keuchly lead the offense and defense, respectively, to a second place NFC South finish) PREDICTION: 9-7
9 New Orleans (After the NFL lambasted the front office and coaches, the talent keeps them in it, but not enough) PREDICTION: 8-8
10 Tampa Bay (best draft this year; Barron wins defensive player of the year and Freeman has a bounceback year) PREDICTION: 7-9
11 Dallas (Claiborne succeeds, the defense plays well, but not enough to stop NY and Philly. Washington splits with the 'Boys, and they'll want Romo out) PREDICTION: 7-9
12 Arizona (Kolb answers the critics that he can handle a starting gig, but the defense of the 49ers proves too much) PREDICTION: 6-10
13 Washington (RGIII has a solid first year, and the Skins have serious optimism for '13) PREDICTION: 6-10
14 St. Louis (Bradford rebounds, but they don't show vast improvement this year) PREDICTION: 5-11
15 Seattle (Flynn fails in Seattle, and fans will call for Jackson or even Russell Wilson) PREDICTION: 4-12
16 Minnesota (Ponder makes Minnesota ponder why they took him early last year) PREDICTION: 3-13

My updated season prediction scale with sidenotes and rough record predictions. Feel free to comment.

I think Indy is about as good as an expansion franchise right now, even with Luck. I don't expect more than 2 wins. I don't think anyone in the AFC North can manage more than 10 wins on that schedule. If anyone, the Ravens. Don't think the Panthers or Raiders did enough to make an impact. I think Arizona improves.
