Assistant coaches finalized

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Assistant coaches?

I would only allow lue to sign the dotted line if he came in with the cornrows and was required to keep them :chuckles:

Re: Assistant coaches?

You can say what you want about the Cavs FO, but I feel like they really killed it on this coaching search. Big get for the staff right here.

Re: Assistant coaches?

Lue is young, but has been with the NBA for ~15 years. Great fit to help Blatt transition technically and culturally.

I dont think Blatt really needs that help with culture and transition. . I think Lue was brought in because he is a kick ass coach.

Re: Assistant coaches?

If the rumored salary is correct, Lue may end up being very picky about which head coaching jobs he'd accept. Being so young, making that kind of money, he and his agent may place a premium on getting hired into a great organization down the road vs. just the first job that's offered. Still doubt he plays out the entire contract here. He alread has a good rep around the league. 5 years tutelage under Doc. Then gets named as a head coach finalist here. Then gets to be lead assistant and learn under another great coach. Lue will be a candidate for multiple openings over the next 2-3 years.

I don't mean to be derisive of either of them. Blatt has no NBA experience, so it will be a transition for him. He has said himself that he wants an experienced staff to lean on.

Re: Assistant coaches?

Tyronn Lue has been named the associate head coach.

That rocks! Way to go Cavaliers! You can call Dan Gilbert many things, but cheap's not one of 'em.

I honestly thought we had no shot of luring Lue as an assistant, but money talk$. Now, get Anthony Parker or Mark Price and a big man coach and we're well on our way.

Re: Assistant coaches?

So, we have Blatt and Lue. My five other assistant candidates at this point would be:

Alex Jansen (Jazz asst., coaches Canton Charge to 2 playoff appearances in 2 years. Good coach, relates to players, has a fast tempo and is good defensively).

Bernie Bickerstaff (current Cavs asst., former head coach who can help Blatt transition. Also good for continuity purposes.)

Nate McMillan (just under 1000 career games coached and had a .516% career win percentage, which is pretty good. Slow pace, but that won't be an issue considering he won't be in charge of anything. Good mentor to Blatt and players. Also is an assistant on the Team USA men's basketball team.). Another option here is Scott Skiles.

Anthony Parker (current scout for the Magic and finished career w/ Cavs. Parker played for Blatt and also played with some of our current players (Kyrie, Tristan, Andy, and Gee [though hopefully not for long]. Great option here because those players respected and loved him so much and with Parker there setting an example, our players will buy into Blatt's system.)

Make Price (beloved Cavs player who fans would love to see back in any role. Could help solve some of the problems in the backcourt and could also be a shooting coach. Has experience coaching throughout the league.)

I'd personally love to see all 5 of em here next year. So excited.

Do we really need 7 coaches?

Re: Assistant coaches?

I think Blatt will likely bring in a Euro type coach whom he knows and trusts.

I think Parker might be possible.

Probably retain a couple guys already here. Kokoskov is likely one due to Griffin connection.

I'd like to keep Jamahl Moseley.

By basically having two lead guys, there is less of a need to have as many coaches.

Blatt
Lue
Kokoskov- Griffin connection with Suns.
Shamir- assistant under Blatt in Israel rumored to be possibly coming.
Mosely- Knows the players

And then maybe one more that Blatt likes. Parker perhaps.

Re: Assistant coaches?

Candidates. Doesn't mean who all would be chosen, just those who should be in the running. We also had 5-6 assistants last year.

You said you wanted all 5. That would make 7.

Re: Assistant coaches?

I really want to see Mosely be retained. I feel that he has a strong rapport with the post-LeBron guys.

Re: Assistant coaches?

I think this is why we waited to have a PC until tomorrow. They had this deal in the works and wanted to announce both Lue and Blatt at the same time so they held it off for a little bit.

That'd be a solid group, especially if Blatt brings Parker on board.

Looks like Shamir is no longer a candidate:
