Assistant coaches finalized

Re: Assistant coaches?

Well now I'm expecting something really bad to happen.

You mean like the best prospect in the draft having a broken foot, a formerly broken back, and probably other medical red flags as well?

Something like that?

Los Angeles Clippers assistant Tyronn Lue has agreed to become the associate head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

In what's believed to be a financially strong assistant coaching package, Lue will partner with Euroleague icon David Blatt, the new head coach of the Cavaliers.

Cleveland general manager David Griffin wanted to pursue the hiring of both coaches after Lue was the runner-up in the process, league sources said. Blatt and Lue have been talking frequently, and Clippers coach Doc Rivers has given Lue his blessing to accept the job, league sources said.

In five years as an assistant under Rivers with the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Clippers, Lue has developed into one of the NBA's most well-regarded young head-coaching prospects, and the Cavaliers franchise believes he'll complement Blatt well.

Rivers now has to replace three assistants on his staff: Lue, Alvin Gentry (Warriors assistant coach) and Kevin Eastman (promoted to Clippers front office).

Lue, 37, played 11 seasons in the NBA for seven teams and won two championships with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2000 and 2001.

Re: Assistant coaches?

Gilbert meddling again.

Gotta hope that cat sells the team at some point. You hate to have a guy that's willing to pay top dollar to help assemble the best coaching staff possible.

Re: Assistant coaches?

Lue will get the opportunity to pick the brain of a world renowned coach. Good for him. He will be a a good medium for the staff/players due to his age & experience. I personally believe Lue is what helped keep Doc over the hump when the Big 3 started to fade. Prior to the Big 3 in Bos, Doc was only a .500 coach. He can relate to the players & knows how to manage egos, I hope Lue will help do the same here.

Re: Assistant coaches?

I agree, this also gives us a former NBA player to relate to the guys, who has come from winning basketball organizations. To me this is the key.

Re: Assistant coaches?

I'm looking at the Clippers in a different light. Doc is letting his assistants go without any push-back. Have to wonder how the Sterling circus is impacting that franchise? Does Doc even want to be there if Sterling is still technically owner as court proceedings take place?

Re: Assistant coaches?

Great hire by our Cavaliers. Griffin is having himself a nice little off-season so far. You can see why other teams were interested in his services. This is a smart smart hire by the Cavs.

Love it!

Re: Assistant coaches?

A guy like Vinny del negro would be an example of what i wouldnt want to see on the coaching staff. a guy who clearly is set on coaching and might Intentionally or unitnentionally undermine a first year nba head coach.. now a former hc whose already done a tour again as an assistant is a different story.

I like bringin in Lue with his own hc title.

I also like alot of the guys the avs already have.. they are top notch development coaches and hopefully blatt keeps them. it will be nice if they are provided some structure

Assistant coaches?

So, we have Blatt and Lue. My five other assistant candidates at this point would be:

Alex Jansen (Jazz asst., coaches Canton Charge to 2 playoff appearances in 2 years. Good coach, relates to players, has a fast tempo and is good defensively).

Bernie Bickerstaff (current Cavs asst., former head coach who can help Blatt transition. Also good for continuity purposes.)

Nate McMillan (just under 1000 career games coached and had a .516% career win percentage, which is pretty good. Slow pace, but that won't be an issue considering he won't be in charge of anything. Good mentor to Blatt and players. Also is an assistant on the Team USA men's basketball team.). Another option here is Scott Skiles.

Anthony Parker (current scout for the Magic and finished career w/ Cavs. Parker played for Blatt and also played with some of our current players (Kyrie, Tristan, Andy, and Gee [though hopefully not for long]. Great option here because those players respected and loved him so much and with Parker there setting an example, our players will buy into Blatt's system.)

Make Price (beloved Cavs player who fans would love to see back in any role. Could help solve some of the problems in the backcourt and could also be a shooting coach. Has experience coaching throughout the league.)

I'd personally love to see all 5 of em here next year. So excited.

Re: Assistant coaches?

Mark Price or AP would be perfect here. I also think that we should keep mosehly just because he relates well to players and is a solid bball mind

Re: Assistant coaches?

Lue is young, but has been with the NBA for ~15 years. Great fit to help Blatt transition technically and culturally.
