Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This game is not a great example of his work. A layman asks:

Does he always play out of shotgun?

Does he ever throw deep? Does he have a vertical passing game?

80% of his passes are 10 yards or less. He relied heavily on YAC in this game.

He has happy feet and is too quick to abandon the pocket.

After a year of watching Kizer, it's just refreshing to see a QB who doesn't overthrow the RB on short routes. :chuckle:

At least it ain't air punishing.

[whiiifffffff!] The air is broken! Heil Hitler!

Just to address two of the things you brought up.

-Haley’s offense last year in PIT ran 71% of its plays out of the shotgun. Other QBs that took more than 68% of their snaps out the shotgun? Wentz, Stafford, Prescott, Newton, Carr, Watson, Smith(KC)

-94% of all throws in the NFL travel between 0-19 yards through the air

-There’s plenty of tape that shows well placed 40-60 yard completions through the air by Mayfield over the past three seasons, even if the Ohio State game doesn’t highlight it.

Very good. Thank you.

It’s not this pronounced in the NFL yet, but over the last 2-3 seasons the league has really begun a transformation offensively towards what you see in that video clip.

Screens, quick-hitting one read passes, heavy on playfakes to create mismatches and bombs to keep defenses honest. With all of it happening primarily out of the shotgun.

I know he has better physical gifts, but Carson Wentz was going to win MVP of the league running a pretty simplistic offense. Hell, Nick Foles won the friggin Super Bowl in the same offense.

As for Goldhammer eating horse shit, people should hold the little prick accountable and make him do it.

Just so sick and tired of him, Grossi, . Anthony Lima and many others that dissed this kid. Fuck them all. Mary Kay Cabot can go get bent too.

The Browns should host an event at Edgewater Park next week. Hue Jackson swims in the lake and has to drink a full beer since he pussied out on the polar plunge. Aaron Goldhammer eats the horseshit and Tony Grossi rides that horse off into the sunset never to be heard from again.

Give the man a chance.

The Browns have Taylor. He has time to learn as the rest of the team, starts to kick ass.

If they do what I think they'll do tomorrow, the D will be elite.

Are you thinking Hurst? Would you consider pairing Josh Jackson with Ward?

I’d pay to see this happen. Not a fan of Hue have much more love for him than the other 2 hacks.

I think many people get zeroed-in on their guy, like Darnold or Rosen, or our friend MidwestCav and noted Josh "Just Jokin' Racist" Allen, and don't actually do too much homework on the guys they don't like.

Or they downplay traits because they are too busy supporting their favored pick. Confirmation bias if you will.

The pick may have compelled a lot of people to do more in-depth research into Mayfield.

I for one tended to ignore Mayfield's positives in favor of his negatives. The pick has forced me to be more objective.

Intriguing response.

Thank you for the honesty.

I'd bet Mayfield was head and shoulders the #1 prospect according to Sashi and the past regime.

Yeah, Mayfield was absolutely the analytics darling of this QB class.

Does that mean Sashi definitely would have drafted him? No. But I think it's at least very likely.

I want everyone to seriously take the time to watch at least the first minute of this video.

It’s Rick Neuheisel talking about Mayfield’s pro talent. He goes on to say when asked about Mayfield that “we haven’t seen a player with this type of arm talent for some time”, “ he has this inate ability to throw people open”..

There are also some RIDICULOUS examples of his arm strength in here for anyone who says it’s average or whatever.

One thing you’ll notice about Mayfield is there isn’t just one type of velocity on his passes.

He can throw with touch if he needs to, and he can absolutely fucking rope it if he needs to. This has not been talked about enough, because he absolutely knows the situations when he needs to use both too. Tremendous skill.
