Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Line sucking or receivers sucking? Both?

Neither Higgins nor Landry “suck.” If you play them out of position or force them to do things on the field beyond the scope of their physical capability, the outcome will be unproductive.

Higgins, Landry, Johnson and Njoku have all shown to be plus players when they’re being used properly within the offense and to their skill set which are the intermediate routes wherein you develop separation with technique and footwork — as well as coordination.

The skill player I would accuse of sucking is Callaway. he’s fast enough to be a deep threat but can’t catch for shit; therefore, he kind of just blows right now.

We need a player — with reliable hands — as well as the physical capability to generate downfield separation. This makes a difference in an offense and we simply don’t have it. It isn’t an indictment on the other players.

Is YPA determined by distance thrown or simply # attempts/total yardage?

I'm inclined to believe that we are in the bottom fourth of the league in YAC. No line to allow deep routes and minimal YAC.

It's attempts / total yardage.

I think some are being hard on Calloway who was is a 4th round rookie being asked to be our loan deep threat. Higgins was pretty awful his rookie year and has developed since, I think Calloway still has a pretty high ceiling.

Also not trying to defend our line as our tackles have been below average, but Baker has received an average amount of time to throw the ball.

The issue is we are an average team with most of our talent being young with some pretty bad coaching. Our expectations are high for a rookie QB who is putting up very good if not great rookie QB numbers in spite of the poor coaching.

I just thinking we are over thinking this. Baker is a rookie an the coaching has been bad. No other reason why Baker hasn't been even better, but lets not pretend Baker hasn't had a great rookie season for a QB so far INSPITE of the poor coaching.

We're being hard on Callaway because he's been godawful this year. Doesn't mean he'll always be bad. The potential is there, but he's been a disaster for most of this season. I'm hopeful that a better coach next year will get more out of him.

The thing we need to take into account with Calloway is that he was out of football for almost 2 years. It’s hard to play at an elite level like that especially when you’re making the jump to the NFL

You can kinda say the same for Harrison... Both of them have rough moments but showed flashes... Ideally this would have been sort of a redshirt year for them, but the injuries and roster circumstances didn't allow it to happen... Both have potential, hope they both pan out in the long run... Patience and development plan is needed for both

Yeah....

Except Callaway is 21 and Harrison is 25. Harrison likely never "develops" the way we want.

I didn't watch the game but how did Greg Robinson perform at LT?

He's 25, but I don't really see how that means he's capped developmentally because of it. He hasn't received consistent high level coaching so I don't know how he could be considered a finished product despite his age.

Maybe he's been really studious in watching videos of OL technique on youtube, but I'd hope he can still be coached up

Someone who suffers thru these games please correct my perception of Harrison:

Dude moves really well laterally.
Dude is prone to get bull rushed.
Dude obviously makes rookie mistakes.
Generally well liked and good work ethic.

It sounds to me he needs a nutrition and strength plan for the off-season, and some football-related off-season work as well (hit up JT).

I definitely don’t think we should be projecting his career at this point, especially given the incompetence to the point of gross negligence having him start week 1 after not playing w the 1’s in the preseason.

The more I think about it, the more it makes a ton of sense to get Corbett in at G and slide Bitonio out wide, moving Harrison to RT. Should have been done week 1 but fucking Hue man. Then if Bitonio crushes it, you simply have to restructure if he’s asked to play there, and assuming Corbett does well (not great), and Harrison does OK, you can maybe get away with looking to spend early draft capital somewhere else.

I had my 1st round guess at Bama’s LT, but getting a top WR to go w Juice is high up on the priority list. Maybe they go after FAs at WR, since the position takes a bit to develop.

Unfortunately, there isn’t really anyone that fits the mold of a big, #1 WR in FA. Tate is the best option available, but he’d be a bit redundant with Landry. If we’re going to get a #1 WR, it’s going to have to be through the draft or trade. Maybe they can make a move with that extra 3rd round pick?

While moving Bitonio might work, why move him out of a spot where he’s one of the best in the league? I think it’s far more likely we see Corbett at C and Tretter cut loose or traded.

Harrison should definitely be moved to RT. It looks like there’s two elite LT prospects in this draft. No reason we shouldn’t be able to get one given where we should finish. Shut-down corner, QB, Pass rusher, and LT are the four most important positions on the team. If we could lock all of those down with guys on rookie deals, suddenly there’s a lot that can happen in FA.
