Well if this thread had been made in September of 2002, you'd be wrong, because no one thought that team was championship caliber either.
If you'd watch the games, you'd know.
How many points did Akron and Northwestern score in non-garbage minutes on our defense? 0. Zero. Akron got a safety and NW scored on a kick-return with scrubs in, that's it. And the only touchdown Washington got in real minutes was a 2 minute drill TD in the 2nd quarter. The only other great drive they had, ended up with a (King) Laurinaitis INT.
And Washington? Do you know who Locker is? (Ask Herb, or Lee, or anyone, they kept repeating how Locker might be just as good as Vince Young once Locker gets some real playing time in, and Lock is faster than him). Look back, most of the "experts" had Washington winning that game.
And in 2002, Miami was a 2 touchdown pick to win the national title game...in week 1, and 17 point favorites against us. What do you think about that? Did anyone give us a chance? No. Look at our final 3 games. Purdue (Last minute hail-mary TD win), ILL (Overtime win), and UM, (Went down to the final play). So all those close games against sub-par teams - would you have said then that we didn't even have a chance? Because we won.
And then theres Vernon Gholston, James Laurinaitis, and Malcolm Jenkins - 3 of the top players at their respected positions.
So are you saying just because a team isn't ranked in the preseason top 8 (Michigan), that means they CAN'T get to the national title game...it's over.
You must be right. The only teams who even have a CHANCE are LSU and USC. Because those rankings are always right, and they might as well just rank them in the preseason, and play the top 2 in week 1 for the National Title.
Thinking that this team doesn't even have a chance to make some noise is just ignoring the facts.
