Big Ten expansion thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The biggest question I have.....will NCAA 2011 for xBox360 allow you to realign conferences?

Hard to believe Nebraska to the B10 starting in 2011.

Just crazy.

First domino in the B10's favor. I know all the juice is on Texas to P10, but the Big 10 makes soooo much more sense for them. Hope it works out. Big 10 would be a killer conf.

Official now, all regents vote yes.

Hate to get all technical, but all they did was vote to apply for membership in the BT. Granted, it will take the BT about 5 second to accept.

Now...c'mon Texas.

Ah, you're right. But I'm sure Delaney's already got them together or whatever the hell he needs to do.

Does the B10 presidents need to vote (I'm assuming yes) Or does Delaney have athority.

It would be great to have Texas join, but would it really make sense? I would think the Big 10 would also have to take Texas A and M, Baylor, Oklahoma, etc. Geography and distance doesn't really make sense either imo.

Nebraska and Missouri do make sense. So does Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia. :)

At most, A&M would have to accompany UT. Both are AAU members.

Kentucky, Tennessee and WVU are all not AAU emembers. Only non-AAU member BT would accept is Notre Dame.

As far as distance, it would be offset by the money made from TV.

There is a big academic side to this expansion as well. A school like Oklahoma does not have the academic side to be attractive to the Big Ten.

The Big Ten needs to make an offer to Texas if they're serious to wanting them to join. Make an offer to Kansas and Missouri too because Kansas could bring more prestige to the conference on the basketball side. We'd have 15 teams so make the offer to Notre Dame to make 16 teams

Does the ND shoe fit if somehow we snag Texas?

I have no inside information, but I am fairly confident that if Texas and ND wanted in, they'd be accepted in a heartbeat. The problems:

Texas - The Texas legislature will force Texas to find homes for A&M and Tech if they leave the B12. B10 would'nt allow Tech in, even if it meant securing Texas. And it seems Tech wants to go to the Pac, A&M to the SEC, and Texas to either the Pac or BT. Until the three of thsoe schools can get on the same page, they will be in limbo.

ND - Wants to stay independent in football and have Big East affiliation in all other sports. Only way they go to the BT would be if 1 of 2 major changes occurred:

The rest of the Big East was somehow raided by a combination of the BT, ACC and SEC, meaning they have to find a new home for their non-football sports. And the BT would allow them as a full member in all sports.

Or, seismic reconfiguration that lead to a plus-1 system or a full fledged playoff that basically required conference affiliation for a shot at the football national championship. Basically, ND can make the BCS right now just as easily as anyone else. If we went to "superconferences", ND would have to join one, or have no shot at a national title.

This.

People seem to downplay or forget that the Big Ten, while certainly powerful from an athletics standpoint, is all about academics. They're not going to allow schools into the conference simply because they will add revenue from outstanding athletic programs. Hurl is right: Oklahoma will NOT get an invite, nor would they be accepted if they petitioned the conference for admission. Nebraska is in because they have a tradition of being a very good academic school who just so happens to have one of the best football programs in the history of college football. If the Big Ten, which now stands at 12 schools, is going to further expand to 16, as I see it there are only six schools that would definitely pass the "academic test" for inclusion. The other names I've seen bandied about are iffy at best.

- Texas (a fantastic academic tradition)
- Texas A&M (academics on par with Texas, and that bodes well for those of us who want to see Texas join because that would preserve this classic football rivalry)
- Notre Dame (obviously a great academic university)
- Kansas
- Baylor
- Rutgers

I'd place Missouri on the bubble.

By the way, I salivate at the thought of Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Nebraska, Texas, Notre Dame, and Texas A&M all in the same conference. Holy Shit, the tradition!

A&M is just displaying a show of independence before they join the Pac-10.

They don't want it to appear as though they're Texas' little brother (even though they are).

Obviously, the biggest question for the BT now, assuming the BT stops at 12 (which, who knows?), is how will the BT make up divisions.

My guess is Delany and the presidents will a.) protect rivalries and b.) keep competitive balance ahead of geography.

Because of this, I'll bet he keeps OSU and Michigan in one division, and puts PSU and Nebraska in the other. And PSU-Nebraska begins to be the second biggest rivalry. And before you say "Yeah Michigan sucks", note that since 2008, some form of OSU, UM and PSU have finished 1st and 2nd every year save 2004.

Despite the fact that PSU and Nebraska are the 2 farthest schools in the conference (I believe), I think a natural rivalry would spark from a.) being the 2 recent expansion schools and b.) being 2 of the best volleyball schools in the country.

From there, you split up Minny and Wisky, MSU and Iowa, and Illinois and NW, and use 1 cross over rivalry, ala SEC.

So:

"3-yards" division
OSU, Michigan, NW, Purdue, Minny, Iowa

"Cloud of dust" division
Nebraska, PSU, Illinois, Indiana, MSU, Wisky

Cross over rivalries:

Nebraska - Iowa - "Trev Alberts Trophy" game
OSU - PSU
Michigan - MSU
Minny - Wisky
Indiana - Purdue
NW - Illinois

(Note you could flip Indy/Purdue and NW/Illinois and really make no difference).

Most of the trophy games say annual, and even under the 11 team format, not every trophy game was annual.
