Bowe Bergdahl freed by Taliban after five years of captivity

I seriously can't tell if he is one of the worst posters on RCF or one of the best. Just can't.

I think the guy has been through enough.

As it is, he's going to get some book/movie deal that will essentially permit him to profit off his desertion, which is a lot more than his fellow soldiers got for completing their service.

Some actual brig time will at least tarnish the "poor victim of an unjust war" halo some are going to give to him because of this.

Yeah, like I said, the guy has been through enough... He's going to get a book deal regardless.

I think the reports of Bergdahl being charged are premature. Most of the speculation seems to be coming from a lot of long-retired light birds working for Right-Wing think tanks who in no way would make this a partisan issue.

We'll see.

I pinged one of my friends who served in Bergdahl's unit. This is his perspective:

"While with Blackfoot [B Company, 1st Battalion, 501st Infantry Regiment, Bergdahl's unit], he basically kept his nose clean and didn't draw any undue attention prior to the incident. Their senior line medic (friend #1) thought he was just a run-of-the-mill dumb private, and friend #2 in his platoon thought the same; wrote off his quiet nature as just the hallmark of a private who figured out how to not get smoked. The first thing that should have gave that little bastard away was when he asked his gunner what would happen if they were missing a 9. Gunner told him what was up, and thought that was that. A few days later, they find him gone, and his kit laying all nice and neat on his rack, including journals dating all the way back to Day 1 of Basic, saying, essentially that "He couldn't wait to get to Afghanistan so he could go out into the Hindu Kush and get his 'John Rambo' on". Bergdahl planned this from the beginning, put on one hell of an act. The original 15-6, which was worked up by one of the LTs from HHC ended with the statement of "Should be shot on sight for desertion in the face of the enemy". And Bergdahl's family is just as much a bunch of pretender clowns as he is-- that charming family sob story is a lie--he ran away from home and they didnt give a damn about him until they thought they could take advantage of the situation."

What cracks me up is the level of indignation by some folks....

Here's a simple question: who should go on trial first, Bowe Bergdahl or George W. Bush and Dick Cheney?

Cue rationalizations for perpetual war and hegemony.

But yeah, if some of you agree to put Bush et al on trial, I'm fine with putting Bergdahl on trial. Accountability, right?

Of course they are indignant. People died trying to rescue him.

Maybe more scrutiny should be applied to folks like Cheney, but at the end of the day, Bergdahl broke the law and he will be punished if they choose to prosecute.

Re-read what you just said and you'll see why it's so confusing to me.

You're an adult, you now exactly why it shouldn't be confusing. Heads of State do not get prosecuted (for better or worse).

And you're an adult as well; and you obviously get my point -- again, there's no justification for the obvious patter of doublethink here.
