Browns 2016 Off Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm hopeful Cam's unquestioned struggles came from a lack of position coach. I hated the pick at the time, but nobody expected Erving to struggle that mightily as a rookie. If Hal Hunter, second generation Browns coach, wants to make his mark as an NFL coach this year... tapping into Erving's potential is the way to do it.

Losing both Schwartz and Mack would be devastating. Building through the draft only works if you sign the draft picks you hit on.

I understand on Mack's side it was all on him, but I would have looked at tagging Schwartz. I know it is an 'overpay' but damnit I hate making new holes when we can prevent it.

No matter what you keep Erving. Guy has the skill & versatility he just has to put on more weight (muscle) in the upper body and learn more. He is definitely not at the "let's trade for way less value than 1st-19th pick."

If we lose Gipson, which we probably will, then I would love to pick up Iloka.

Dudes 6'4, as well. 4.66 40yd coming out in 2012. That height though could help against deep balls against the likes of Green, Mart. Bryant and other taller WR's in the AFC North. He's also athletic enough and has the arm length to cover big TE's. And we do play Gronk, Witten, Reed & Walker this year, as well. Plus he's only 26.

I am all for it.

Well, things are looking up for Iloka...gonna have like 10 teams trying to sign him and upping his paycheck.

TBH I think Erving struggled a ton. Couldn't have looked worse at times, but I did think he progressed towards the end of the season. Hopefully he hit the weight room hard this offseason.

Nice to see the new regime is as clueless as the old one.

On a team littered with holes they just seem committed to creating more to fill.

Good thing we hoarded all that cap space to let sit on the books while home grown players flee in free agency.

Signings haven't begun yet, the franchise hasn't had an opportunity to do anything. I can't imagine a less fair time frame to assess this front office. The equivalent of rushing to judgment would be going in on the first day of jury duty and shouting, "This guy is guilty, give him the chair" before you hear the case.

I mean, you do realize the FA off-season really doesn't even start for another week, right?

From what we are reading the chances of keeping Mack/Gipson/Benjamin don't look so hot at this point.

We have a shit ton full of cap space this off-season and there is no reason to be letting productive, home grown talent leave. It sends a bad message to the locker room, and flies in the face of building through the draft.

The front office has to work within the league rules of free agency.

Benjamin is a bit overrated. He is one of 3 productive short wr's we have, i actually do not want to resign him, need to add some size to our receiver core.

I like Gipson but we cant over pay just to keep him. He is a border line all pro, so prefer to keep him for sure.

As for Mack, i would personally be willing to pay him the most of any center, he makes the line go, but it takes 2 too tango.

Because they don't want to be there...obviously.

This isn't Madden, you can't just re-sign everyone you want before the off-season starts.

If you took two seconds to actually look around the league, you'd see that league-wide agents are being told by their representatives to go into the market.

Why? Because the salary cap went up more than expected and teams have ample dollars to spend.

It's a pretty simply concept, so I can understand why you're struggling with grasping it.

I couldn't agree more. If you look carefully at the number of passing downs he appeared on the field compared to other receivers, his numbers are pedestrian. In addition, he was a de facto #1 option out of the receiving corps, on another team he wouldn't have gotten so many passes thrown his way... which he often failed to capitalize on. Tack on his dreadful run blocking and I'm not as sold as other Browns fans. If Benjamin plays hardball in negotiations and points to raw yards in receptions and returns, I am very comfortable watching him walk.

Before the injury, he was a borderline All Pro. Last season, he was borderline benched. I prefer him to stay and hope last season has Gipson at 80%, but I'd prioritize other free agents, including Schwartz and Mack.

As for Mack, i would personally be willing to pay him the most of any center, he makes the line go, but it takes 2 too tango.

Another guy who slipped a little due to injury, but is likely primed to be back to 100% in 2016.

After all we've been through it is amazing that we are still surprised that our high draft picks struggle mightily. Frankly it would be surprising if they actually performed to expectation!
