Browns 2016 Off Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'd like to see what Erving can do under a new coaching staff, instead of a team without an offensive line coach that's trying to make him play five different positions in his first year.

Pick a spot for him, preferably RT if they can re-sign Mack.

We have already argued about this a lot, but I really don't think a lot of Erving's struggles were because he was learning too many positions. Getting dominated in pass protection on a 3 technique is more about lack of any fundamentals in pass pro than it is about how hard it is to remember the plays at different positions. Erving got consistently physically dominated. It wasn't as if he were just missing assignments, he was picking them up, and then getting his ass put down.

I personally think the 'he played multiple positions' thing is overblown. He needs to be significantly stronger and play with better technique. If you think the technique is due to him playing different positions I disagree.

More than anything I think his attitude sucks. When he was a weekly vine joke getting blown up he came out and said 'I don't care because these fans can't even touch my fingernails' or something along those lines. Basically saying fans can't do it any better. Well sick story Cam, I'm 100% sure you would suck at my job. But if someone criticizes me at work I don't fucking bring up that Cam Erving couldn't even do my job. It bears no relevance.

At another time he said no player is perfect with regards to how putrid his rookie season was. Implying these is no distinction between miserable and perfect. I think a lot of that has to do with the locker room Pettine created that didn't take any accountability, so hopefully he has a different attitude with Hue, but I'm not very optimistic on Erving.

HUE JACKSON ON MACK:

"You can put it up there with the quarterback when you have a guy like that who has played so well for so long," Jackson said during the Cleveland Auto Show at the I-X Center. "We understand the situation that he's in, and he has a right to do what he's doing right now."

--Mack's agents can begin contract negotiations with other teams beginning at 4 p.m. Monday.

--"I'm not concerned about anybody right now," Jackson said when asked about Erving's rough rookie season. "I haven't been around him, and until I get a chance to watch him in the weight room, get a chance to coach him and spend time with him will I be concerned with any player on our roster."

Seeking starters:

Jackson agreed the Browns are hoping to acquire two or three starters in free agency.

"I would say that would be one of the goals, but it can't be the only goal because we also know you can get outbid," he said. "That's just part of it. So we'd like to have that happen, but if it doesn't, I don't think we're going to bury our head in the sand. We also know the draft is coming [in late April], and that's the next place where you build your team."

Restricted free agents:

The Browns also have four restricted free agents: wide receiver Terrelle Pryor, offensive lineman Austin Pasztor, outside linebacker Scott Solomon and special teamer Don Jones.

--NFL teams have until 4 p.m. Wednesday to submit qualifying offers to their restricted free agents for whom they desire to retain a right of first refusal.

"I think we'll do what we need to do as far as those guys are concerned to see if we can get them back," Jackson said. "We'd love to have them. We'd love to have all of the restricted guys and all the free-agent guys. We'd like to have them all back, but we'll see how this all unfolds."

Browns coach Hue Jackson sees potential in Carson Wentz, Jared Goff but says he needs more time to decide if one is his future QB:

Browns coach Hue Jackson said he saw potential in the top-rated quarterbacks last week at the NFL scouting combine, but he insisted Thursday night he isn’t completely sold on North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz or California’s Jared Goff as the franchise’s future yet.

“Until I can spend more time with those players will I know for sure,” Jackson said during the Cleveland Auto Show at the I-X Center. “Obviously, my eye was on the quarterbacks, but I think it’s way too early to know.

Jackson said he “felt good” about Wentz and Goff competing at the combine and meeting with the team. But his main takeaway was, “I need to keep seeing them.”

One will be the first quarterback drafted on April 28, likely second overall by the Browns.

Even if Jackson does have a favorite, he certainly wouldn’t reveal his preference. On the other hand, there are several steps left in the pre-draft process.

“We’re not anywhere close to being able to make a decision on what is best for us,” he said.

Jackson reiterated he’ll attend the private workouts and pro days of Wentz and Goff, and you can bet the Browns will parade them through team headquarters for official pre-draft visits.

Wentz’s pro day is March 24. Goff’s is March 18.

“How fast can I get there?” Jackson said. “Yes, I will be there.”

Although Jackson was guarded with his answers, he addressed a few specifics about Wentz, Goff and the position in general.

•
On Goff reportedly interviewing poorly when he met with the Browns at the combine: “I don’t know where that came from. I think all the young men that we talked to did a great job.”

• On Wentz playing lower-level college football: “When we took [Baltimore Ravens quarterback] Joe Flacco [out of Delaware], everybody said the same thing. I think we’d love to have him right now, wouldn’t we? If a guy can play, he can play.”

• On Goff playing in a shotgun, spread system in college: “Everybody says I play in a gimmicky offense. That’s what everybody says. I don’t think that has anything to do with it. ... I don’t get concerned about what school they come from, what kind of offenses they play in. I get concerned about can they do the things that I’m looking for a quarterback to do.”

• On the first thing he watches when he evaluates quarterbacks: “My eye really goes to their poise under duress. Can a guy really manage and hold himself back there when everything’s bearing down on him? Is he willing to stick his back foot in the ground and be compact and deliver the ball down the field? If a guy will demonstrate that, it tells me he’s not scared. But a guy that has a soft back foot, you better look out. He can’t play long in this league.”

• On the importance of hand size: “Hand size is important because in the AFC North, there’s snow, there’s rain, there’s all kind of elements that you have to deal with. And sometimes if a guy doesn’t have a big enough hand, he can’t hold onto the ball and the guy can get stripped. I’ve seen it happen too many times. But that is not the only characteristic that you look for. But it is something that does go into an evaluation.”

• On Goff’s hands measuring 9 inches, which is below average: “As long as he can hold the ball and he doesn’t get stripped, it’s not a problem to me. But if there’s a problem that way, then it would be a consideration.”

Before Jackson met reporters at the auto show, his first public appearance since being hired Jan. 13, he reiterated in a radio interview the Browns are inclined to draft their quarterback of the future rather than sign one in free agency, which opens at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

“We’re going to take every shot that we can to find a franchise quarterback, and I think we all know you don’t find them in free agency, you draft them,” Jackson told WKNR (850-AM). “That’s when you find the right guy.”

Jackson also complimented veteran quarterback Josh McCown and said he could serve as a bridge starter next season if necessary. However, Jackson said the organization is looking toward the future. Wentz or Goff will likely represent it.

“We want to draft a quarterback,” Jackson said on the air. “But it’s got to be the right fit, it’s got to be the right person, it’s got to have the right feel.”

It's going to eventually leak that Scheiner was involved in some sexual harassment. I'm not sure if he was directly harassing anyone, but it went on under his watch. There are several NDAs signed for this; Joe Lull was approached by Alec himself when Lull almost spilled the beans while drunk and pissed off.

From what I was told, this was a large reason why Dee Haslam spent so much time in the building towards the end of the year.

Alec Scheiner may or may not have been involved with a sexual harassment issue in the building. That will come to light or it might not. We can be sure that Alec Scheiner was involved in a front office ripe with poor execution, resulting in a fractured vision for the franchise, public infighting about personnel, and less talent on the field than when he took the job. That is enough for me.

I hope he takes Swagger and those soccer tifos with him.

If he messed up big time, whether it be sexual harassment or something else, why would the Browns have maintain any association with him at all? He will reportedly be a team consultant for the remainder of 2016. Basically I'm calling bullshit on any "juicy" story.

I knew Shine box was nothing but trouble.

Jimmy falls for these bean counters that fancy themselves football guys in the same way Dan falls for first timers who have never performed the job he's hiring for at that level.

Amazing how guys so successful in their fields outside of sports manage to fall into the same hiring patterns time after time.

Hoping for something truly juicy. Sexual harassment is terrible but common place. I want something bizarre and horrible to befit the Browns' tradition of not only failing, but failing in the most spectacular and unlikely ways.

I'm hoping it involves the mysterious weekly appearance of a big turd, right there looking at you, in the middle of the break-room floor.

Best part is Alec wont be watching Hue's time making him watch tape with him.
