Browns Defense in 2023...

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
My biggest fear for this defense moving forward is that Joe Woods somehow gets another year.

Surely that can’t be the case… right?

Couple things might save Woods. One is obviously the team winning with Watson and the defense playing well during that time.

Another is if Woods has a lot of support in the building and someone like Berry basically says he fucked up putting the defense together and convinces Haslam he can fix it and Woods is the guy to make it happen.

I don’t find either of those things likely though .

At this point, Stefanski would be digging his own grave.

I’d prefer a non re-tread.

Curious, why do you say this?

I actually prefer a retread. Someone with a track record of calling a smart defensive game with some built up credibility and authority.

I believe our offense is going to be all-world next season. We truly just need a competent, opportunistic defense. I'd rather hire a guy who has proven that he can pilot an average to above average defense versus a splashy/flashy hot young hire who could be the next big thing or could fall flat on his face.

Stefanski doesn't seem to want to get overly involved with the defense or step on his defensive coordinator's toes/authority, so an established vet who doesn't require babysitting would be ideal.

Fangio, Zimmer, Schwartz, etc. Those types interest me.

My hope is that Stefanski is letting Woods hang himself with his own rope to strengthen the reasoning for his termination in the offseason. Also it would look good to potential experienced DCs during the offseason that our coaching staff gave this clown 3 full years and only made a change during the offseason.

To add to this you're likely to keep these type of guys who already had head coaching opportunities for a few years even if they do well. Some new hotshot DC that does well will be bolting for a HC opportunity ASAP.

Excluding "re-tread" vs. first time play callers is an incredibly limiting factor in a potential pool of candidates.

Why on Earth would any organization limit themselves based on that factor?

Makes absolutely no sense.

I am a fan of Mike Zimmer. I actually wanted us to hire him as our head coach back during our numerous head coaching searches.

If the Eagles are planning to part with Johnathan Gannon as their DC, I bet he would be the top choice. Zimmer just lost his son, to whom he tried to pass the coaching torch over. Wonder if he needs time to process that loss.

Do you consider Vic Fangio to be a re-tread? What about if someone like Wade Phillips was willing to be a DC again?

I think there are established, very, very good defensive coordinators--and that is the path we should go down. Going after young, unproven guys with a team that's ready to win a championship and a head coach who doesn't own that side of the ball isn't the path I want us to take.

If they can get a top guy who has proven it sure, but I'm not looking to go back down the unproven re-tread route like we did with Woods.

Give someone their first shot before doing that shit again.

Not sure why they'd be looking to part ways with Gannon when they're 5th in DVOA defense and 8-1.

Their fanbase mirrors the Browns fanbase aside from the raw metrics. We agree that a well run front office will not be swayed by an angry fanbase. He's likely not on a hot seat, but read a few Eagles articles. Philly gotta Philly.
