Browns free agency watch/rumor thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Per Nate Ulrich:

#Browns have signed DE Auston English & LB Benjamin Jacobs to practice squad. Both had been waived by CLE on Sunday. #NFL

Both moves were expected and now fills the PS...

As far as Hicks goes: he's a versatile veteran who will provide a stop-gap for the time being... He's someone that Heckert is comfortable with from his days in Philly.. I'm sure the FO would have liked to seen Pinkston fill in but I don't think the coaching staff is 100% comfortable with a rookie starting at LG which is why they brought someone in like Hicks... If it was RG, it might be a different story... Some may ask why Greco or Cousins didn't get a chance to fill-in and both are valid but Greco seems like he's primed for the backup RT role and is waiting should Pashos falter... While Cousins is more of a developmental player and not ready for a significant contribution just yet... I don't think Hicks will be terrible but I don't think he's going to blow the doors off.. At the very least he'll be a very versatile OL (can play every position except C) and one should expect him to be kind of like Floyd Womack..

(EDIT)

His blocking stats per ProFootballFocus don't do him any favors... Let's hope he was better then he was in 2010 where he rated as the 61st best guard.... Womack was rated as the 72nd and Steinbach was 70th for comparison...

Glad we held on to English. I know it was just against 3rd stringers, but he was constantly beating his man and pressuring the QB. Really the only major standout I can think of from the 3rd string defense.

Something to keep an eye on:

#Browns made initial waiver claim on DT Marcus Harrison, who flunked his #Panthers physical. Could be headed to CLE now http://t.co/RGrWV7I

(from the link)

The Browns also put in an initial waiver claim, so perhaps they'll reenter the bidding. Harrison is probably out of shape; no particular injury is known. Long on potential, Harrison has been short on production his whole career.

Researching Harrison, looks like weight has been an issue which is why he likely flunked his physical... If the Browns are ok with his weight then we could see him in here and probably Scott Paxson cut... That would really help the DT depth...

From Chicago newspaper:

Harrison, a third-round pick in 2008, was a career disappointment after flashing potential as a rookie. He reported to camp this year overweight for the second time in three years and was not allowed to practice the first several days until he reduced his weight from 327 to 316.

After the preseason finale, Harrison seemed just as clueless in the locker room as he often did on the field.

“To be honest, it’s my best camp I’ve had since I’ve been here, although I got slowed down early so it was like being behind the 8-ball,” Harrison said after being a nonfactor on the defense for the last time. “Every game I’ve graded out good, except maybe last week. Practice has been good, so it’s all in the coaches’ hands. Whatever decision they make, they make it.”

Harrison was inactive for 11 games last season, had 1 tackle the entire season and sleepwalked through another training camp, so it was an easy decision to make.

(EDIT)

Looks like Harrison had a questionable knee according to the Panthers... Could this be like a Brodrick Bunkley deal in reverse happening here? lol

Ex-Bear Harrison fails physical with Panthers

Marcus Harrison could not pass his physical at the start of training camp for the Chicago Bears because he was out of shape.

Harrison's fresh start elsewhere was derailed Monday when the Carolina Panthers rejected him after he failed their physical because of a questionable knee.

The Panthers had placed a waiver claim for Harrison after he was let go in final cuts on Saturday. But a knee that was an issue before the Bears drafted him in the third round in 2008 from Arkansas didn't pass the test of Carolina's doctors and medical personnel.

It's possible Harrison will find a team that will pass him. The Cleveland Browns also put in a waiver claim for Harrison, but the Panthers sit atop the waiver wire because of their finish from last season.

Harrison could potentially come back to the Bears and maintain that he was injured when they released him. Harrison passed a physical to begin training camp after five days, and teams cannot just dump players who are injured.

But it's important to note that the 32 NFL teams will view medical situations differently.

Looks like the Browns indeed may make a move:

Browns are again interested in DT Marcus Harrison, formerly if the Bears. Panthers were awarded the DT through waivers, but failed physical.

I hope this happens because they really need DT depth..

What do you mean our OL does not look too good? Thomas and Mack are better than any 2 OL players on any other team I can think of and the rest of the line is average.

I would agree if you say our backups on our OL doesn't look too good, they got beat like a drum in the preseason. As long as Thomas and Mack don't go down along with Steinbach I think we'll be fine though. Nobody has top tier players at every line position.

Mack and Thomas are great, but that is the line. Lauvao is a complete question mark at this point. Pashos has been hurt the past 2 years. And our starting LG is going to be a guy that was just cut by the Eagles or Rams.

Wow, the Patriots cut 2009 2nd round pick CB Darius Butler today.. He'll go through waivers and hopefully he gets to the Browns and they claim him because that would be a nice signing..

Omg. Why would they cut him?

Darius Butler would be an awesome signing. Bring in as much youth as possible.

A guy that just got cut by the Pats would be an awesome signing? Am I missing something? Usually the Pats are right about their players.

Adding youth to a position that lacks depth

He's been mediocre at best, but he's young and talented. He could easily turn it around and be a player in this league. The pats have a lot of CB depth now that Bodden is healthy.

Belichick says all the time, you can never have enough pass rush or pass coverage. The Pats aren't super deep at corner, so I don't think they would release him unless they really thought poorly of him.

Wow, Jaguars cut ties garrard??? Wow it just gets better all the time.
