Browns "reboot" coaching search

I can't let them off the hook. The most attractive thing about the Browns is the young talent and near 50m in cap space. Even though I think it was completely ridiculous to get rid of Heckert, I understood if it meant they were getting a big-time coach. Now it doesn't seem likely that will happen. That means that Banner failed on two fronts. They said that Heckert would be evaluated on his record. He wasn't. He was pushed out the door because of ego. You don't clean out the guys that are good, guys that deserve to be around. They did it, we can't do anything about it, we have to live with it, but I'm going to call them out on what is now a complete fuck up. Anybody we got was going to be better than Shurmur. Not really likely to find a guy better than Heckert. Even if we do, there was no reason to risk it. I was fine with Banner when he had done nothing, now he's done something and I don't like it. Bottom line is that we're not in as good of a position as we were in and Banner is responsible. Time for Jimmy to pull up on the leash a bit.

How do we know that letting go of Heckert was a mistake when we don't know who his replacement will be, and how good that person will be at their job?

While Heckert made some great moves, it's not like we just fired Ozzie Newsome. He whiffed on QBs, and the most games we won on his watch was five games. Ultimately the front office is measured by the team's win/loss record.

A couple guys I like

John Cooper - Will go 14-2 every year.....losing 2x to the Steelers, then losing first playoff game

Marty Schottenheimer - Will build a team good enough to make the playoffs. After he does that, fire him, and bring in Gruden to finish it off.

How does everyone feel about the idea of bringing Pat Shurmur back?

He wouldn't come back. He's destined to go on to coach the next multi-championship dynasty.

I think we all know what time it is...

Who's got the best photo-shop skills in here?

Coaches who have succeeded in both the NFL and CFL is not very long and distinguished.

Bud Grant
Marv Levy

That's it.

Just starting to read thru this thread, and this may have already been brought up, but Bud and Marv left a lot of Lombardi trophies behind! 0 fer 8... yikes.

Edit: sorry, already mentioned a couple pages back, so now I will post a trivia question about coaches. Who was the first coach to make an appearance in 6 Super Bowls?

I know Tressel to Cleveland is not the most popular opinion here, but someone wrote a pretty decent article on it...

Among the highlights...

1. Conservative (in one sense) offense: Ohio State's offense under Jim Tressel generally wasn't too flashy, never was in the top 20 or 30 offenses in the country, but they were effective – a punishing running game (Mo C, NOT Lydell Ross, Antonio Pittman, Beanie, Boom Herron), a passing offense that was geared towards moving the chains but had a deceptively explosive component, and a quarterback that was asked to generally not lose the game rather than go out and win it (except Troy Smith in 2005 and '06, and maybe Terrelle Pryor for part of 2010). But they had a roster of playmakers that had a serious big play capability, usually from more than one position.

So how would that philosophy help the Browns?

1. The foundation has been laid for a powerful running game. In 2007 they drafted All-Pro LT Joe Thomas, in 2012 they drafted Mitchell Schwartz, who started all 16 games at RT. They also drafted a big, versatile back in Trent Richardson, who had a very good rookie season. Richardson seems like a prototypical Tresselball back – good enough to get tough yards between the tackles, but versatile enough to catch passes out of the backfield.

The Browns also went all in with QB Brandon Weeden, who had an up and down rookie year, but there's talent there, and an ability to be a good, serviceable NFL quarterback. And really, that's all Jim Tressel wants, and anything else is gravy.

Admittedly, I haven't watched a ton of Browns football this year, but when I saw him play, he reminds me of a guy that did very well in Jim Tressel's offense – Craig Krenzel, only with more natural talent. He's not as mobile, but he's got a much better arm. And given a few more weapons and better protection, Weeden could succeed in a Tressel offense.
