BALTIMORE, Md. -- Right-hander Carlos Carrasco will make his major-league debut for the Indians on Tuesday when he starts against Detroit at Comerica Park.
Carrasco, 22, was one of four players the Indians received from Philadelphia for Cliff Lee and Ben Francisco. Carrasco is 5-1 with a 3.19 ERA in six starts at Class AAA Columbus since the trade. In 42 1/3 innings, Carrasco has 36 strikeouts and the opposition is hitting .196 against him.
Overall, Carrasco is 10-11 with a 4.64 ERA in 26 starts at Columbus and Lehigh Valley. He has 148 strikeouts in 157 innings. The opposition is hitting .245.
Tuesday is the first day for expanded rosters and the Indians are taking advantage of it with Carrasco's promotion. Carrasco will take rookie left-hander David Huff's spot in the rotation. It's unclear if Huff is being shut down, but the Indians were concerned he was reaching his threshold in innings. They do not want him pitching more than 160 to 170 innings this year.
Huff has thrown 140 2/3 innings between Columbus and the Indians this year. He leads the Tribe rotation with eight victories.
If the Indians don't shut down Huff, they could go with a six-man rotation in September.
Baseball America named Carrasco as the second-best prospect in the Phillies organization before the trade. They also named him the 52nd best prospect in baseball.
"I saw him last Friday night," said John Mirabelli, Indians director of scouting. "He was aggressive. He touched 95 and was pitching at 92 mph to 94 mph in the seventh.
"It's the third time I've seen him in the last 12 months. I think he's made some strides. He showed consistency with his slider and pitched inside with his fastball.
"I was impressed. He's got four pitches. He's got the weapons. He looked pretty close to being a major-league ready pitcher."
