So... what about.....

J.R Smith?

Anyone?

Who are some of the successful examples of players coming back from an Achilles injury? Wondering in terms of the big $ for Matthews and also Varejao, etc.

Only player that comes to mind is Dominique Wilkins.. for mostly everybody else it's been a career ender or their production dropped off significantly

Achilles is pretty much the death nail in basketball players, much as Torn labrums end pitchers, and lisfranc fractures end football careers

There's just no good way to repair it and know it'll be 100% ever again

I hope Christmas is ready to go.

Lots of hope (or desperation or both) in those teams who are throwing huge offers at Matthews.

I believe Elton Brand signed that $80M contract with Philly after his Achilles injury. But despite the contract, he was never the same.

Dominique Wilkins is probably the most successful case.

The hope with Varejao -- at least my hope -- is his role is now significantly diminished and he won't be asked to play the minutes he had been.

Kobe also rushed back from his, which was dumb. It's an injury you don't rush back from, especially given his age.

But yeah, it's a tough injury to recover from, especially as you get older.

Only one I can think of is Dominique Wilkins in the early 90's

Rim-protectors in the league will always get paid. And, Robin Lopez is a good rim-protector. Great guy as well. So, shame about him playing with Knicks.

Didn't Nique come back from achilles injury and do well?

But, I agree $15 Million contract is risky considering the injury as there have been more players who have struggled and never been the same than have come back and be good. If Matthews didn't have that injury, he would have been easily worth that much, if not more. Was the best 3 & D guy in the league before the injury along with Danny Green.
