5 things to look for when the Cleveland Cavaliers host Macabbi Tel Aviv

...

4. The Tristan Thompson/Anderson Varejao watch

This battle will likely go the distance. These are two workhorses and all they know is to go hard and run through any brick walls placed before them. There are pros and cons to both of them starting at center. Varejao has the experience and size., but his best years are probably behind him. Thompson is a better rebounder and more athletic, but he's undersized and lacks experience in big games. This will not be settled anytime soon. Should be fun to watch.
...

I enjoy Chris Haynes and his writings, I really do. But this paragraph I posted above is a prime exemple why I still have some "issues" with Chris.
As of now, he just doesn't know our team that well, tbh. He uses empty phrases like "Varejao has the experience and size., but his best years are probably behind him" or "Thompson is a better rebounder...".
Both those arguments are unfounded. He just worte it to try to make a point:
"Player A can do this...but Player B is better at that..."
He probably only looked at the career average in rebounds and saw that Thompson had better numbers. Still, he is far from being the better rebounder right now.
And how does he come to the conclusion that Andy's best years are "probably behind him"? Yes, he is 32 years old and yes, he has a long injury history but he's far from done, especially if you consider that his new role for the team plays so much more to his strengths. Stastic-wise, his last 3 years were probably his best. So how can you go out and say this stuff? Why souldn't he be able to remain at this level IF injury free?
I'm sorry for this little rant, but that's just poor journalism in my eyes.
But whatever...

I hope for an entertaining game tomorrow night!

Anybody got an internet stream for the preseason game.

Probable Starters

Cleveland Cavaliers

C Tristan Thompson

F Kevin Love

F LeBron James

G Dion Waiters

G Kyrie Irving

Maccabi Tel Aviv

C Ben Altit

F Idan Zamanson

F Alex Tyus

G Jake Cohen

G Jeremy Pargo

I think it's extremely safe to say that a severely injury-prone 32 year old's best years are behind him.

I do agree re: Tristan though. If Tristan's a better rebounder, it's only because Andy's never on the floor to steal them.

Well, This is a funny starters list he got there for Maccabi.
Alex Tyus plays as Center for Maccabi, especially because Sofo ("Baby Shaq") didn't come to the USA trip.
Jake Cohen is a forward, he is 6"9. You don't see this type of height as a guard...
Idan Zamanson and Ben Altit are kids who don't play any significant minutes if at all - starters? well think of it as Kirk and Harris starting...
So whoever gave Chris Haynes this "Probable Starters" list is obviously right now on the floor laughing out loud.

And this is my probable starters for Maccabi:

C Alex Tyus - had a great season last year, didn't start this preseason very well, he is only 6"7 but very athletic.
In Europe his athleticism is an advantage, vs the Cavs he won't have a chance as a Center. Maybe he will give some work to AV.

PF Jake Cohen / Guy Pnini - The starting 4 is injured so the coach might play Pnini as 4, even though he is a 3. Guy is a passionate player, the team's captain, who is a good 3 point shooter. Jake has the height but he is a soft player.

F Nate Linhart / Guy Pnini - Both players are 3 point shooters

SG Sylvan Landsberg - a good player, when he gets hot he becomes very efficient from all ranges, but sometimes he disappears... Blatt didn't give him a lot of minutes last year, but now Guy Goodes, the new head coach give him more credit and so far he is doing pretty good job in the preseason.

PG Jeremy Pargo - Maccabi's best player and the one who is in the best shape. on Maccabi's last game vs the Brazilian club Flamengo he had a great game with 28 pts 7 assists and 6 rebounds, but Maccabi lost that game. This game is probably the best practice for Kyrie to work on his defense. Because right now only Pargo is NBA calibar player on Maccabi's roster.

My prediction: Cavs win by 35 points.
I love Maccabi but they don't have a chance, especially in this shape, with this roster. And especially - without Blatt.

Nice rundown for people who don't have a clue about them like me.

I have different things whether this game is on nba tv anyone know for sure?

My all time favorite player - class act on and off the court.
I know that his prime years in the NBA where for a different team but still he was such a great player!

Hi guys.

been lurking since blatt was signed as coach.
yes - another "new fan" from israel...
(well, if i'm being honest - first and formost a laker fan, but I still want the cavs to win any other game...).

so anyway, been wanting to say this for some time - you have a great group of guys over here. not my first basketball forum, but this one seems to be really cool in terms of how nice the posters are in general and to one another in particular.

so finaly decided to step out into the light today in honor of the game.
as was already said - shouldn't really be that close. maccabi is in a bad spot in terms of roster, injuries, chemistry, etc.
there will probably be some jeremy pargo highlights which you guys are familiar with, and not sure about much more than that for maccabi.

regarding starting lineup, the maccabi lineup would probably be -

pargo
marquez haynes
devin smith
bryan randle (great defender and BBIQ and a guy who I think had nba potential - might be a little old now)
alex tyus

the most interesting point to make here is about tyus.

he was the team's best big man last season - even though he came off the bench for big sofo.
he played more minutes, and was on the floor when it counted...
sofo was more of a "start him out, see what you can get out of him tonight" kinda guy.

with tyus, his athletic ability and defense - you knew you'd have it every single night, despite him being undersized for the position (not sure he is 6'7 as was said here - i think he's close to 6'9, but still undersized).

so anyway, why is the point about tyus interesting and relevant ?

because I think it's blatt's success with tyus at the center position which makes him a believer in tristian thompson playing center.

trying to compare the two, I think tyus is probably a little better shot blocker, but other than that - I think you can definitely see the similarities in athletic abiltiy, physicality, high energy and the ability to finish at the rim (and above the rim).

so I just thought this was a point worth making, and possibly "proof" of sorts that blatt's system can work well with what TT brings to the table at the center position - despite his obvious and literal shortcomings...

should be fun tonight.
shouldn't really be close imo, but fun none the less.
