Cleveland Browns New Head Coach Search, 2014

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
They hired Pettine almost immediately after Gase dropped out.

The only thing remotely similar to an ultimatum was Pettine telling people during his press conference that the wait caused him to "Almost get to that point."

But nothing was ever remotely reported about Pettine giving them a deadline.

Essentially, the Browns got at LEAST their third choice for this position. Whether that's a good thing or not remains to be seen, but you trying to spin the process as anything other than a clusterfuck has been pretty bad thus far.

It was a clusterfuck, we'll see if it works out though.

Third choice? Gase and...?

Call it what you want but I am happy with the outcome of it, I prefer actually going through an interviewing process with numerous candidates as opposed to what they did with Lombardi (Clearly have him in mind then go through some bullshit interviews to satisfy the Rooney Rule and hire him)

I would have been content with Gase or Quinn also, much more Quinn after that Superbowl but I feel like we got a solid hire anyway.

See, what's been pretty ugly to me is your "I'm in the PR business and I KNOW (fill in with whatever it is you're an expert on at the time)."

Again, you sound just like the entitled Beachwood/Orange kids my age who think they know everything without any real confirmation. Nobody likes those people.

I'm apparently trying to cover-up a clusterfuck by not jumping to conclusions from agent fed stories. I just can't do it.

McDaniels

Not sure what has given you that impression.

But, I have yet to hear a reasonable explanation as to why this situation wasn't a clusterfuck.

Every story that doesn't fit your narrative is an agent fed one, but within minutes of a positive vibe comes from Berea you immediately become the snarky kid from Beachwood who thinks he knows everything without any real confirmation.

But you're probably right, those agent fed stories about confirmed interviews were all just bullshit. No doubt Pettine was their number one guy!

Because I KNOW they interviewed him right as his season ended, right?

McDaniels

Just like you shall choose to believe McDaniels turned the job down, I will continue to believe that the Browns told McDaniels they were going to keep interviewing other people.

Neither of us shall ever know who is right. Yay conflicting reports.

And the Patriots beat guy reported a last minute effort to reestablish contact before they hired Pettine.

Or that Pettine was an afterthought and came weeks after the Browns interviewed McDaniels.

He was higher on their priority list, pretty safe to say we can be certain about that.

You'd have more of a leg to stand on if the Browns didn't reach out to McDaniels after Gase pulled out and asked him to reconsider the position. McDaniels had to turn them down twice before they signed off on Pettine. The argument is pointless now though. Pettine has the job, it's his to lose. There's no way to know at this point which candidate would be the most successful, and personally I'm in the anyone but McDaniels camp so I'm not upset about the way things turned out.

I didn't think much of the last minute effort personally but I will give you that he came weeks after. McDaniels is poop anyway so I am glad it worked out that way.

I'm not arguing the end result for sure.

As I said at the time, getting a young offensive mind like KS is exactly what I wanted, so it softens the blow somewhat for me.

I like Pettine's attitude and credentials, but I think it's impossible to make an argument that this situation was handled well by the front office. It sure looked thrown together with little direction an even less results results in getting the candidates that they initially wanted.

It's no secret that Pettine wasn't their top guy. They wanted to interview Gase, I think that was well covered. They did interview Quinn, along with several others as well. I'm not calling it a clusterfuck because I'm not sure whether their intent was to offer the job early or not.. Most importantly, though, I just know that I don't know what is really going on.

What I keep hitting on is that you really can't know exactly what is going on/what happened nor do (or I) you know what their intent was. It seems like you do think that you know, though.

We can't be sure Pettine wasn't their top guy, given all those reports are agent fed bullshit.

Nobody really knows anything.

Not sure if this is new news.

Haslam admitted that while Farmer wasn't in on the interviews, they had his input through the search.

As far as the names, it doesn't seem like Malzahn was even an option, and Stoops said this during the search in regards to coaching in the NFL:

"..So right now, it's not something I'm looking to pursue, but you never know down the road."

Is this believable or is it crap? McDaniels wasn't begged for anything...

Within about 24 hours after McDaniels pulled out of the search, he called to get back in, sources close to the situation told cleveland.com. This was contrary to a report on NFL Network that the Browns called McDaniels and tried to lure him back into the mix.

McDaniels was likely the "mystery finalist'' the Browns referred to on the day Pettine was hired, although they later said it was Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, who also hadn't yet been eliminated until Pettine agreed to terms.
