Cleveland Browns Select Baylor WR Josh Gordon

Gordon looks toward the future

Josh Gordon has worked to put his dropped pass at Indianapolis in the rearview mirror and is focused on Sunday’s game against the San Diego Chargers.

First-year Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon had a breakout performance with a two-catch, two-touchdown game at the New York Giants on Oct. 7 and continued with a career-best 99-yard, one-touchdown effort in a 34-24 win over the Cincinnati Bengals the following Sunday.

Gordon caught two passes for 59 yards and one touchdown in last week’s loss to the Indianapolis Colts, but dropped a pass in the end zone that would have put the Browns in the lead midway through the fourth quarter.

After watching the replays of the play, Gordon said he takes motivation from the missed opportunity.

“For something like that, I feel as though I can only build on it,” Gordon said. “It’s a learning experience. Everything won’t always happen as smoothly as you want it be, especially in my first year. I expected, in my career, for there to be a drastic down point, so the fact that it came early is all the better. Hopefully, we can stay away from it for the rest of the year.”

After spending his first month as an NFL player learning the team’s West Coast offense and adjusting to the professional lifestyle, Gordon has been one of Weeden’s favorite targets. Gordon leads the team with 333 receiving yards and four touchdown catches.

“He’s shown me that he’s got a chance to be a pretty darn good player,” Shurmur said. “All eyes were on him and we were expecting him to be great from day one. There’s a mental component to that and to his credit, he’s pushed through a lot of that. I’ve seen him practice better because he’s in better shape. I’ve seen him listen to us. He knows where to get lined up. His functional intelligence is good. I’ve seen all that. Now, we’ll just see how far he goes with it.”

Gordon has been on the receiving end of three of the Browns’ longest touchdowns this year. In the last three games, Gordon has caught touchdown passes of 62, 71 and 33 yards, respectively. All of the passes came from quarterback Brandon Weeden and two rank in the top five as the longest touchdown passes from a Browns rookie quarterback.

“I want to really keep that a part of our team,” Gordon said of the deep ball. “I definitely like the big-play, downfield passes for us. They help us out a great deal. It’s just really exciting, one of the most exciting parts of football to see big plays happen like that. I definitely enjoy it.

“It really just starts at practice. If it works in practice, it carries over to the game. In a situation like that last game, it worked for us. I was pretty wide open, but each defense is different. Different cornerbacks have different techniques to scheme against you. Really, it’s just the best man will win, depending on who wants it bad enough. That’s how I approach each snap and each pass play.”

What did Julio Jones do his first year?

Julio got injured about halfway through the season and missed 3 games.

This is true. What is also true is that Julio was catching balls from an established stud QB in Matt Ryan and was lining up alongside Tony Gonzalez and Roddy White who took a ton of pressure off of him.

Basically Josh Gordon has been an absolute home run thus far. Hopefully he can do this consistently and can start getting more involved in the intermediate length passing game instead of solely relying on deep balls.

bump Mr.Gordon 's thread.

Love the progression. Les hope he is our number 1 for the next 7-10 years!

He's definitely exceeding expectations. He's arguably the best rookie WR.

Josh Gordon: 646 Yards, 5 TDS
Justin Blackmon: 557 Yards, 3 TDS
Kendall Wright: 514 Yards, 4 TDS

Not even sure if the others are worth mentioning.

He's no Aldrick Robinson

I love what Gordon has done so far, but damn, the only time this kid is making a catch is when he runs a straight streak down the field. He really needs to work on his route running in the offseason. Guy needs to get better at getting open on those short-intermediate routes.

All but one of his catches came on underneath and intermediate routes this past Sunday.

24 of his catches have been for less than 20 yards down the field, as opposed to four of 20 yards or more.

I'd imagine that number would be better if his QB was consistently accurate inside of 20 yards.

Well that's just blatantly false considering all 5 of his TD's have been on plays of 20 yards or more. :weirdo:

Gordon actually has 12 of 20 yards or longer. 12/34 which would be about 35% of all of his catches.
