Cuyahoga County Sin Tax

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
"Don't tax you, don't tax me, tax that fellow behind the tree!"

I would vote it down. Cutting Ohio's government is a priority. The stadium will get paid for but other things like buying 42 million of Israel bonds will come to an end. The idea that the stadium won't get paid for and the team will leave is nonsense. It will put the city in a position to cut an already bloated government freeing up the city to prosper.

What an asanine statement. You have problems with a bloated government in Ohio, so you want to cut the direct funding to Cleveland's biggest attractions? All in hopes it will indirectly solve the problems you have?

This is beyond short sighted. If you think corrupt officials and politicians gaming the system are going to stop being corrupt and gaming the system because of funding cuts to an unrelated budget... You're beyond stupid. All your doing is passive agressively creating a new problem instead of solving yours.

You have a problem with over spending on terrible projects? Well attack those projects... Don't let the legitimate ones suffer. You have a problem with bad politicians? Well start actively supporting politicians you want to represent you. Pass out fliers, get the people you want voted into positions of power.

Oh I forgot, that would require time and effort on your part. It s much easier to just be lazy and oppose this tax... I'm sure all the misappropriated money will magically be appropriated in the way that you want because you voted against funding for something completely unrelated to what you consider an issue. There's no way that could backfire...

sell the stadiums to the highest bidder

The tax revenue is already there for the buildings. The government is the addict and sin taxes are their drug of choice. The building is a bad investment . Gilbert doesn't want to pay for it. The government doesn't want to pay for it. The citizens don't need more taxes. They've had the sin tax for 25 years. It does not work. The citizens already get less than they deserve out of the taxes. The value proposition is upside down. No!

Further fattening a political elite that has a history of deceit does not amount to more revenue and trust.

Preying on fear of abandonment while ripping the tax payers ass hole does not sit well with me either.

This statement is full of so many misconceptions I don't know where to start....

Really the only point I'll reiterate is cutting funding to the main source of attraction downtown is a bad business model. You want the city to prosper? Then having things to do downtown is the avenue to go.

Please explain to me why the sin tax doesn't work? Explain how replacing the sin tax revenue being replaced with general funding from the City gov is a smart move rather than that money going towards oh I don't know fixing the roads or towards schools is a good idea.

You could argue that the sin tax money should go towards those very things but as someone said earlier you have to pay to play and the sin tax is a feature that makes it attractive for owners to keep the sports franchises here. The benefits the stadiums bring to the city far outweigh the potential costs.

I would just like to hear your solution to this please.

THIS IS NOT A TAX INCREASE IF YOU DISLIKE IT BUY CIGARETTES AND BOOZE IN ANOTHER COUNTY.

Ohio's government is a billion dollar business. It means very little to lose 10 million dollars in tax revenue. This isn't hurting the schools or the roads to vote down the sin tax.

If you add an expense you need to cut an expense. It doesn't make sense to keep the sin tax and go deeper into debt for a tax payer.

You are aware there is a difference between the levels of government right? Ohio's government and the City Government are different animals. Saying that 10 million dollars in tax revenue means very little is asinine. Ask the Cleveland City Schools, I am sure they would love to have that revenue.

If you are going to made at anything, be mad at the terms of the leases the city signed which obligate us to finance repairs.

Fitzgerald put it best “As flawed as the sin tax may be, at least the revenue from the sin tax is not where we are cutting human services to fund the upkeep of these stadiums,” FitzGerald said.

Bottom line, if we cut the sin tax then other government operations will suffer to make up for the loss in revenue which is something the City cannot afford.

How does raising revenue push us further into debt?
