DeAndre Liggins Waived

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Maybe his expendable nature could bring us another (better) wing.

Why is Shumpert expendable? I don't get all of this negativity towards Shumpert, like hes been playing like crap?

Dude is shooting 49% from the field, 45% from 3PT, Hes top 10 in 3PT shooting and he's a good defender, What more can you ask from a wing that plays next to LeBron, Kyrie Irving & Kevin Love?

If we can get a Rudy Gay for him, would you do it?

If we're basing this solely off matchups with the Warriors(as most do), I'm not sure I would. While Gay can certainly help score and matchup against Durant, Iggy, and maybe even Draymond, I don't think he can run around and defend well enough against Curry and Klay, leaving just Kyrie and JR to do that(unless you think Liggins is ready for that type of stage and assignment)

I couldnt agree more. The Shumpert hate on this board really surprises me. I really don't know what more people want from Shump than playing good defense, shooting an absurd 45% from 3, and doing an adequate job as the backup point when he's been required to. I'm actually really high on Liggins but I don't think he's been better than Shumpert.

He has sealed up the perimeter. How often are you seeing TT out of position now? Hardly at all. It is really impressive what Liggins has done. His ability to recover is probably the best on the team and his length is very good.

I watched the last 3 games yesterday with my eyes glued to Liggins. He is really special defensively no doubt about it. He has a good basketball pedigree and an outstanding ability to shut down perimeter players. He isn't a late bloomer who suddenly got good, he has been working on defense for years and it has paid off.

Totally agree that he looks better than Shump, and the starting unit needed his D so bad. I dont think Shump is expendable at all.

Yesterday against the heat the defense was so much better with him guarding the ball handler because he denied the pnr action and he closed the passing lanes with his quick recovery and length.
Then, Spoelsta did a smart thing and he quickly subbed Tyler Johnson in so the Heat played with two ball handlers. They generated better looks because Kyrie had to guard the PnR.
Heat looked good for a few minutes and then the Cavs just shifted gears.

It was the first in I don't know how long that I enjoyed watching the Cavs on the other end of the court.

Since Liggins' insertion into the starting lineup (Liggins/Kyrie/LBJ/Love/TT):

  • 46 minutes
  • 150 ORTG
  • 91.9 DRTG
  • +58.1 per 100 possessions, the best starting lineup in the NBA
His defense allows for more transitions after stops and gives the team three good defenders in the lineup and one (Love) who ends possessions with DRebs. The best we looked in preseason was when Liggins played next to Lebron right at the beginning of the year.

This cannot be sustained, but if Love and Kyrie continue to be the offensive juggernauts they have shown themselves to be, this starting lineup might not reach the crazy highs as it would with JR making 3 or 4 threes in a quarter, but overall, it can build leads more consistently.

We'll have to see how he'll do when teams get enough film and make adjustments so don't want to get too hyped up but:

Results are promising on offense as he showed willingness to attack the basket and finish if pushed out from the 3 point line (big deal obviously as this could be the difference between a bench and a starting role for him). He also is willing to move off the ball.

Overall, his size and quickness is impressive on both ends: he's got the size to finish inside and to contest multiple positions on D.

I hope teams do make adjustments to him/pay attention to him more...will mean better looks and opportunities for everyone else on the floor with him.

He pick and chooses his spots really well, which is good considering who he is playing the majority of his minutes with...but if he continues to do that, continues to make his wide open 3s, and continues to attack when teams close out on him hard, he can open up things for others on offense, which allows his defense to play more.

Curious to see what they do with him when JR comes back...part of me wants them to just stick with him in the starting lineup and see if JR can get it going off the bench and help the bench production.

Love what we're seeing from Liggins and the stats @priceFTW posted back that up, but lets not forget that 2 of his 3 games in the main rotation have been against the Knicks(bad team, bad ball movement) and a Heat team that dressed 8 players last night.

Excited to see how his role continues to develop though.
