Dwight Powell - F/C (signed)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Hopefully he turns it around, but so far it looks like I was way wrong on him. Guess that's what I get for going off of highlights and numbers lol

I know it's only Summer League ball but Powell has looked like absolute trash on both ends of the court.

He is not ready for NBA minutes. Honestly, since we are trying to win a title now, I would tell him to go to Europe and keep his rights, or give him an invitation to Canton. I would not sign him, but I am intrigued enough to keep his rights. He is not an NBA player this year. He needs a ton of development, and we need to maximize all 15 spots this season!

He was the 45th pick in the draft. Most of the time that guy doesn't pan out. Just be happy we got a great trade asset along with him.

Part of me is thinking that Haywood was the real target of that trade.

Definitely. The only free agent centers out there right now I'd take over Haywood at 2.2 million a year are O'Neal and Okafor, but both of those guys are just as over the hill and just as big an injury risk. So after you get a competent year of backup defensive center play (provided he is healthy) the Cavaliers flip him along with a draft pick as a trade piece for a solid player who make 10 million or less.

I would say that's a given. The team knew they would likely be over or at the cap next year, and having a ten million non-guaranteed contract is never a bad thing.

His college numbers were bad.

Anyway, he was much better tonight against Miami, whose team was bad but who trotted out a couple of pretty athletic front court players.

CLEVELAND, OH – The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed forward Dwight Powell, the 45th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, Cavaliers General Manager David Griffin announced today from Cleveland Clinic Courts. Per league policy, terms of the contract were not released.

Powell played four years at Stanford, appearing in 136 games (105 starts) with averages of 10.8 points and 6.3 rebounds in 26.2 minutes per game. The 6-11, 240-pound forward from Ontario, Canada is a two-time First Team All-Pac 12 selection. He averaged 14.0 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.3 steals during his senior season and was the Pac 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Powell also played for Canada in the World University Games in the summer of 2013.

During the 2014 Samsung NBA Summer in Las Vegas, Powell appeared in three games (one start) for the Cavaliers and averaged 5.0 points and 3.7 rebounds in 11.3 minutes per game. He was originally acquired along with center Brendan Haywood in a trade with the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for guard Scotty Hopson and cash considerations on July 12, 2014.

(I went back like 10 pages looking for this thread... but you must've bumped it RIGHT before I started going back)

Well he cant look any worse than he did in Summer League. Hopefully a year in Canton helps him out.

Here is what I got for the depth chart (bolded players have significant guaranteed salary):--
  • PG: Kyrie Irving / Dellavedova / John Lucas III
  • SG: Dion Waiters / Mike Miller / Joe Harris
  • SF: Lebron James / Shawn Marion / James Jones
  • PF: Kevin Love / Tristan Thompson / Malcolm Thomas / Dwight Powell
  • C: Anderson Varejao / Brendan Haywood / Alex Kirk / Erik Murphy
Some might slide Miller, Harris, Marion and Thompson down a position, but I'm not sure that makes a big difference.

Baring any trades, looks like the training camp challenges are going to be:
  • Malcolm Thomas vs Dwight Powell
  • Alex Kirk vs. Erik Murphy
John Lucas III might get bumped for Ray Allen if he signs with the Cavs, but that's looking less likely these days.
