IT/JR/BRON/Love are guaranteed starters.

Why should J.R. be considered a guaranteeed starter? He shot less than 35% from the field last year, and his DBPM declined for the second year in a row. And it's declining this year even further.

I think some people are seeing the JR they want to see rather than the one who is actually on the court.

Aka the ones who tried convincing themselves that JR was worth 14/year.

Just seeing that typed out gives me brain freeze.

I'm not saying that JR is definitely washed up. I'm just saying that him being a guaranteed starter is ignoring the possibility that he's declining. There are legitimate questions/concerns about him.

His overall FG% is meaningless to me because of the volume of threes. 35% was a down year for JR, but he missed training camp, battled injuries throughout the year, and was dealing with the extreme premature birth of his daughter. JR gets a legitimate pass for last years regular season, IMO.

We saw in the finals that JR was still the only guy besides LBJ and Kyrie that could buy a bucket.

This year he started out abysmally(so did the whole team pretty much). But he’s also been really coming around the last couple of weeks, last night notwithstanding. A few days ago there was a stat that he was shooting almost 44% from 3 in his last 5-7 games.

As for the regular season defensive stats...they are always going to look worse than they should for this team because of the attitude we take towards the regular season.

He’s also been dealing with extremely suboptimal back-Court partners all year. We jerked him around from starting to the bench and now back to starting again. He’s still trying to find his footing/groove and has been pretty good for most of the last 2-3 weeks.

IT coming back will be a help for JR offensively and we’ll see his percentage creep up from where it is now. JR is going to be just fine. And we also know we can count on him when it matters most which is super important.

Yea I'm with you. He looks so very done on the defensive end. The two way guard that we had for a year hasn't been seen in a long time.

JR's raw FG% doesn't matter as much as it's impacted by the number of 3s he takes, but his TS% absolutely matters since JR's job is to knock down shots. A sub .500 TS% (league average is .553) is a pretty big tell that he's not performing at an acceptable level.

His defense in the playoffs last year was lousy. Does he get a pass for that too?

His shooting is not my concern. I am concerned about his defense. Is he going to be the same guy defensively in the 2018 playoffs that he was in the 2016 playoffs?

As for the regular season defensive stats...they are always going to look worse than they should for this team because of the attitude we take towards the regular season.

If they were all young guys for whom age wasn't a factor...sure, it would be reasonable to assume that they can always be relied upon to turn it on and off each year.

The problem is that for older guys, the "regular season doesn't count" argument can conceal an actual decline in physical ability. So when the playoffs come and you're expecting the magical transformation to "playoff defensive intensity", it doesn't happen as expected.

He’s also been dealing with extremely suboptimal back-Court partners all year. We jerked him around from starting to the bench and now back to starting again. He’s still trying to find his footing/groove and has been pretty good for most of the last 2-3 weeks.

You're basically making excuses for him, and assuming that the underlying defensive ability will still be there in June, even though it's been a year and a half since we have actually seen him able to sustain that. You may be right, the excuses may all be valid, and the good defensive version of J.R. may show up in the playoffs.

But my point is - how do you know that to be the case? How can you be so sure he's going to be able to give us the plus defensive presence on the perimeter that we need?

If you're remotely unbiased, you have to at least consider the possibility that age is a factor. But right now, you're just waiving that away that possibility.

JRs peak on the defensive end was when he was going up against wings for the majority of his minutes, same with Shump. They have both been asked to guard PGs ever since Delly left. It's the problem with this team currently and for the past year, alot of guys are being asked to defend out of their natural position.

In 2015, we could guard any combination at a high level with the defensive depth we had. Now a big center and/or quick PG will give us trouble. Even a combo guard at SG will give us trouble now. We are built to guard true SGs to stretch PFs.

Whaaaaa???

That can't be right? Everyone knows Lue doesn't run plays and sets, he just lets Lebron ISO on every play. Just ask all the people who have Lue avatars, they'll tell you.

Fake BB analysis!

I've been saying this all season. The Cavs are really running some cool stuff on offense this year.

That’s when they actually run some plays. They only seem to do that when Korver is in or out of timeouts. Other than that it’s lebron pounding the ball. It’s one of the reasons I believe that we have a positive on off with him off the floor.

We will see once we get some PG back, but I wonder if lack on ball handlers at that position is part of the issue.

TS% figures in FT. JR doesn't attack the rim at a high rate so he doesn't get as many free throw attempts as the average guard. Its definitely going to effect his TS%

He takes 0.6 FT attempts per game and relies on 3pt shooting as his main production. His eFG% his first 2 years here is 55% and 53%

Last year it was almost 48% and considering all he went through it's understandable. This year It's to early in the season to hit the panic button. He's been good of recent and I would expect his shooting percentages will average out as we move forward
