Farewell to Sergey Karasev

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: #19: Sergey Karasev

Oh man, there's so many unintentional gems in this interview from the Nike Hoops Summit, most notably Sergey's use of the word 'teach' when he means 'learn'
There's also a nice play near the end where he defends Wiggins in practice and maintains good footwork the whole time, not biting on any head fakes or crossovers, and forces a contested miss.

Re: #19: Sergey Karasev

I was thrilled to see this guy drop and even more thrilled to see the Cavs pick him. My comment going into the draft was "I can get behind Grant's decision at 1, whoever it may be. I just really hope they find a way to get Karasev". I see this guy as a lock to be a contributor and have a chance at being an all-star.

I was thrilled to see this guy hitting shots with his eyes closed, and hitting them while not even looking at the hoop.

Also thrilled to hear Sergey say that he shoots 600-700 shots per day.

I'm really super excited about this guy's potential. He's the son of a coach, so he's going to be a heady player. He makes some awesome passes too!

Thanks again Ramon Sessions!

You just landed us our own version of Toni Kukoc/Manu Ginobili.

Absolutely for free. You were going to walk out on the Cavs, and you also walked out on the Lakers, who gift wrapped us two draft picks!

Have fun on your new team assembled by Michael Jordan!

I still remember Hollinger bashing is for that trade. Hard not to see it as an outright fleecing now. I guess Hollinger is the guy that just gave the Cavs a lotto pick for no reason last season, though. It wasn't like they needed to get under cap if they were going to trade Rudy Gay.

He bashed the Cavs largely because the 2013 pick issue was initially misreported (presumably by ESPN)....the way it was reported was that the Lakers had the right to swap picks in 2013, not the Cavs. He also didn't like the fact the Cavs took on Walton's contract, but it seems Walton ended up having a positive impact on last year's team, and having his contract on the team doesn't seem to have had a negative impact on the team's strategic posture last year (that is, it didn't prevent them from making any deals that would have involved taking on more salary).

What I find most amusing from that trade is that despite Speights' being historically a >15 PER player, Hollinger was willing to give up a future pick just to get rid of him. Does that reveal what Hollinger really thinks of PER?

Re: #19: Sergey Karasev

It's hard to believe he was there at 19 after doing a lot of research on him. He's still only 19 and has been a pro for several seasons. Last season he was his teams 1st or 2nd scoring option in one of the better leagues in Europe. I know he has defensive issues, most young players do. The NBA is littered with solid players that can't defend 1 on 1 very well, so what is the catch with him?

It's just his quickness and strength people are worried about.

He ranked 7th in the Eurocup for PPG (2nd on team), 6th in scoring in the VTB United League (1st on team), and led entire the Russian Professional Basketball League in scoring this year (the guy in second was almost 3 points behind him).

Yeah I know, but at 19 that's probably a question for a lot of players. He'll likely be a defensive liability but hopefully Mike Brown can help him get better there.

Re: #19: Sergey Karasev

From most reports, any defensive struggles did not come from lack of effort. I'm sure he'll put in the work to improve. His interviews suggest a desire to be great.

This is great to hear. So many times, the young European guys flash potential at the camps and Nike Hoop Summit, but are 15 mpg or less guys on their actual league teams. To see Sergey play such a large role against grown men, is a good sign of what type of mindset and mental fortitude he has, on top of the talent.

His youth combined with his mature play hopefully means he has a lot of upside. I look at him on the court, and it seems like he will be able to contribute right away. He says he wants to be great, or at least better than Kirilenko. I think he will put in the work. He wants to be the best Russian to play in the NBA.

Re: #19: Sergey Karasev

Does anyone think of Michael Redd when they see that shot? Left handed, high set and release
