Re: Tyler Zeller: CHOCOLATE SNOW !!!

Its important that the cavs dont hold on to zeller for too long. He will have value around the league for the next few years as people will think that he can learn to be tough. He must be part of any big time deal the cavs make in the near future. Although he is a 'good jumpshooter' he never seems to score them, such a flat shot

Tyler Zeller had a rough rookie season. He was drafted to be a longterm backup center and many expected him to have a nice, productive career. But the Cleveland Cavaliers' season quickly went off the rails when Anderson Varejao suffered a season ending injury and Zeller was thrust into an entirely different role. Rather than playing 15 minutes per game as a backup center, Zeller became a starting center in the NBA.

....
I would argue that if last season taught us anything, it's that the development on Tyler Zeller is actually a pretty important part of the Cavaliers' future

For your offseason reading enjoyment:

Zeller may or may bnot be a future perennial backup. Scotts plan was to move Zeller into the starting lineup and use Anderson V in his tradional back up 4/5 role. I have not heard anyone report Chris Grant ever say that Zeller was drafted with the intention to never start him.

Re: Tyler Zeller: CHOCOLATE SNOW !!!

I feel like a broken record, but I think Mike Brown will be able to get a lot out of Zeller. For one, everyone should benefit from playing in an actual defensive system. The hockey assist will be back in action, and I expect Brown to push the pace off of turnovers with bigs willing to run being the recipient of some easy finishes.

Re: Tyler Zeller: CHOCOLATE SNOW !!!

Tyler is up to 260 lbs now .. that's quite a bit more weight than he carried last year. But, the question will be whether the issue was as much weight related as it was toughness related.

More to love?

The added weight will help, but only marginally if his attitude on the court doesn't have a major change. Hopefully not being a rookie anymore will add some confidence.

Re: Tyler Zeller: CHOCOLATE SNOW !!!

260lbs.? Maybe we will luck out and he will turn into Chris Kaman 2.0.

Re: Tyler Zeller: CHOCOLATE SNOW !!!

I think we all should keep a very open mind about Zeller and him being able to become a long time starter. This league likes to kick your butt at times and he certainly took his lumps last year. He also showed some of the reasons why he could be successful long term.

He's got some upside but of course he's got to be able to shed that soft demeanor and play with a bit more grit. I don't know if he's got it in him but him gaining strength is at least a positive step in standing his ground. The best thing potentially about this year? There might not be a ton of pressure to perform and that could help him...

Re: Tyler Zeller: CHOCOLATE SNOW !!!

You dont develop toughness.

If getting up to 260 takes away some of his potential to be a faceup big who is agile, this will hurt him.

Re: Tyler Zeller: CHOCOLATE SNOW !!!

PD ran this article today about Zeller and his weight gain:

The money shot is this middle section:

But after a bout of flu near the end of last season caused the 7-footer to lose about eight pounds and left his weight at 238, he spent the first three weeks of his vacation eating anything he wanted.

In spite of his high metabolism, when he returned to Cleveland in late June, he was up 20 pounds, about eight pounds more than the 250 he played at most of his rookie season.

"I'm not going to say I was fat, but I felt very out of shape,'' Zeller said. "I had to transfer that into 'good' weight and muscle. Now I'm between 255-260, and I'm pretty happy with that, although I'm trying to gain more.''

That was the focus of the off-season for Zeller, who was pressed into service as the starting center when Anderson Varejao went down for the season with a quad injury and later a blood clot. Still learning the NBA game, Zeller was pushed around and beaten up by bigger, more experienced centers.

Zeller's problems last year had more to do with mentality than physical size, IMO.
