Future Trade Talk?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Portland have Dixon and Blake behind Telfair.

Luke for Jack may me a quite reasonable deal for both teams.

I'd do a Luke for Jack trade but I don't know if Portland would. I think they're pretty high on Jack. They also already have young wing players like their lottery pick this year Martell Webster, Travis Outlaw and our old favorite Daruis Miles. Dixon is really more of a SG too.

I can't see both Luke and Sasha being here when next season starts. One will be gone with Sasha being the more likely one. There just isn't a role or room for both of them. It might even make sense to hold onto them for the season and wait until the draft use one to package with the Cavs #1 pick to move up in the draft if there's a player they're high on.

Sasha and Ira to Boston for Marcus Banks and Mark Blount or just sasha to Toronto for the rights to Roko Ukic (young European PG drafted this year) No Brainer though I can't imagine why Boston would do this.

Cant see us trade Drew with the effort he has made. If we are still #3 in the league in point differential at the end of January, he will stay with the team (yes pay him the 60 million that Ty Chandler got). I see AV with more center minutes than PF minutes anyway.

If we are sucking wind at the end of January, I could see a gooden trade for a meatier power forward like Zach Randolph, or someone who will bang with the elton brands of the world. What we really need is the power forward equivalent to Bruce Bowen though, someone who can just shut down the scoring power forwards on the opposition (who is the next Ben Wallace?). Think about who those guys are, like Duncan, Nowitzki, Brand, Garnett, J Oniel and so on. I don't see it happening though..

paying 60 million to drew would be luxury tax suicide down the road. we can't afford to tie up so much money in a role player, albeit an important role player.

give gooden a huge contract like that and he might just get lazy. two nights ago chandler was held to zero points and five rebounds against the edy curry-less knicks. the bulls got outrebounded and lost. chandler has yet to prove that he was worth that near maximum contract.

Hey guys this is my first post here but im always on reading what you guys have to say....I was wondering what you guys would think about this senario... First we trade Luke back to his home in Portland for Jarrett Jack then we trade Eric Snow and Sasha Pavlovic to New York for Quentin Richardson. That makes our line up lke this

PG Damon Jones back up Jarett Jack
SG Larry Hughes back up Ira Newble
SF King James back up Quentin Richardson
PF Drew Gooden back up Donyell Marshall/ Anderson Varejao
C Big Z back up Alan Henderson/ Marty A

with the Jack trade we get the next Eric Snow except more athletic and with a better jumper. With the Q trade we can insert DJ in the starting lineup and still get the scoring punch off the bench from Q (plus Q seems unhappy in NY and hes not playing much) Then next year we can use our mid level on a big man as well as our 1.68 to maybe pick up Traylor if he can play again next year.

Just wondering what you gys thought and Im glad to be on the site and looking foreward to hearing your opinions

Q is really nothing more than a chucker. He sucked in Phoenix... only garnering attention because he was left wide open. His % was completely shoddy. But he always sat in the 4th quarters. And he's not cracking any minutes, at all, in NYK.

I am for obtaining Jarret Jack. Portland... I think they're looking to trade either Jack or Teflair. They signed Blake from Washington, so they'll have 3 PG's on the roster? I don't think so, they're just picking between JJ and ST to find who's going to be their starter, and trade to fill holes. With the departure of Patterson, I can see obtaining a backup wing player as a priority.

Welcome aboard George.
Interesting idea. Richardson would bring an experienced scorer off the bench and I don't think he fits with the Knicks right now. I know he signed a big contract with Phoenix before last season so taking on his salary could be a problem. That trade would weaken the Cavs at PG right now but they'd be getting a good young PG prospect in Jack.
I'm also not sure Richardson would be happy with limited playing time behind LeBron and Hughes. It's a good idea but I'm not sure I'd do it because of Q's salary and a possible problem with team chemistry. I would do the Luke/Jack trade.

CleveRocks,
I know Boston didn't pick up Banks option for next season so it looks like he doesn't have a future there. They might consider getting another young player with potential like Sasha rather than lose Banks for nothing. I also think acquiring Banks or Ukic look like the best choices from that list of names. Toronto is a mess so you might be able to get Ukic from them.

Nice idea but I'm not sure Gooden would land a quality, "meaty" PF in a deal. Guys like Randolph are currently paid the max and you'd have to give a lot to balance the trade out. But you're right, a heavier PF would be nice for the team. I'd like a bigger PF too but he'd have to be able to run the break and play at a fast pace. That's what I love about Gooden. He'll rebound and run the floor with our quicker players.

I doubt even more now that Portland would be interested in a Jackson for Jack trade. I forgot that Portland also has the 2 young Russian SF/SG's in Viktor Khryapa and Sergei Monia. Along with Webster, Outlaw and Miles that already gives them 5 young wing players and Dixon is also mostly a SG.
They really have no need for Luke and Telfair isn't a sure thing yet so I'm sure they want to keep Jack.

Narl makes a good point, they have enough young talent at sg/sf and pg. They should look for pf and center help.

I think Ferry should explore trading Gooden. For the simple fact you stated Karma. Some team and Gooden's agent will be looking for a lot of money. To me Gooden is not worthy of a $60 million dollar contract. It's all about money and years right now with Gooden and if Ferry and co feel comfortable paying Gooden. Options will be explored and there is nothing wrong with that.

Lyxo mentioned Gooden should take a $30 mill offer from us for 3 years and after that's up he'd be in his prime and ready for a max contract. While that is all good in theory for us, Gooden's game can deteriorate(sp) or get hurt. I just can't see how Gooden would turn down $60 mill from some team instead of taking $30. Granted it might be the hawks or a team like that. I'm un sure of how the cap looks next year for some teams but how can you turn down an extra $30 million now. granted this is all based on him getting this type of offer but you get the idea.

The only way he turns down the big offers: If he believes that the Cavs are something, that he feels comfortable here, and wants to finish what he started with the team that finally gave him a legit chance.

Gooden is durable. Never been hurt. I think that confidence in his resilience might affect his decision.

And I would be a bit hesitant to push for 3 year, 30 mil. Although, that would be a pretty fair price, I suppose. We'll see how negotiations go with him. Pretty much, his future will be in his hands.

I can see Gooden, being the nice and interesting guy he is, taking that type of deal. Just because he likes it here in Cleveland. That he knows that his predecessor pretty much bolted for more money and is sulking, in a seemingly promising situation. I bet he'll love the "hero" tag he'll get for sticking around, then making his big payday later on when he has a replacement in Varejao.

You guys are fantasizing about gooden taking a 30 million 3 year. Ain't happening. Eddy Curry got 60 million and he is terrible by comparison and could die at any moment. Lyxo is right about Gooden's intangibles, he has worked hard even in adverse team environments and he has been very durable and he has improved every year. There is no indicator that he will get lazy when he gets paid at all, unlike Kwame Brown, or Eddiy Curry. Ini fact the knocks on Gooden (he is not strong enough, he doesn't get defensive rotations) are exactly the aspects of his game most likely to improve over the next four years. At twenty four he still has time to bulk up, and he is getting defense under Mike Brown who is one of the best at teaching it.

I do not think we are in Salary Cap Hell at all with Gooden. We are over the cap from here out anyway. We can sign our own guy over the cap easier than we can sign an outside guy over the cap. If you consider teams like New York or Dallas, we are about half of what they spend. If we want to contend (and therefore keep Lebron) we will need to be in that league. It boils down to how well we do this year. If Gooden, James, Hughes and Z are enough to get us second round we should sign Gooden to a reasonable pay day. If not we look for the right fit, that we can sign and trade Gooden for.

CleveRocks is absolutely right. All of a sudden we're protecting Dan Gilbert's pocketbook even though, to my knowledge, he hasn't been waving red flags about his labor costs. Gooden is an asset, and Gilbert is too good a businessman to simply write off an asset for an artificial reason like the salary cap. If he's after the big enchilada, which I think he is, then he'll go over the salary cap to do it. That's not to say that he'd sign Gooden to a crazy contract, just that not every decisioni on personnel is going to be dictated by the luxury tax. That may be the case in some franchises, but not this one at this time. (As evidence, as an afterthought, look what he paid Z with full knowledge that Lebron's bill was coming up.)

The luxury tax is my only concern. I don't care for Gilberts finances, but I think he may care for the luxury tax. Gooden is an asset, and if that asset could cause future finacial problems, we may have to deal. I want Gooden back, but in the 2-3 years time I don't want to see us dumping players for garbage just to cut contracts.
