Game Thread | Game #21 | Cavs @ Raptors | Nov. 28, 2022

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Interesting fact:

I don’t think this team would have named itself the Raptors if it had current-day knowledge of what Velociraptors really look like.

What archaelogists understood to be velociraptors (raptors) around the time Jurassic Park was made, and thus when this team was named, was really the Deinonychus. Which is unwieldy for a team name.

The real velociraptor looked more like a chicken/hawk sorta thing.

Ah, but I thought 'raptors' were a family of dinosaurs, including Utah raptors, which were 20 feet long. But the last time I dove into the various types of Raptors was the 90s.

Feather depictions are usually a lot of speculation and educated guesswork. We have just dribs and drabs of coloration.

So it's Mobley at center, Wade at PF, Osman and Okoro at SF, and Garland, Mitchell and LeVert at guard. Robin Lopez is the only other big available with Allen, Love, and Diakite out.

We will have 10 players available, including Isaiah Mobley.

Schedule loss plus injury loss. Even if Siakam and Barnes are out plus Achiuwa I don't see how we pull this off unless Garland and Mitchell get 40 each and Okoro does a great defensive job on Anunoby.

The nice thing is, it's possible for Mitchell and Garland to get 40 each. So I have hope.

The Raptors' bigs are a rather skinny bunch. Boucher is 6'9", 200. Koloko is 7'1", 230. Hernangomez is 6'9", 214.

Robin Lopez is 7'0", 281. He'll be able to go wherever he wants. On offense he'll be able to back down whoever is guarding him and get good position for his hook shot. He'll also be able to push his way into position for offensive rebounds.

On defense he can use his width and bulk to keep these skinny leapers off the glass. Offensive rebounding is a huge part of their offense.

He won't be quick enough to guard those guys but he might be a load for them to handle on the offensive and defensive glass.

This is true. Raptors were a family of dinosaurs and an aka for birds of prey now.

Deinonychus, oviraptor and others are raptors. The Utahraptor was actually pretty kickass. Huge.

But the Raptors were def named after the Velociraptor, as evidenced by the original (terrible) logo.

There is also speculation now that the T-Rex was covered in colorful down, was a scavenger, lumbered around somewhat slowly, and made a low rumbling sound instead of the signature T-Rex scream.

Depending on perspective, could potentially ruin the T-Rex. Since the 90s, other therapods have been discovered that were bigger than T-Rex and more vicious and almost definitely could have kicked its ass.

Just ask Flash. He’s a big Spinosaurus guy.

I'm guessing Diakite is out because he's assigned to the G League, not due to injury.

If Barnes and Siakam are playing, might as well rest Mobley, DG, and Mitchell and just take the 30 point loss.

I think GS did that last week, resting Steph, Klay, Dray, and maybe one or two other key players and got blown out at NOLA.

You need to bombard the official Raptors Twitter/mastodon/facebook / hinge / whatever social media they are now using with this picture on every single post.

Brilliant.

If Mobley hits five 3's we can win this. But only if Siakam and Barnes are out.

This game could be Diakite's chance to make a statement.

Don't look now but Okoro is playing some decent ball. He's hitting 51.2% from the field and 35.3% on 3's in November. He had seven rebounds against the Pistons.
Diakite’s going for 30 and 20. You heard it here first!
