How did you became a Cavs fan? For those who are not from Cleveland.

Grew up a Browns, Cavs and Red Legs fan. I was in Mid-Ohio and no Bengals or Royals at the time. Still remember first Browns and Cavs games I went to. Philly with Dr J were playing the Cavs. The Steelers and the Browns were playing- what a crowd. Great experiences.

LeBron fans were LeBron fans when he was at St. Vincent St. Mary, when he was in Cleveland, when he was in Miami, when he's back in Cleveland, when he becomes an owner one day, when he's in his grave. We were loyal fans when Cleveland burned his jersey. We were fans of his when he didn't have a jumpshot, when he didn't have post-up moves, when the world hated him, when the world loves him. We claim to be loyal LeBron fans, even when he's 38yo and becomes the 100th ranked player in the NBA.

Just a word of advice to "bandwagoners" trying to win us over: Stories like this will not work. I understand the thought process. You try and say "Hey, we've had tough times too, you and I are not so different." It just has the opposite effect.

Cleveland sports fans have put up with so much crap, we will never view another fan's suffering or loyalty as equal to our own. It's like having a compound fracture in both legs, and having someone say, "I know what you are going through, I sprained my ankle once."

It just so happens that Cavs fans and LeBron fans share a common goal: That is...for LeBron and the Cavs to get a championship. Cavs fans want a championship for Dan Gilbert and his organization. LeBron fans want the team to get a championship because that's a part of his legacy. I'm not from Cleveland, I can't lie about having love for the city. I'm from NYC, I just could never get myself to like the Knicks organization, and the process of not having a team to root for forced me to become a player fan over 20 years ago.

Statements like the bolded show just how out of touch you really are. I can guarantee you the vast majority of Cavs fans here don't give a fuck about Dan Gilbert or even the organization in general. We want to see a championship for the city of Cleveland, so we can celebrate and have that shared experience with our brothers and sisters and families and best friends and everyone else in the Northeast Ohio region who have paid good money to go to these games for decades, and have had nothing to celebrate or show for it. Most of us on this forum and from the city of Cleveland have bonded from watching this team and going through all these trying times together for several years.

So on the day when the Cavs finally win a championship, congratulations, your favorite player won another trophy. But for those of us who have been following this team for years, I guarantee you us "Real Cavs Fans" will get more enjoyment out of that day than you ever will.

Became a CAVS fan when I was born.

As much as I dislike bandwagoners I will say this. I do care about the Cavs winning one. I'm an all Cleveland sports fan but for me a basketball ship is what I want to see. I have followed the Cavs obsessively since high school. I can't say that about browns or Indians. I also love Dan gilbert and want him to win one. He hasn't always made the best basketball decisions. But he loves Cleveland, the fans, and has wanted to bring a ship to cleveland for the whole time he has been majority owner. Unlike man Cleveland sports owners he is willing to spend to do what it takes to win. I also still love him for the letter. He did what every Cleveland fan was thinking and I cheered him on! That said the more fans the more exciting this year will be! And if you are just joining it will not be as sweet as us who watched Alonzo gee, earl Clark, Ryan hollins, and so many others stand there watching kyrie swirving do his thing.

This thread has gone off-topic, and it's just generating arguments at this point about fandom. If you want to argue about that, take it to another forum.

Congrats to the OP for creating a memorable and interesting thread.

Welcome to all the fans who are not from Cleveland, especially when you had so many other choices. :chuckle:

Closing.
