Iman Shumpert: Gone! Thank God!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Stump is playing shut down defense when he's on the ball. Look at these numbers.

Overall: 19 DFG%, opponents usually shoot 45.8%, -26.8
Threes: 18.2 DFG%, opponents usually shoot 38.9%, -20.7
Twos: 20.0 DFG%, opponents usually shoot 49.4%, -29.4%
<6ft: 0 DFG%, opponents usually shoot 57.4%, -57.4%
<15ft: 0 DFG%, opponents usually shoot 55.3%, -55.3%
>15ft: 16.7 DFG%, opponents usually shoot 42.1%, -25.4%
Good stats but there is definitely noise there. Shump mainly guarded Paul George in the last round. Paul George was destroying JR Smith. So Shump came in, and did a good job, but compared to JR it was amazing.

Same thing with the Raptors. Shump guarded mainly Lowry and DeRozan, both of whom destroyed Brogden, Delly, and sometimes Middleton.

Shump has been good, no question, but the DFG difference is too noisy right now for me to take it to mean that he has played elite defense.

He didn't. I say that as I am wearing my Swish red alternate jersey today. But he did not do a good job on George.

Shump did a GREAT job on George. No doubt.

But JR also did a good job on George. George shot under 40% for the series. He scored in volume.

This entire post-season, our DRTG with JR on the floor is 7 points better than with him off the floor. And 4 of the 5 games were against Indiana, where JR spent the majority of the time on Paul George.

The stats just absolutely do not back up the "JR got torched by George" narrative.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on what the stats say. Against the Pacers, JR's opponents shot 8.8% better on 3pt shots and 14.5% better on shots within ten feet when he was the primary defender than on average.

Per Synergy, JR is giving up 1.182 points per possession on spot-ups this postseason, ranking in the bottom 32% of all eligible players. Not coincidently, Paul George scored 1.5 points per possession on spot-ups this postseason, good for tenth best in playoffs. He also 1.308 points per possession off of screens and 1.235 points per possession as the ball handler in a pick-and-roll, both are the best in the playoffs.

Part of this is just that Paul George is an undeniable outstanding offensive player. He was going to get his points no matter who was guarding him. But I don't think stats "absolutely" say that JR did a good job on George.

Not at every moment...but Shumpert had a really strong game tonight, and his defense was solid on DeRozan in the 4th in particular. Seemed like Lue didn't trust him, leaving JR in until he got a 5th foul, but Shumpert rewarded him by playing well for around 20 minutes straight. He has lapses on the offensive side, but he stuck with the defensive game plan tonight. Even on a night when DeRozan scored in bunches.

Fucking Shump. Dude looks irreplaceable right now. He's going to be essential against Golden State too. I was all aboard the 'trade him' train...but it's going to be hard to get an upgrade when it counts.

(I'll still take Rudy Gay, though).

Defending Shump for all those months when everyone else hated him is paying off finally!!

(I still kinda gave up on him somewhat in the last few weeks when things got really bad lol...)

He's playing much better but my one pet hate is his habit of guarding a scorer with his hands below his knees

How else is he going to shump the ball? steal is worth more than a contest/block on draftkings.
