Is AV good enough to make the all star game?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I was just pointing out that in John Hollinger's own measurement rubric, the PER, AV is clearly ahead of Hibbert by a score of 19.09 to 18.39. I personally consider the play of Hibbert and AV to be a toss up for second best center play in the East. Hibbert is more of a traditional center in the pivot while AV relies more on his positioning and agility.

I'm just pointing out Hollinger's own inconsistency here.

If you read who he thinks should be on the team, he does not take Hibbert either. He takes Chandler. He IS defaulting to stats he made up here. The funny thing about Hollinger, two years ago he was touting Andy as a DPOY candidate at mid-season. But the things Andy does the best do not show up in his PER. And the EWA is just an off shoot of the PER.

You would think a defender that good, who was #1 in offensive rebound rate, #3 in total rebound rate and who was averaging a double double would be in the conversation. And the #1 reason why I think he should be a candidate at the least is we start the worst PF in all of basketball, we start a bottom 5 SF and maybe the worst SG, yet we are 9-13. That shows just how great AV and Irving have really been. Any stat that says AV has been worth 2.5 wins and Jamison 1.4 is just wrong.

Trying to be unbiased though, Chandler is having a great year also and Hibbert is having a good year too--can't say none of them deserve it. But it is really really close.

I guess I read the wrong article... I read some ESPN front page piece about East reserves and thought it was by Hollinger. Anyway, I do think we can look forward to Irving in the conversation next season if he continues this improvement. That will be nice...

Not to nit pick, but that 20 top players comment is bunk. You don't take the top players to make a TEAM, you take the top players at their respective positions. This season, Andy's play definitely warrants much more consideration than Hollinger's comments would suggest. I mean, come on. That 20 players comment is pure garbage. After Howard, Andy is easily in any discussion of the next tier of C's this season.

Was just about to post something of this sort.

The "top 12 players" comment is what makes his comment suspect, to say the least. Obviously, you don't take the best 12 players in each conference to make up your all-star teams, otherwise we would never have any all-star snubs and we'd have ridiculously lopsided rosters, position wise.

There wouldn't be any C's on the West roster imo.

Joe Gabriel from Cavs.com wrote a pretty good article in regards to AV deserving a spot on the East squad this year.

Here's what people around the league are saying:

Celtics coach Doc Rivers: “Varejao’s always an All-Star as far as I’m concerned. I think they should keep a spot for a role player. That’s what he does, he plays his role…He had 20 points and they didn’t run one (offensive) set for him.”

Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki: “He’s an animal. We knew that coming in and he’s just great. He’s relentless…He’s got a great nose for the ball and he just keeps coming. (There are plays) when you think two guys have it and he just gets in there, tips it and someone comes up with it…He’s very active. I don’t think we’re the only team he’s done it to.”

Celtics forward Paul Pierce: “Varejao is just a pain in the butt with his offensive rebounding, the way he knocks down shots and keeps (loose) balls alive. He’s probably one of the more underrated players in the NBA with how much energy he gives this ball club…He has a knack of somehow coming up with the ball all the time.”

Heat forward LeDouche James: “There’s not many players in the Eastern Conference playing good ball like he’s playing. If he does get an opportunity, it will be well-deserved. I know how hard he works.”

Heat guard Dwyane Wade: “You have to game-plan for him. He’s not one of those guys you can say, ‘Just box him out.’ You’ve got to do other things. That’s the kind of player you look for. I heard something about role-player slots in the All-Star Game. He would be high on the list.”

Neither Anderson Varejao nor Kyrie Irving made the All-Star team. #Cavs

Numbers don't tell the true story of just how valuable and good AV has been this season. Too bad he didn't make it.

I just hate that he's not even getting snub reviews...

That's why I said numbers don't tell the story.

People see he averages 11 and 11 and it's like oh that's nice (if you're just looking at the stats).

Doesn't tell the whole story though of his impact on the court. From a numbers standpoint he isn't an all-star, but in totality of everything he does he probably has a great case as a reserve.

wasnt really surprised they didnt mention varejao as a snub. 1. cavs are 10-14. 2. there is a huge media bias against cleveland. kyrie wasnt mentioned either.
