They talked about this for a good hour on Speilman yesterday, and Chris had a good point.
Paraphrasing here: "I could see JT taking the Browns job, b/c he's a competitor. You have to be a competitor to accomplish what he's done. Knowing that he's a competitor, and that if Ohio State wins the title this year he'll have accomplished everything at that level, there will be zero left to prove, I could see him wanting a new challenge. He's done everything he can at his current level, so now he could try and prove to himself, or anyone else, that he can do it at the highest of levels.
Also, let me say that if JT was to leave OSU for the NFL, the one team, really the only team, that he would do it for would be the Browns. The hometown boy comes home. They are the only team where it would make sense for him to leave what he has, and try it again at the highest level.
On the other side, Cleveland's front office has to be licking their chops about getting a guy like JT. The fans in Cleveland are the best in the world, but they're sick of losing. Bringing JT on board would provide a ton of positive press, and the fans would have reason to feel good about the Browns.
Having said all of that, let me just say that I have no inside knowledge, and I don't think that JT is leaving. I think he will retire at Ohio State. All I'm saying is that I could see a very valid reason for him to leave, to prove to himself, the competitor that he is, that he can do this at the highest level, and that the Browns are the perfect fit for him."
My personal opinion is that he would be a successful football coach where ever he went. His style is perfect for college, but the things he excels at would translate to any level. However, for him to have more than just average or a little above average success in the NFL, getting a solid staff around him would be paramount. He's had zero experience in the NFL, and he would need to get a good staff, all with plenty of NFL experience. I think he would do that, as he's not a tyrant, like a Parcels or Butchie. Many HC's won't get any assistants who they view as a threat. Well, JT's always surrounded himself with top people, and let them do their thing. He does not even touch the defense, for example. He puts full trust in his defensive coaches.
Having said all of that, I too don't think he'll leave Ohio State:
1) It's his dream job. Why would he ever leave? Those are his words, not mine.
2) He considers himself first and foremost a teacher of young men. Those are his words, not mine.
3) Let's face it, Ohio State has many built in advantages. His first year JT went 7-5, and that's about as low as it's ever going to get. In fact, I'd probably put the cap at 4 losses as a worst case scenario for the remainder of his career in Columbus. Meanwhile, the Browns have finished above once in the last 10 years. In Cleveland, he'd have built in disadvantages, especially initially. First, they have the least amount of talent in the NFL. Second, it's not a very attractive job for free agents.
