The Plain Dealer talked about how Jim Tressel that he would only coach for the Cleveland Browns if he coached for any NFL team. Now comes to the conclusion. If OSU wins the title (which is most likely) then I could see Tressel quitting on top and trying something higher and harder. So if the Browns continue to play like they have been. Do you think that Tressel has a chance to be the Browns coach next year and that Romeo will be fired? I'm skepitcal about the whole thing right now.

I doubt he goes to the NFL for a couple of reasons...

One, he has no NFL experience what so ever. College to NFL coaches fail about 85% of the time.

Two, he would have to turn Cleveland around....no way he wants to do that.

Three, why leave OSU? That program isnt going anywhere. It should continue to be on top for a long time...it would be dumb to leave.

JT is a very smart guy, why go from being the beloved coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes to fans all over the state to...

The hated coach of the Browns?

He has a very good thing going on at Ohio State right now so I don't forsee it happening...I'd really have to have someone good replacing JT at OSU before I'd even consider him coaching the Browns.

He should definately take notice of Miami with former LSU Coach Nick Saban sitting at 1-6..

They talked about this for a good hour on Speilman yesterday, and Chris had a good point.

Paraphrasing here: "I could see JT taking the Browns job, b/c he's a competitor. You have to be a competitor to accomplish what he's done. Knowing that he's a competitor, and that if Ohio State wins the title this year he'll have accomplished everything at that level, there will be zero left to prove, I could see him wanting a new challenge. He's done everything he can at his current level, so now he could try and prove to himself, or anyone else, that he can do it at the highest of levels.

Also, let me say that if JT was to leave OSU for the NFL, the one team, really the only team, that he would do it for would be the Browns. The hometown boy comes home. They are the only team where it would make sense for him to leave what he has, and try it again at the highest level.

On the other side, Cleveland's front office has to be licking their chops about getting a guy like JT. The fans in Cleveland are the best in the world, but they're sick of losing. Bringing JT on board would provide a ton of positive press, and the fans would have reason to feel good about the Browns.

Having said all of that, let me just say that I have no inside knowledge, and I don't think that JT is leaving. I think he will retire at Ohio State. All I'm saying is that I could see a very valid reason for him to leave, to prove to himself, the competitor that he is, that he can do this at the highest level, and that the Browns are the perfect fit for him."

My personal opinion is that he would be a successful football coach where ever he went. His style is perfect for college, but the things he excels at would translate to any level. However, for him to have more than just average or a little above average success in the NFL, getting a solid staff around him would be paramount. He's had zero experience in the NFL, and he would need to get a good staff, all with plenty of NFL experience. I think he would do that, as he's not a tyrant, like a Parcels or Butchie. Many HC's won't get any assistants who they view as a threat. Well, JT's always surrounded himself with top people, and let them do their thing. He does not even touch the defense, for example. He puts full trust in his defensive coaches.

Having said all of that, I too don't think he'll leave Ohio State:

1) It's his dream job. Why would he ever leave? Those are his words, not mine.
2) He considers himself first and foremost a teacher of young men. Those are his words, not mine.
3) Let's face it, Ohio State has many built in advantages. His first year JT went 7-5, and that's about as low as it's ever going to get. In fact, I'd probably put the cap at 4 losses as a worst case scenario for the remainder of his career in Columbus. Meanwhile, the Browns have finished above once in the last 10 years. In Cleveland, he'd have built in disadvantages, especially initially. First, they have the least amount of talent in the NFL. Second, it's not a very attractive job for free agents.

If he went to coach the Browns after winning another nati for the Bucks and he he won a superbowl with the Browns he will be the greatest man in Ohio history. He will have his own musuem, hell Ohio will be renamed Tressel.

I would guess Romeo would get one more year of sucktitude, basically they will put him in the impossible situation where if he doesn't make the playoffs next year he's gone. Then you bring in a Tressell, and he has a solid core of guys to compete with, and has a good chance from year one.

I would love to have him here... I'd dump Romeo in a New York minute... I'd take Tressel over hin ANYDAY of the week... Tressel is a guy whom all the players AND coaches love, no doubt.. He's also a guy who knows how to reload...

Tressel is a true class-act. I would love for him to coach for the Browns but only after he wins another championship with Ohio State. Even if he does he should stay since he knows how to coach College Football.

I can't see him ever going to the NFL. He's a college coach and should stay there. I personally don't see him being a successful NFL coach. It's very different than coaching in college.

Well if you think about if, If Tressel wins the national title again and Cleveland is looking for a coach (something happens to crennel) I don't see him passing it up. He is a Browns fan and I think he would be up for a challenge (Oh what a challenge it would be) but odds of it happening are probaly very very slim.

Have you heard of Paul Brown? You know, the guy who the Browns are named after?

Yes I have sir, but the last time he coached was roughly 40 years ago. Brown had the best football player ever, otto, the toe and many other hall of famers.

You ever read when all was browns town by tony grossi by chance???

I think he's going to die at a buffet table..like the Romans did. They gorged themselves with food, forced themselves to vomit, and went back to the table. :chuckles:

I haven't read it, but if you have then you know that Paul Brown started both Ohio NFL teams, and won the Super bowl with one, and the equivalent of the Super Bowl a few times over with the other. How in the world is Tressel suppose to top that in the annals of Ohio Sports history?

Oh, and he won the national title with Ohio State in just his second year there, so JT doesn't even have that on him.

I appreciate your enthusiasm, and I love JT as much as the next guy, but I'm having a hard time seeing how he can accomplish more than Paul Brown.
