Joe "Captain America" Harris

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: #33: Joe Harris - G/F - University of Virginia

It's not like we missed a gem in Green. He's as one-dimensional as they come, and can only thrive in a system like the Spurs', where he's surrounded by ball-handlers/playmakers. He can just camp out at the 3-pt line. Harris is more versatile, albeit not by a massive margin.

I expect Harris to score most of his points as a jumpshooter, but he'll make all the right plays-- tipping rebounds to teammates, nailing his help defense responsibilities, smart cuts to the basket, etc-- to the point that I think he cracks the rotation as a rookie and proves to be a key cog for us. You just can't go wrong playing a guy like Joe Harris in crunch time.

What little film I saw makes me think you are right. He had a really good court awareness. He was the first to recognize his own miss and went after it. I love to see that. He just looks savvy. He is a shooter, but also a basketball player.

Re: #33: Joe Harris - G/F - University of Virginia

His senior year, Danny Green shot 42% from three and 85% from the line, and averaged 6 rebounds, 2.3 steals, and 1.7 blocks per 40.

His senior year, Joe Harris shot 40% from three and 64% from the line, and averaged 4.5 rebounds, 1.4 steals, and 0.3 blocks per 40.

Don't get me wrong...I think Harris has the potential to be a useful bench player, especially in Blatt's system. But Danny Green showed much more potential than him in college as a shooter and as a defender. I don't think it's realistic to expect Harris to develop into that level of player.

Not sure I agree with Green showing more potential as a shooter (definitely a more well rounded prospect though). From distance I think Harris shows much more potential to be a 3 pt specialist. Looking just at their senior seasons skews their percentage from distance a bit....

FR, SO, JR, SR 3 Pt %
Harris: 41.7%, 38.0%, 42.5%, 40.0%
Green: 35.5%, 29.6%, 37.3%, 41.8%

Also looking at the volume, Green didn't really see much of the court or the 3 pt line until his senior year. Harris meanwhile put up very consistent numbers for 4 years:
3 Pt Makes / Attempts
Harris: 65/156, 49/129, 77/181, 72/180
Green: 27/76, 24/81, 56/150, 77/184

Not saying Green was not a notable shooter from distance coming out of UNC, but he was known for knocking down open 3s in transition. I believe Harris is far more adept at shooting the 3 coming off screens in a half court offense. I guess I take more issue with the comparison to Green...he brings a lot to the table, especially surrounded by playmakers in the Spurs offense, but he's just a different player than Harris in my mind.

I thanked this for the comments on Harris. I don't support your opinions on Green. He's a nice defender as well and he's primarily a floor spacer because that's what his team needs.

I only meant one-dimensional regarding his offensive abilities. He's one of the worst ball-handling guards in the NBA. With guys like Manu and Parker on the court with him, he gets to camp out at the 3 pt line. He's a 3 and D wing in the truest sense-- virtually no ability offensively besides making set jumpshots, and he's a nice perimeter defender. Definitely don't want to sell him short on that end.

Not sure if posted. I love this guy and I look forward to him being in the rotation for a long time.

Virginia guard Joe Harris ‘overwhelmed’ to go from one Cavs team to another - Mark Giannotto, Washington Post

Former Virginia guard Joe Harris found out the news before anyone else.

Back home in Chelan, Wash., to watch the 2014 NBA draft with family and friends, he had received a call from his agent alerting him that the Cleveland Cavaliers planned to select him with the No. 33 overall pick in the second round. Harris tried to play coy.

But as ESPN’s coverage went to a commercial break, he couldn’t hide the excitement on his face any longer. Harris’s NBA dreams had come true.

“To be honest, I don’t even know how to describe it or explain it,” Harris said late Thursday night. “You’re just really overwhelmed. It’s hard to even believe it’s happening. It was just a really long day.

“Ever since the draft came on and it got to the range of picks that my agent had kind of felt I would be going in, it had gotten pretty long just waiting to see who was doing what and who were they picking. It’s kind of a weight off your shoulders a little bit to get the call from my agent and then to see my name get called. Unbelievable feeling.”

Harris will join a team full of No. 1 overall draft picks, including point guard Kyrie Irving, forward Anthony Bennett and Thursday night’s top pick, Andrew Wiggins. His family and friends have already begun joking, “Once a Cavalier, always a Cavalier.”

Harris noted Thursday night that several NBA teams had questions about why his statistics dropped during his senior year after earning first team all-ACC honors as a junior. But he felt the organizations that didn’t harp on it -- such as Cleveland -- were the ones that truly appreciated his game.

He averaged 12 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists as Virginia made a run to the Sweet 16 this past season after scoring more than 16 points per game the year before when the Cavaliers just missed out on the NCAA tournament. Still, there were plenty of NBA teams enamored with his 6-foot-6 frame, outside shooting touch and sneaky athleticism.

“I think the teams that didn’t really have question marks concerning that are the teams that really believed in me and knew what I was capable of and what I’m capable of going forward,” Harris said. “Those teams that showed the most interest, like the Cleveland Cavaliers, are the teams that are willing to take a chance on you. They believe in you and what you’re capable of and obviously I must have done something right in my workouts and all my preparation after the season trying to get myself ready for this point.”

Harris called his workout with Cleveland the “toughest” he went through during the pre-draft process, which is particularly noteworthy considering Harris broke his nose in three places during a workout with the Miami Heat.

He becomes the second Virginia player during the Tony Bennett era to be drafted in the second round, joining Atlanta Hawks forward Mike Scott (2011). Harris is also the highest-picked prospect from Charlottesville since Roger Mason Jr. went No. 31 overall in 2002.

“There’s still no guarantee. I have to earn my keep,” said Harris, alluding to the non-guaranteed contract he will sign as a second-round pick. “This isn’t something where you can settle or be satisfied. I know I have a lot of areas and room to improve. ...

“I’m gonna try to be an extremely solid role player at the next level and I’m very understanding of that. I don’t think too highly of myself, but at the same time, I don’t think too lowly of myself. I’m very excited for this opportunity. I’m excited to prove to Cleveland, to my teammates, to the organization, to show everybody that they made the right decision with the pick they had.”

On a side note, former Virginia forward Akil Mitchell went undrafted Thursday night, but will likely find a spot on an NBA summer league roster in the coming days.

“I was fortunate to play in a program where it was all about the team first,” Harris said. “I was able to mature and get that experience. I understand who I am as a player. You know what you’re going to get with me: A role player.”

“Kyrie (Irving) had a short stint with Duke, but we’re in the same year in school. I’ve known of him for quite a while. I’m excited to be a part of all this.”

Re: #33: Joe Harris - G/F - University of Virginia

This is a page straight out of the Spurs' book. You'll notice that in the finals, the Spurs players had a role. The better players had a larger role, but everyone knew what they were on the court for. This is the type of player that you have a better chance to hit on at this juncture of the draft because you're not trying to find a sleeper, but rather a specialist. Encouraging mind-set for the team. Most importantly, the Cavs drafted 2 guys who know how to put the ball in the basket.

Hopefully he makes it past training camp because I want him in practices picking Mike Millers brain about every possible thing. He may not play a lot but there's no reason he can't learn from Miller
