Johnny Manziel: Swan Won't Return His Calls

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
That's not to say that Johnny won't be good either. I think Bortles is going to be the best QB from this draft, but Manziel should be right on his heels. I'm stunned with the amount of progress that Manziel has made just from his last college game to his first preseason game. His footwork is miles ahead of where it was in college, giving him added power. His reads are already getting better as PFF pointed out on the Manziel review. His little 8 yard dump off pass to West was a lightening quick read from option 1, option 2, then dump off.

I am very excited to see the improvement from game 1 to game 2, now. Johnny seems, actually, like quite the quick learner, which is a skill that nearly all of our drafted QB's lacked. Whether or not Manziel can ride the line of risky and reckless successfully...well, we'll see.

Pettine starting to remind me of lorne greene in bonanza.

Even if Hoyer were to hold off Manziel and secure the starting job heading into Week 1, it wouldn’t mean he’d keep it long term. And neither Pettine nor offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan have ruled out creating a package for the mobile Manziel, so Johnny Football could still play some as a backup.
Inside linebacker Karlos Dansby seems to think that’s in the cards.
“I know Kyle. Kyle’s a young, energetic guy,” Dansby said of the Browns’ offensive coordinator. “There’s no telling what Kyle’s going to do, so I’m loving it. I’ve got a certain kind of vibe that I feel off Kyle, so I think I’ve got his mindset, where he’s going to go with this thing. He’s got so many different things he can do with both of those quarterbacks, so it’s going to be exciting.”
Is creating a special package part of the excitement?
“A whole lot of that’s going on,” Dansby said. “It’s going to be something new.”

I read with anticipation hoping there was a point, I was sorely disappointed.

i read it as "expect hoyer to start, but manziel will play a couple series a games, until we figured out manziel is either worthy of starting or shouldnt be playing"

Manziel just has to totally outclass hoyer. I think he can do it. I dont see hoyer giving the browns a better chance to win.

and AZ at this point the only reason hoyer is slated to start is because he is not a rookie.

i can see Pettine being concerned if Johnny starts and falters he will have to stick by him whereas if hoyer falters he can just plug in manziel.

and Kyle putting in a manziel package for the regular season regarrdless if he starts is big news

I cannot even begin to describe the amount of hostility I would have for Kyle Shannahan if they create a special "Manziel" package.

I'm kinda pulling for Johnny to outright win the job, but if he loses the battle, please don't force him onto the field in some bullshit zone-read pistol package. Just no. Don't do it. Please don't.

Anyone paying attention to Pettine's quotes to the media should know that Hoyer starting game 1 of the regular season has been a high degree of certainty unless Manziel absolutely lights it up in the preseason. Not improves incrementally... but lights it up. I think a Manziel package to change things up is the best way to give fans and the media what they want. Jim Harbaugh did it with Kaepernick as a rookie to limited success. It also helped get Kaepernick acclimated to a pro style offense. Hell, Josh Cribbs jumped under center for a few series back in the day to keep defenses on their toes.

The folks thinking Manziel is going to win the job when he still can't drive the offense in preseason perplex me.

And if Hoyer starts week 1, I'll be his biggest fan. Our division is so wide open I just want to win and make a run at the playoffs. And I like Hoyer, I just enjoy the unpredictability Manziel brings each play. It's fun. But again, Hoyer brings some good qualities to the field, namely his quick trigger.

In all honesty though in regards to pre-season, if I knew nothing about Hoyer or Manziel and watched the Detroit game, I'm taking Manziel based on what I saw. Strong arm, good mobility, and actually made the most out of being put in some bad situations play-calling wise.

I can see you figuring out a way to tangle yourself in knots trying to justify just about anything that happens going forward.

I just wish you'd do it in a more readable fashion.

3 days and i wont need to justify anythings. that cold black cloud is coming down for hoyer

No matter what happens on the field, I'm going to start using negative rep if I don't see some attempt at grammar above the 3rd grade level. It is an embarrassment.

Nobody knows who you want starting or the thesis of most of your posts lately. You don't write clearly enough.

I haven't been able to understand him for years, what's this lately stuff about?

I'm hoping Hoyer plays well because I prefer his style that we saw last year where he makes a quick decision and gets rid of the ball. I think that will be more beneficial to us with what we have for receivers without Gordon. Quick timing routes where the receiver is open by design rather than due to his ability to separate. I'm predicting that with Manziel we'd have more of him running too soon because nobody can get open fast enough if he misses the read and has to improvise, and then he gets murdered. I don't think he's ready yet for what he'd face. I would feel much better about Johnny with Gordon playing, but I'd still prefer Hoyer this year.

Interesting read....

Author: Johnny Manziel draft card was snatched out of Jerry Jones' hand

We know that the Dallas Cowboys came close to drafting Johnny Manziel and we know that because Jerry Jones told us. Thanks to a new book, we now know how close the Cowboys might have been to grabbing Johnny Football.

In 'Manziel Mania,' author Jim Dent says that Jerry Jones literally had the Manziel draft card 'snatched' out of his hand before he could turn it in.

"Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones had snatched the Manziel card straight out of his dad's hand. Otherwise, Jerry would have drafted him and JFF would have sat for at least three years behind Tony Romo," Dent wrote in an excerpt provided to the Dallas Morning News.

Dent seems to be a credible source on the subject of the Cowboys. The author covered the team for 11 years and even wrote a book about Jerry Jones.

"I could just see Jones grabbing Manziel with the 16th choice of the first round," Dent writes. "I wrote a book about Jerry Jones in 1995 titled 'King of the Cowboys.' I know the Boss Hog. I knew that Jones' hands were shaking when the Cowboys went on the clock with Manziel still on the board. I could envision Jones scribbling the name of Johnny Manziel on the draft card. Indeed, all of these things happened."

Dent's story is actually pretty consistent with what Jerry Jones said back in July.

"I want you to know that almost as I was handing in the card, it was that close to putting that Manziel card in. It was that close,” Jones said told NFL Network. "I looked over to my son, Stephen, our chief executive officer, and I said 'I took the right pick..' He was the top player by three players on our board at the time that we were sitting there looking at him."

The only part Jerry Jones left out in his story was the snatching part, but that's understandable, because no one wants to talk about their son undermining them by snatching something away.

Anyway, we all know what happened next: The Cowboys didn't draft Johnny Football with pick No. 16. Instead, they went with a slightly less newsworthy pick in the form of Notre Dame offensive lineman Zack Martin. Johnny Football then sat in the green room for six more picks before the Browns 'snatched' him at No. 22.
