Johnny Manziel: Swan Won't Return His Calls

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I see your point but I disagree. Is giving the middle finger during a game a story? Not really. But he has a lot of these little quasi-stories all the time.

Drinking and being kicked out of the Manning Academy
+
Getting Kicked out of a Texas Frat Party
+
Partying in Vegas with Gronk
+
Partying in a Vegas Bathroom rolling a $20 bill
+
Flicking off an opposing team on MNF
+
Countless other things that I can't recall off the top of my head.

When you add them all up, collectively it becomes a story of his maturity.

I don't want it to seem like I'm picking your post apart; however, getting booted from a frat party for a frat you're not in at a school that rivals yours is not necessarily his fault. I've booted guys from a frat party just for being random...

Random aside...

I once got tossed over a railing and into the bushes during a party at the "baseball house" freshman year in college for pretty much no reason.

So, that was fun.

He should have been kicked out by the UT Frat boys. He shouldn't have even been there in the 1st place. That's the point. Stupid decision.

As far as play on the field, Washington seemed like the booby trap game for this offense. Who knows how to stop a Kyle Shanahan vanilla preseason offense better than the team who faced the scheme in practice last year?

Hoyer and Manziel both struggled mightily. Tate actually looked strong, which led me to believe Washington keyed on pressuring the quarterback over containing the run. As the MNF crew alluded, splitting the series didn't get either quarterback into a flow.

Preseason game #2 is a little too early to turn on Shanahan, but I am comfortable being nervous about Shanahan.

It's only pre-season, but you can just tell he doesn't have the tools to succeed. I'm rooting for him, but I already dislike him. Not based on the off the field stuff even really. Just based off the fact that you can just tell he doesn't have it.

What really sucks is that Hoyer isn't very good either, so it's not like Johnny's gonna learn a hell of a lot behind him, other than to maybe get rid of the ball quickly.

This team is truly unbelievable with Quarterbacks and Coaches. In 15 years to not even get close at either of the most important spots in football. I mean, if you gave three of us on this board that long we could have picked an elite QB SOMEWHERE in there. And, of course, if you get an elite QB you all of the sudden have a great coach too.

This rotating of series with QB's was so stupid and probably indicative of more stupid decisions upcoming.

This receiver core will be bottom 5 in the league and it'll really be mostly due to lack of talent. The shitty QB play won't help, but there's just nothing out there to throw to without Gordon.

It will be a huge test for this organization to move on quickly from the Manziel experiment if/when it fails to produce the results expected.

They'll have a great opportunity to get a top flight QB in 2015 with the ammo to move up. I'd be hard pressed not to take it if we're going to watch Manziel's mechanics consistently break down under pressure and see his legs negated by the speed of the NFL defenses.

Oh...and is there anything more indicative of a guy that's going to fail in the NFL than having to bootleg them every other play to get away from the line? I seriously shake my head every time I've seen it happen. The Browns have to lead the league in bootlegs since '99.

Garcia, McCown, Frye, Quinn, Wallace, Colt, and clearly Manziel. All of them had to run a bunch of bootleg. Some due to lack of pocket presence, some due to lack of size and some due to just being panicky losers.

If they don't lead the league in bootlegs, then they certainly lead the league in thrown off the back foot panic interceptions. How many of those have we seen?

Well, I can see everyone is staying level headed here...

I'm pretty level-headed. I'm just telling it like I see it. Objectively.

If you were to ask anyone without a rooting interest in the Browns who observed this off-season and the pre-season thus far, they'd tell you exactly what I am.

Then you announce him the starter today, let him play out the whole year. If you are going to try and get ANOTHER rookie QB next year, you have to throw him in the cage and let him fight it out to see if you see any light at the end of the tunnel.

They'd also have made a snap judgement in the 2nd pre-season game of his rookie season... Not a surprising take from less-than-expert football fans watching from a distance. Look, I didn't want to draft Johnny, but that doesn't mean I'm going to sell him after half of the pre-season. That is trolling, honestly.

Thinking about this objectively, I saw a lot of issues. One, Johnny read the field in halves at A&M. That means he chose a side of the field and operated within it. In the NFL that is much more difficult because the reads aren't that simple. Not only that, but the routes aren't designed within that scope. Johnny looks like he's staring down receivers because he picks a side and goes with it. That will take time to develop... Also, Johnny needs to throw while balanced. Too many throws were off-balance last night and he didn't step-up in the pocket to make an accurate throw at all.

You know what? That doesn't mean he's already failed. Not even close. It means he has a lot of football work to do.

Everything you just described are future indicators of failure in the NFL. Name me a QB that's had all those problems and succeeded. Seriously...find me a single one.

He hasn't already failed, but he will.

Brett Favre. Joe Namath.

Brett Favre. Joe Namath.

Favre experienced immediate success in the NFL. Joe Namath absolutely sucked.

If Johnny Manziel puts up the numbers Favre did his first year as a starter, he will absolutely shock the world. If he puts up Namath numbers, he'll be one of the worst QBs in the league and gone in two years.

And not to mention that Favre's got several inches of height on Manziel.

2nd preseason game. Team went 5-11 last year. Has no WR's. How about we have some patience and look for gradual improvement before we start the 2015 mock drafts?
