Johnny Manziel: Swan Won't Return His Calls

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Preseason stats
30/59, 50.8%, 296 yds, 2 TD, 0 INT, 6 sacks, 76.7 rating, 12 rushes, 88 yds, 7.3 avg, 1 TD

Pretty much to be expected. He's got a lot to work on in terms of mechanics and footwork, but he makes just enough really good plays to make you think with experience and improvement he could actually make it.

Carr and Bridgewater have both looked better than Manziel this preseason... No one doubts his play making ability, but his arm looks shaky. I'm hoping it's just his mechanics.

But both were expected to look better, because they're much more complete pieces. I hate, and I don't mean to put this on you, comparing rookie QB's to rookie QB's level of success in preseason football. It happens every year, and it's just absolutely pointless.

To be honest... Id rather have Flipper, the ginger headed wonder boy. JFF makes grandpa Weeden look like a clear cut starter.
Dude.

Can't argue with all of the negative stuff that is being pointed out. But Manziel did seem to play faster last night. Looked like he was more comfortable. Manziel out of the pistol could be a nightmare already for teams to defend near the goal line.

Any comparisons to Bortles and Bridgewater need to come with a huge asterisk: those guys had another season in college to develop - and they aren't starting yet either. I know lots of people want to be first to call someone a bust. But this guy is 21-years-old and has a lot to learn. He also appears to be the type of guy who will put in the work to get better. Let's give it a minute.

He was more comfortable because he was basically playing a great college team last night. More of what he is used to.

This only makes me angry because if they turn out to be good which I think they will they will join the long line of QBs we passed on.

I liked Bortles a lot coming out but I was a bit nervous about him at 4. Turns out we didn't get an opportunity to draft him but had he been the pick I would be optimistic right now. Bridgewater was the guy I've wanted for the past 1.5 years and we passed on him. Carr I also really liked when most people were turned off. The rest of the class I didn't care too much for. All 3 of these guys are off to great starts while Manziel looks the least ready to contribute. I hate to be Debbie downer but man am I disappointed right now.

So that's where we are, lamenting passing on David Carr. Keep it coming guys!

I think he won the pre-season rookie QB MVP last night.

Unfortunately you don't win anything, and he is still playing for one of the few organizations which has been more dysfunctional than Cleveland over the last few years. But he'll always have pre-season Week 4.

Most of my opinion remains unchanged after last night, but it was still good to see his awareness at least. He rushed throws, didn't settle/gather balance before throwing.. His runs are really good, regardless of what defense it was against. You can tell that while things are moving very quickly, he's working on getting his brain moving that fast.

Not to bring this dude up again, but you can tell he's watching tape of Russell Wilson. When escaping the pocket, he actually didn't do a bad job of keeping his eyes downfield, on his receivers. It's just wild that his accuracy seems to increase as he's on the move, or comfortable rather. There's no doubt that Johnny has a long road to go down before the game isn't too quick and he can start, but I'm not discouraged that much.. The kid seems to be working through his problems, which even the greatest skeptics should recognize and respect.

I liked Carr in the draft and he's playing well in the preseason. I can say neither about Manziel. That's what I'm saying.

I'm saying preseason games mean absolutely nothing when projecting future NFL careers.

Manziel's throwing was clearly off last night. Don't know why, but I've never seen him throw ducks like that before. There's always been criticism of his mechanics, but the ball hasn't quacked. So either it was just an off-night, or he forgot overnight how to throw a spiral. I go with the off night.

Otherwise, to me, he seemed to process information faster than in previous games.

I'm still stuck on the "two years of college ball" thing. He should be behind the other QB's in some respects. And, considering that Hoyer has looked worse with this particular offense and this particular set of receivers than he did last year, I don't see why that same handicap wouldn't be applicable to Manziel.

Just think it is way too early to make any kind of call on this kid.
