Johnny Manziel: Swan Won't Return His Calls

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm saying preseason games mean absolutely nothing when projecting future NFL careers.
I disagree with that statement. Anyone can improve that's for sure but to say preseason games mean nothing is over the top.

Numbers and results mean little, but you're still able to scout the player and get a feel for where they're at mechanically.

Manziel has not been good, let's just be honest about it.

Over the top? Welcome to the Johnny Manziel thread Phills, where Johnny is already a bust that plays nothing like Russell Wilson.

He really doesn't and if he did, I don't think the coaches would have been rebranded him as Johnny clipboard.

Wut?

Sorry if my opinions don't mesh with yours but I don't believe Manziel's skill set transfers to the NFL. I have never believed they would and I've seen nothing that even makes me remotely second guess that. So do I call him a bust? No, not yet. He can improve. Will he improve enough to meet his draft slot? I think other guys like Bridgewater and Carr will but my opinion is that Manziel won't.

What is this ridiculous Manziel and Wilson comparison. Just because they are the same size doesn't mean they are the same player. They are not.

Manziel's throwing was clearly off last night. Don't know why, but I've never seen him throw ducks like that before. There's always been criticism of his mechanics, but the ball hasn't quacked. So either it was just an off-night, or he forgot overnight how to throw a spiral. I go with the off night.

I think the ducks are partially a result of his rushing and pressing. I, too, think it's too early to send someone off, even though I wasn't a Manziel fan in the draft. I'm kind of tired of the sell without analysis take that dominates this thread. Wish we'd pay attention to progress (or lack thereof), rather than snark.

I don't think it's that ridicilous.. You know for damn sure that Johnny is watching film of RW.. They aren't the same player, but I certainly expect JM to try to adopt some of Wilson's characteristics.

Why is Manziel watching Wilson film and not Drew Brees? Doug Flutie?

Personally I hope he isn't watching Wilson film because they have a different skill set. I rather hope he watches Brees film so he can learn to be a 6'0 qb that can throw 5k yards from the pocket. Eventually the scrambling catches up to every qb in the nfl, even Wilson.

I've never said they were the same player, but to act like their playing styles are wildly different is ridiculous. Throughout his career the Seahawks have leaned on the run and featured roll outs to create passing lanes for him, which is exactly how the Browns will use Johnny this year.

Some are treating Wilson like a Manning brother, he's not a traditional pocket passer.

If he wants to have success in the NFL that is absolutely what he SHOULD do. Playing like Wilson is how he will have success in this league. However; that role is not his style or personality. He wants to be the man. He wants to be the center of attention. He wants to put everything on his back and make the spectacular play to win a game. That's not how Wilson plays. If Manziel could calm down, play within the system most of the time and then make the spectacular play every once in a while he has a real chance to be good. I just think Manziel is his own worst enemy.

Tonight I'm gonna watch film on Michael Jordan, maybe one day I'll drop 30 a game and become an international icon.

They have to do that out of necessity. Absolutely Manziel will be rolled out and moved around to create throwing lanes just like Wilson is. They have to do that because they have physical limitations and they have an advantage with their feet. That makes sense. It's what they do on the roll out that is different. Wilson will take what the defense gives him and make the smart play. Manziel has always taken the overly aggressive play.

Pettine said it best last night coming back from halftime. He said Manziel made a "no no no , yes yes yes" play. He lives on the edge and when he gets out there he's going to do some spectacular plays and some real bone head plays. The question is, which will he do more of. Wilson plays it safe and it won him a super bowl last year.

Stylistically, he's Brett Favre. At least thats what he looks like to me. He wants to make a play every down, and sometimes it comes through in spades and others it's the ugliest thing you have ever seen a QB do.

He's got time on his side. This isn't Weeden where if he doesn't pan out in a year or two he is totally done. He needs some time on the bench, and on the practice field to rework his mechanics. His ability to make awkward throws and get completions out of them is impressive, but sometimes when his balance is off, you'll get quackers like you did last night on that throw to Benjamin.

He's getting there. I believe he'll eventually get there. It looks like he knows where to go with the ball now, which is a huge improvement from game 2 and a step up from game 3. Now he has to work on getting better in the pocket, stepping up and into his throws. He's got the talent, it's all right there for him.

I think we could effectively make him a starter if we absolutely need to, but I'm glad the Browns chose Hoyer to start. You can clearly see that Hoyer is miles ahead of Manziel in the pocket, and at the end of the day that's where you need your QB to make plays.

1) You can definitely watch film on more than 1 player.

2) Wilson isn't always in the pocket. Manziel thrives out of the pocket. If it's in his nature to leave the pocket, it'd be wise to see how a QB who moves well and just won the Super Bowl models his game. If Manziel is going to operate from out of the pocket a lot, even when he tries at first to make the play within, he's going to need to get his shit together outside of the pocket so later on his focus can be the pocket exclusively.

You can't just shoe-horn a guy into a mold. I'm sure the Browns are working with Manziel on operating within the pocket, but you can't just ignore the fact that his comfort zone is on the move.

We're clearly not on the same page here.

You're making a point about their decision making, which I'd certainly agree with you is vastly different. I'm talking about their playing styles, or how they're going to be used to attack defenses.
