JR Smith

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'd like to see him come back

If not, throw some cash at Arron Afflalo

Haven't watched the interview with Griffin for context, but here's Haynes quote from him on it.

That's an interesting non-committal by Griffin. I think that's playing it smart.

If JR had continued his second-half success through the playoffs, he might have been in line for a significant payday. But as recently as the mid-point of this season, he was viewed as a cancer/problem-child, that you couldn't give away at his current contract. He had the strong regular season, but then faded in the post season. And that fading away came with a loss of temper that resulted in a two-game suspension, then the weird Rihanna stuff, that weird scooter-thingy, and basically disappearing in the Finals. I could very easily see other teams thinking "yeah, that's the JR we always knew was in there", and "maybe it worked for the Cavs for a bit but I don't want to spend assets to bring that time-bomb in here", etc..

I think the demand for JR is going to be less than he thinks, and I don't think Griffin is inclined to overpay. I think he'll let JR find out what his market value is, and then resign him for a reasonable deal of reasonable length. JR was happy here, and the Cavs should take advantage of that in terms of negotiating.

Who around the NBA is going to offer him a 3 year deal with upwards of $7m+ annually? Just don't see that happening, especially after his Finals performance.

Have to say you can't blame him for that finals disappearing act. Dude was supposed to be a bench gunner. He wasn't supposed to be going against Klay all series and he wasn't supposed to be asked to do as much as we needed him to do.

I don't know why people keep saying JR faded away in the postseason. The Finals, yes absolutely. But even with his 2 game suspension he was instrumental in helping us beat Chicago, and then Atlanta, without Love and for the most part Kyrie.

That said... He's clearly behind Love, TT, Shump as far as priority goes, but it would be nice to retain him at the right price.

I definitely think they are looking for a team friendly deal or not one at all. Which is definitely smart as you have to protect yourself against a guy that might turn into a problem.

I would tell him if he wants years that he needs to sign for around 6/yr. If he wants money, then you do a shorter deal or give yourself team options.

I think it's funny that scooter is being held against him. If it were say Steph Curry on the scooter no one would care, but because it's smith its just weird.

(I agree with you by the way on the scooter being a negative mark against JR)

During the regular season, after the trade, JR's intuitive link to James was apparent on the court. James would always look to JR when bringing the ball up and hit him when he was well positioned. JR disappeared in the finals because there was only James to draw attention away from JR outside, If james was even in the game.

I think JR is a good fit, provided we have Kyrie and Love (or love equivalent) on the floor. He makes a lot more sense than any of Miller, Harris and even Jones. He will continue to make sense if we add a Mo or Wade to the back court for the same reason. His BBIQ is very high, and he undestands what the King wants him to do. If he gets space because the focus is on someone else, he can make you pay the Piper...
