I've heard this said about JR before, but isn't his contract next year not fully guaranteed? I can't imagine he's stinking up the place because he got a new contract for one year.

This year is SIGNIFICANTLY more of a contract year for him than last year was. Your post doesn't really make much sense in that regard.

I'd love to see your logic here.

Last year he had zero money guaranteed for the following season (this season). This season, he's got at least some guaranteed money next year. So in what way is this year more of a contract year than last, let alone "SIGNIFICANTLY" more?

To quote Windhorst, "Smith has guarantee dates and incentives in deal that make it likely he will get full salary. But it is overall an unusual contract." So I have to say I just flat out disagree with your post above. Just not true at all.

I think he's getting at the fact that JR did not do any favors for his market value last season, and, on top of the fact that the cap is going up so much, those two things combined give JR the opportunity to get much more money for more years than what he's currently getting.

But not next season.......which is the entire point when talking about guys being "contract year" guys. Now, next season, that's a true contract year.

This summer J.R. had a player option that he could have picked up that would have paid him 6.4 million dollars this season guaranteed. He declined that option and became a free agent and signed the contract he's under now where he's all-but guaranteed 5 million dollars this year. He again has a player option for next season at the same 5 million.

JR broke his thumb at some point, he doesn't use it as an excuse.
This quote from that article makes some sense too:
“It’s hard to just run up and down the court four or five times, then just get one spot shot, then come out of the game, then go back in the game. Getting in a rhythm early is the most important thing,” Smith said. “It’s not even so much to shoot, just to feel the ball, get the motion, get the ‘camaraderie’ within the system. I think that’s big, not only for me but for everybody. It’s not from a selfish aspect, but to feel the ball, feel the flow of the offense a little better.”

Smith has battled nagging injuries since the preseason and apparently one he didn’t even know he had. An x-ray over the weekend revealed a broken bone in his right thumb that has since healed. Smith doesn’t know how or when it happened, but team doctors told him it occurred long enough ago that it healed on its own. But the hand is still prone to swelling whenever he gets hit on it, which happened Friday at Madison Square Garden.

Geeze Louise. I'm gonna guess having a weirdly healed bone on your shooting hand wouldn't help one's shooting.

When JR is balling we are almost unbeatable. Great to see him getting healthy and start knocking down some shots.

JR for being such a bummer does move the ball well. Really good ball move!ent set up very good looks against a team with a lot of length

J.R. Smith played through a broken right thumb this season and didn't even know about it.

An X-ray taken over the weekend revealed a broken bone in Smith's right thumb that has since healed, and Smith doesn't even know when or how it happened. Perhaps this can help explain Smith's horrendous start to the 2014-15 season, and it's worth noting that his hand is now prone to swelling every time it gets hit. Smith has played well over the past two games, putting in averages of 16.5 points, 3.5 three-pointers and 1.0 steals on 59.1 percent shooting, so if he was dropped in your league, go ahead and swoop him back up.
