JR Smith

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
In addition to the team, JR seems to have really embraced the Cleveland community in a way I don't think he's done in his career. If I had to guess, I think he feels some kinship with the city...the maligned, downtrodden "loser" stigma that he's grappled so much with. I bet he perceived his time in New York as the fun, glamorous side to being a professional basketball player and nothing more. Here he actually feels "part" of something for the first time.

The guy took it upon himself to distribute clothes to the homeless people just the other day. I think the adoration is reciprocal and I would bet on JR wanting to play out the rest of his years here if it can be managed.

I disagree, honestly.

If we don't win the title and he ends up ot being that good, he hill opt-in and then have a contract year knowing he's playing next to LeBron and will be able to garner the most money possible with an estimated 108 million dollar salary cap that summer.

If we DO win the title, and he plays well, or if he just plays really well in general the rest of the year+playoffs, I could see him opting out...but..

I don't see Gilbert letting him go barring some ridiculous offer from another team, and I really don't see many,if any, teams that will be lining up to give J.R. a raise that would make it worth leaving Cleveland. Especially if we win the title, I think Dan makes sure we bring that team back. If anyone of those guys would be the odd-man out mintues wise, it would be Mo just because of how Dellavedova has developed into such a magnificent back-up PG, and Mo is a basically just bench insurance if Kyrie goes down and we need someone to hit some shots like we desperately needed in the finals last year, and also as an offensive spark off the bench, while J.R. is so much more. His athleticism and size and ability to defend(when he's locked in) is just too invaluable. He was arguably better than Shumpert for a majority of last year and we also see him this year, after getting a few games off, start to just toss up big shooting nights and quality performances left and right.

I also think J.R. has incentive to stay, I think he really likes playing here, and I think he makes a some sacrifice to be able to play next to LBJ. I think J.R. would love to finish his career and play our the rest of his prime being a key role player on a winner. To be known as a champion, as a competitor, not a knucklehead loser.

Not to mention, last year Andy essentially becomes an expiring deal, as he is guaranteed a little less than 10 million and then the following year, isn't guaranteed anything. That's where you can expect the Cavs to cut him, and along with the rising cap, we'll be able to cover the rising costs of keeping J.R, and keeping Delly, both of whom I think we need to make a point to keep. Mo is a nice piece, but more expendable than both. Not next year, but after that, we will get nice relief from getting Andy off the books(and depending on his game at the point, maybe re-sign him to a minimum deal)

I just don't think the Gilbert will break off a core piece, especially if we win a title, just to save some money and I think he's proven that he will spend.

In the next two years, Love and Irving will actually look underpaid relative to what all-star level players getting new contracts end up getting paid in the next 2,3 and 4 years/

As much as he loved playing here he still opted out. If he keeps his nose clean he should get some decent offers, i just think the Cavs view JR as replaceable and the 5th guard in the rotation. Rising cap or not, we paid everyone this year to keep long term. I am not sure they would view a 31 year old JR Smith as a long term piece and thus willing to pay the tax and salary on him.

Dont shoot the messanger, i love the guy, but you start adding things up and he might be the odd man out. They will most likely try and replace him with a vet min guy.

You need role players, if JR PLAYS D and hit the 3, he is a good one. He can dribble and drive as well.

Not claiming he isnt a good role player, claiming he might be to expensive as a 5th guard. I would love to keep him, i am just fearful that we will try to go with a vet min to fill the role of 5th guard.

If we were healthy, JR might not play much, who do you sit? Kyrie? Delly? Iman? Maybe Mo, but he plays only pg.

If Shump and Kyrie start and get 30 mins each, that leaves 36 mins between Mo, Delly and JR.

I just think the Cavs might see JR as too expensive of a luxury.

If like to play him as the backup 3. Then have Jefferson and Andy as backup 4 situationally. Then you can play

Mo
Delly
JR
Andy/Jefferson
Tristan

That's a good bench.

Yeah, I'm tired of watching myself type it but Delly at the 2 and JR at the 3 while swapping Andy and RJ just makes too much sense if you're trying to put an all-bench unit on the floor.

Jr is my favorite Cab but when it comes down to it, you Can't rely on a three point shot to be consistent as you can defense.

Hope we can keep everyone, but I understand if he's first to go

In his last five games, J.R. has averaged 17 points on .464 FG% and .450 3P% with only 0.8 turnovers per game playing 36.4 minutes. He's doing well right when we need him. Also, believe it or not, from Blatt's own mouth, J.R. is partially responsible for our better defensive efforts.

Click the following numbers to see the videos. These plays [1, 2] are from tonight's game. We need to run more of these picks/screens for J.R., especially when he's hot.. which is right now.

Jr is my favorite.. he never gets credit and has a ridiculous rap..

But any time I find him on d, he's gambling and more often than not losing, and loses his guy if he doesn't have the ball.

I'd have to look at the numbers, bc winning the gamble normally leads to a momentum shifting fastbreak dunk, but I'd be surprised if his strategy ended up being a positive

At least per player tracking stats, JR's individual defense looks pretty solid this year. Guys are shooting 42.1% against him vs 42.4% overall, meaning that he is slightly above average as a defender. There are definitely issues with the tracking stats, especially on a small sample, but the eye test matches those stats. He is putting in good effort out there, and picking up about a steal a game as well. So not a great defender but a pretty good one, at least solid.

I agree with David that JR gets a ridiculous rap, he occasionally does something head-scratching but overall seems to me to have a very good attitude. I think Lebron always knew that about him, which is why he encouraged the trade.

People think he's a bad defender, as he showed when he came here, here's a good ON-BALL defender. I just jumped on stats.nba.com, looking at stats off-screen. He's been involved in 23, more than anyone on the team, which is crazy when you think he's missed a few games, and then you read over and you have more understanding why. He's in the 19th percentile (1.22 ppp). His defense against spot-up is not much better, surprisingly 25th percentile (1.10 ppp). he's been terrible in the pick and roll, allowing 1.05 ppp 12th percentile

http://stats.nba.com/playtype/#!/off-screen/?dir=-1&OD=defensive&Season=2015-16&SeasonType=Regular Season&PT=player&sort=TeamNameAbbreviation

He's been good against ISO (0.80 ppp) and the hand-off (0.58 ppp) 83 percentile but only 12 attempts.

after looking at his stats I believe he's more average than I thought...

I don't really trust any stats until 20 GP and even then it's dicey.... However, I think the eye test backs some of what you're saying up. I think JR is a very good on the ball defender but not a great overall defender. Of course, I constantly espouse how overrated individual defense is. Really the most important thing is that you're not an atrocious individual defender. Beyond that, team defense is far more important as at the NBA level nobody can really lock up about half the starters in the league "on an island" as they're that damn good offensively that they're going to beat the first man, what matters is how the rest of the defense rotates and recovers.

I think JR is a good enough individual defender and smart enough to play within a defensive system (with occasional lapses) on a great defensive team. We have the capability of being this kind of team.

Agreed, the Spurs are the perfect example of a very High IQ defensive team. they have some guys who are not the best individual defenders like Parker,Alrdrige,Diaw ect, but their team defense is unbelievably effective and smart.

like a well oiled machine the players move and cover for each other constantly, only allowing 88ppg which is impressive.

unfortunately on our team we have too many low IQ defenders who just don't understand team defense and defensive rotations very well...

The lack of respect JR has gotten from officials this season has been criminal. And I'm not talking about on offense. I'm talking about the bullshit foul calls he gets/doesn't get on defense.
