JR Smith

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I remember the first game JR made his debut against The Rockets for us and he went 0-5 while only playing 18 minutes. Everyone was still clowning the Cavs for trading for a chucker who doesn't play team ball, saying he was a throw in a trade where Shump was the catalyst and etc... You could even tell he knew what everyone was saying about the trade because he was joking around with the media when he said that he doesn't know any of coach Blatt's plays but he's going to shoot the ball no matter what. So fast forward to the next game against GSW, what does JR do? He takes 22 shots and scores 27points while playing 42 minutes. I think that speaks volumes about the kind of person JR is, too often you'll see people change their game because their being criticized unfairly and it gets to their head. JR has great confidence in himself and I'm glad he didn't change who he is to appease a few people.

Great stuff from Lloyd (also in Lloyd thread):

1. If it seems like J.R. Smith has enjoyed remarkable space around the 3-point line this season, it’s because he has. The three consecutive 3-pointers he made in the fourth quarter Sunday were indicative of the looks he has gotten since joining the Cavs: wide open.

2. Smith made seven more 3-pointers Sunday and scored 23 points. LeBron James had 28 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, but Smith was the most consistent scorer throughout the afternoon.

3. Since arriving from New York, Smith is averaging five 3-point attempts per game when the nearest defender is at least 4 feet away. The NBA considers 4-6 feet “open” and 6+ feet “wide open.” For simplicity sake, I combined the two categories.

4. Kyle Korver is the league’s best 3-point shooter this season and plays in a Hawks system that often gets him open looks. Yet Korver is “only” averaging four 3-point attempts per game when the nearest defender is at least 4 feet away.

5. Of course, Korver is converting 53 percent of those looks, which is absurdly good. But Smith’s 39 percent conversion rate is still very good. And yet teams continue to leave him open.

6. “You’ve got to leave somebody open and the percentages are to leave the 3 open,” Smith said. “I’m not really surprised, it’s just a matter of teams picking their poison in who they’re going to leave. Fortunately it’s me a lot of the times.”

7. By comparison, Smith was only getting about 2.6 “open” looks this season with the Knicks. That number has basically doubled with the Cavs. No wonder he loves it here so much.

8. “I just think we’re moving the ball and obviously LeBron and Kyrie draw a lot of attention,” coach David Blatt said. “Both of those guys are finding him. (Smith) has learned really well how to play off those guys, where his spots are. I thought he was terrific at both ends of the court but that’s not new. J has been great since day one. I’m not tooting his horn more than he deserves, he’s just playing great basketball.”

9. The Cavs wanted to make Dion Waiters a catch-and-shoot 3-point shooter based on his numbers from last season, but Waiters never really embraced that idea. It’s part of the reason he’s now in Oklahoma City. Smith, however, is shooting 40 percent from 3 in catch-and-shoot situations.

10. “I played with him when he was Sixth Man of the Year and he was big for us,” Bucks coach Jason Kidd said. “You’re probably seeing a little more of that in him right now. … He was a big reason for our success and you could see he’s playing at a high level right now.”

11. Kidd was credited for helping keep Smith in line with the Knicks. When Kidd left, despite Carmelo Anthony’s presence in New York, Smith seemed to lose his way a bit amid all the losing. Now he’s back with another alpha figure in LeBron James and he’s again flourishing.

12. James invited Smith to Akron prior to Smith’s rookie season to work out and prepare for the draft, so the two have a deep history. While the rest of the league (and myself included) looked at the Cavs as taking a huge risk by bringing on Smith, James was all for the move. Perhaps now we’re seeing why.

13. “I just think over the course of the years I knew what he was very good at,” James said. “It’s my job when a guy comes to our team to put them in the best position to succeed. With J.R. you don’t have him running pick-and-rolls, you have me and Kyrie set pick-and-rolls so he can be the recipient on the back side. Put guys in position where they succeed the most. That’s where team comes together because everybody does their role. J.R. fits his role tremendously and more.”

Coach LeBron is so wise. :chuckle: I am glad that he has such good chemistry with JR, he's been really great for us.

JR has made 102 threes on 39.5% shooting in just 36 games. One game with 8, two with 7, two with 6, and three with 5.

Season totals:

Kyrie: 139 made at 41% in 67 games
KLove: 124 at 36% in 67 games
LeBron: 107 at 35% in 61 games
JR Smith: 102 at 40% in 36 games

Dion had made 22 at 26% in 33 games.

Since Bron returned he's been shooting 7.1 threes a game hitting them at 40.9%

cool promotion by the Cavs and JR. The guy asked a pretty interesting question on what it was like to play the Cavs on opening night.

I'm sure JR was hopeful it was a good looking lady who won the prize when he signed up for it:chuckle:

That was actually me who asked him that question lol.

My buddy won the contest and we got some sweet floor seats for that blowout game against the Nets. They gave us free food at Quaker Steak and we got to hang out with JR and his buddy Victor for about two hours.

Literally the first thing he asked us when he sat down was "You guys drinking right, cuz I know I'm drinking." We talked about Lebron's awful hairline and how he should just shave it all off. He talked about how in NY they used to watch two hours of game film the day after a game and here they only make them watch like a 3-5 min video on things they need to work on or what they did well.

Pretty much said Fisher was a shitty coach and nobody on that team respects him since he failed at bringing the triangle there and how Melo was only playing for the All Star game because of the bonuses. Totally toxic environment that he said he's so happy to be out of. Said that he loves playing here and wants to stay here past his current contract. We talked about how awesomely deep Gilbert's pockets were.

Said that he wants to stay with these guys here and that he lives in the same neighborhood as Kyrie and Kendrick and they hang out a lot. Said that if he wanted Miami weather he'd buy some palm trees for his house, because he doesn't care about any of that. (Best answer all night )

A bunch of other crap I can't remember off hand, but two other questions I asked were about him "giving the pipe" and he just laughed and said that he wanted so bad to get the rights to that phrase since he thinks it's funny as hell that people blew it up. Also, he didn't smash that model from the All Star Fashion Show, though he got her number and texted her right in front of us lol.

Last thing, we ended the night doing shots and he signed a jersey for me. All in all he's an AWESOME guy and was completely candid. Even more fun than what you'd expect from his interviews. Definitely glad that he's on the team and isn't all PR conscious like the typical NBA guys are.

Awesome man, sounds like a great time. I can definitely see that being JR's first question:chuckle:. He seems like one funny ass dude. Thanks for sharing!

Funny thing I want to mention. When the waitress brought out his Jack and ginger, he asked if she could put the next one in a big cup that they serve soda in. He kept asking the guys who were filming if he could mute his mic since he didn't want to get fined during the dinner lol.

I'll post more as I remember funny moments.

I was going to ask if you asked all those questions or said all that stuff while the camera/mics were on. I guess they were? How long did you guys get to hang with him?

He wanted to have a private conversation, and you turn around and put him on blast on the internet? Damn.

We talked for about two hours and then did all the pics/signings afterwards. He got mic'd in the beginning but only turned it on when the camera was rolling.

Haha. Trust me, I didn't share everything. He had a lot of things to say on other players in the league. I'll give you this one though.

We talked about Dion not accepting his role and all his Shaqtin' A Fool moments. One of the funniest things he said all night was that "Dion takes even more step backs than I do. Mine go in though." :chuckle:
