Kings Staying Put (was Sonics coming back)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Sonics coming back?

Is that 100 percent confirmed? I mean there's no chance it is another name or color?

How could it possibly be 100 percent confirmed when no one has officially bought the Kings yet? Until Seattle has a team, nothing will be official.

However, there's a reason Oklahoma City is not the SuperSonics. Part of Bennett's deal to get out of his stadium lease was that Seattle got to keep the name should a team ever return. Seattle also co-owns the team history with the Thunder, which means that they'll still be able to have retired jerseys of players from Sonics history like Payton hanging from their rafters.

Why would it be? Maybe the colors would change, but I'm all but sure it would be called the SuperSonics.

Re: Sonics coming back?

It will be awesome if the Sonics came back - both for the league and their fans. Hopefully that team will be better than the comeback Browns!

NBA relocation committee call reveals 'deal points' of Kings' proposed sale to Seattle group
Mon, Jan 14, 2013 1:31 PM EST
Adrian Wojnarowski

The NBA held a conference call with members of the league's relocation committee to outline deal points on the proposed sale of majority ownership of the Sacramento Kings to a Seattle-based ownership group, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The call detailed what NBA officials described as "a non-binding set of deal points" on a $525 million sale of majority ownership to the Chris Hansen-Steve Ballmer group, sources said.

Discussions have continued in the past week to push the purchase to toward completion and ultimately clear the way for the franchise to move to Seattle, sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The call took place on Tuesday – one day before Yahoo! Sports reported the finalizing of a deal – and informed several league owners that the Hansen-Ballmer Seattle group would purchase 65 percent of the Kings, sources said. The league office told members of the relocation committee that the non-binding agreement would constitute 53 percent of the franchise owned by the Maloof family and an additional 12 percent from minority owner Bob Hernreich.

The sale price of $525 million is considered an overall valuation of the franchise.

The committee is comprised of several NBA owners, including committee chair Clay Bennett of Oklahoma City.

It is unclear if the selling of 53 percent of the Maloofs' share would leave them with any future stake in the franchise, but sources have told Yahoo! Sports that there's no circumstance where the Maloofs would have any real input or governance over day-to-day team operations.

Throughout the negotiations, the Maloofs had sought a way to keep a small percentage of the team in the transaction, sources said. The Seattle group has wanted the family completely out of the organization (lol).

The Kings have yet to file for relocation to Seattle, but will do so before the March 1 deadline to ensure that the franchise can play the 2013-14 season in Seattle's KeyArena, sources said. The Seattle group plans to use KeyArena for two seasons until the completion of a new Seattle arena could be completed
.

The city of Seattle and King County has a deal with Hansen to construct a new arena once the investment group secures an NBA team. Plans to build a $500 million arena were approved by the local officials in October. The group also will change the team's name back to the Sonics. Seattle lost the Sonics when Bennett moved them to Oklahoma City in 2008.

Re: Sonics coming back?

Why in the heck didn't Kansas City try to get the Kings? Kansas needs an NBA team!! And it would be back to the old Kansas City Kings, and that sounds cool and makes sense.

I can't see KC being able to acquire or retain FAs enough to compete at all. Things are different in FA than they used to be.

And before you say "but the Jayhawks do so well, so KC would be a good NBA market!" how's that worked out in North Carolina?

From Marc Stein:

Sources: Maloofs to sell Kings

By Marc Stein | ESPN.com

The Maloof family owning the Sacramento Kings has reached a purchase agreement to sell 65 percent of the franchise to a Seattle group led by Chris Hansen for $525 million, according to league sources.

Sources told ESPN.com that NBA teams were formally notified Sunday night of the deal, which still requires league approval.

Earlier this week, Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson said he has received approval from NBA commissioner David Stern to present a counteroffer to the league from buyers who would keep the team in Sacramento.

He said the city is in a "six-week sprint" to put together a proposal for the NBA's Board of Governors to consider over a potential sale and relocation to Seattle.

The league's deadline for teams to apply for a move for the next season is March 1, though that has been extended each of the last two years for the Kings.

Re: Sonics coming back?

Let the games begin. I assume the move will be approved by Stern and the owners pretty damn quickly.

Re: Sonics coming back?

From Wojo:

The $525 million price is a "valuation" on the total franchise. For 65 percent, Seattle group would pay approximately $340 million.

Deal was struck in principle over weekend of Jan. 5-6, sources told Y! By then, Sacramento mayoral bid to find local group was too late.

Re: Sonics coming back?

Such a bummer for Kings fans.

Re: Sonics coming back?

Having family living in Seattle, and the Sonics being my favorite team (behind the Cavs, also first game I went to was a Sonics games vs. ironically the Kings) I am ecstatic over this news. Congrats for getting the team back!

Oh yeah.

Re: Sonics coming back?

Any bets on when we see that pick now?

Re: Sonics coming back?

Hey guys I know this is a bit off topic but I'm curious. I cant find anything very recent on NBA franchise value rankings. I was reading about the kings moving on another forum and some douche bag said he'd move us before them. I want to counter but don't have anything concrete. Anyone know where to find something?

All of them are estimates (and teams often sell for more these days), but here is one list:
