Looks like, as expected, Irving is a lock to make Team USA this summer. Hopefully Love gets on board too after the trade and they can start gaining some chemistry together.

DeMarcus Cousins, Miles Plumlee and Andre Drummond are competing for only one guaranteed spot as backup center, though it's possible two of them could be on the plane to Spain.

Guards Damian Lillard and DeMar DeRozan are also at risk of being cut, but that likely depends on how many of the five versatile swingmen (Klay Thompson, Rudy Gay, Chandler Parsons, Gordon Hayward and Kyle Korver) survive.

Four of those 10 players will have to be let go Aug. 29, while the following six players appear to have secure spots as what Colangelo and Krzyzewski have consistently referred to as the "core players" of the squad: Anthony Davis, Derrick Rose, James Harden, Kenneth Faried, Steph Curry and Kyrie Irving.

Irving has played like he belongs as has farried. I'm glad hes considered part of the core, with whats left his energy and speed should really help the squad. I would have to go with cousins as the last big his talent is just so much more that plumlee, although i would put him on the plane as the injury reserve.

Interesting that 4 of those 6 "core" players are guards. Harden hasn't been too impressive in play so far...don't know why he's a lock.

Because he played in the Olympics. They're not going to cut a guy who helped them win a gold two years ago. It's the same reason that, if Love decides he wants to come back after the trade is official, he'll be on the roster a day later. I kind of suspect they're keeping Plumlee around just so they can cut him if Love gets back, since no one will really care about Plumlee, whereas cutting a bigger name might cause a shitstorm.

We're naturally going to have a guard heavy line-up because most of the best forwards and centers in the game opted not to play (some due to injury). LeBron, Melo, Durant, Love, Griffin, George, Howard, etc.

In Rose, Curry, Irving, Harden and even Lillard, team USA has the best 5 guards in the tournament, at least. The US will have a ridiculously talented combo of guards on the court at all times which will cause nightmares for opposing teams. When each of those guys is on the court, the depth and minutes will be such that they can each go 100% during their minutes. We saw that with Kyrie vs Brazil on defense with how our guards can terrorize opposing guards with quickness and athleticism. K and Colangelo recognize our strength and will play to it. Don't worry too much about reacting to the size of other teams like Spain. Make them worry about reacting to what we put on the floor.

Durant, Love and George were supposed to be the other "core" players, but alas...

Harden/Thompson/DeRozan, can slide up to the 3. We'll see lineups of Parsons/Gay/Hayward at the 4. It's the new international play, where ball handling and shooting are valuable tools. The last 2 Olympics, we had LBJ and Melo share time at the 4 spot, along with Durant. I'm actually kind of shocked that Wall didn't make it, given his defense, could have been the perfect starting 2. Do they carry 4 PGs? Curry, Irving, Rose....and Lillard as Rose insurance. It'll be interesting. Davis/Faried and Drummond as the centers?
